How Kazunori Yamauchi Sees Gran Turismo Connecting Games and Real Racing

Kazunori Yamauchi wants Gran Turismo to reflect real cars while making racing more accessible. Here’s what he says games can—and cannot—do for motorsport.

Kazunori Yamauchi sees Gran Turismo as a two-way bridge between games and motorsport: real cars and driving inform the simulation, while virtual racing can give more people a way into car culture and competition. He has described that wider interest as important to motorsport’s future, but the available examples do not prove that playing the game causes people to become real-world racers.

How does Gran Turismo connect to real racing?

For Yamauchi, the connection starts with translating real vehicles into a game. A PlayStation.Blog retrospective on the original Gran Turismo describes the developers using detailed vehicle parameters when manufacturers made them available. Some information was unavailable, however, so the team sometimes had to make educated guesses. The result was an effort to reflect real cars, not a claim that every detail could be reproduced exactly.

That relationship also runs in the other direction. In a February 7, 2020 interview with Motorsport.com, Yamauchi argued that sim racing can help sustain interest in motorsport, particularly when young people face high costs and limited opportunities to try real racing. He described the game as a way to learn driving techniques and car mechanics, and to race strategically online.

His stated ambition was to support racing rather than displace it: “It’s not like we’re working to defeat or exceed the current existing motorsports. This is all a part of the effort to keep it going and make it something that’s everlasting.” Yamauchi also said, “This is something that that we need to do to ensure the survival of motorsports in the future,” adding that the activities around the game were “necessary to keep it going.” These are his arguments for the value of sim racing, not evidence that the game alone can secure motorsport’s future.

Does realism mean making the game difficult?

Yamauchi’s aim to model vehicle behavior does not mean he wants the game to be hard for its own sake. In the PlayStation.Blog retrospective, he recalled that early player testing exposed a problem: people struggled to brake before a tight corner. He chose to make the handling more approachable for regular players.

He explained his reasoning this way: “For myself, driving a real car is not supposed to be hard; it’s often easier than driving inside a simulator,” says Yamauchi. “People are able to naturally know to counter-steer when the car is sliding, so I’ve always had this conviction that if I can get the physics to be very accurate then the driving in the game would not be difficult, because in reality it’s not that hard to drive cars.” The comment describes his design philosophy, not a guarantee that every player will find the simulation easy.

In a Portuguese-language interview published by UOL Carros on December 15, 2024, Yamauchi said work to bring the on-screen experience closer to racing outside the screen matters to both developers and the automotive industry. UOL reports that he pointed to adjustments players can make to traction control, suspension and brake balance. The interview also reports his observation that real race cars can be easier to drive than production cars because drivers must be able to race at very high track speeds. That is his comparison as reported in the interview, not a universal technical rule about every race car.

Can a racing game lead to real motorsport?

Yamauchi expects some players who build skills and interest through Gran Turismo to pursue real motorsport as they grow up. Motorsport.com’s 2020 interview cited Igor Fraga, a Gran Turismo champion whose career continued online during a break from real racing, as an example of the link he had in mind.

One example and an expressed expectation do not establish how often players enter real racing or whether the game caused them to do so. The two environments also have different demands: online competition can involve strategic racing and knowledge of cars, but success in a game does not guarantee real-world driving competence, access to a seat or the resources needed to compete. The cost and practical barriers Yamauchi highlighted remain part of the gap between virtual competition and a real motorsport career.

Why have carmakers partnered with Gran Turismo?

Automaker collaborations provide another link between the game and car culture. Porsche’s newsroom describes the Porsche Vision Gran Turismo as a virtual concept created through a strategic partnership with Polyphony Digital. The company presents gaming as a way to make car experiences interactive and accessible to digital audiences; that is Porsche’s stated rationale, not independent proof of the partnership’s commercial impact.

“We can engage young and digital target groups in the place where their automotive dreams are born: the world of gaming,” said Robert Ader, Porsche AG’s vice president of marketing, in Porsche’s newsroom material. Yamauchi, identified there as president of Polyphony Digital, said: “The appeal of a Porsche comes from its purist design,” and added: “And in terms of engineering expertise, both we and Porsche follow the same perfectionist philosophy. We share the same passion for racing and are looking to the future of the car.”
