Epic says Unreal Engine 5.6 is designed to help developers target smooth 60 Hz performance in high-fidelity, large-scale open worlds on current-generation hardware. Its June 3, 2025 announcement points to improvements in Hardware Ray Tracing for Lumen and reduced CPU bottlenecks, but it does not promise that every UE 5.6 game will run at 60 fps with ray tracing enabled.
What Epic announced about Unreal Engine 5.6
Epic announced that Unreal Engine 5.6 was available on June 3, 2025. The release announcement described a performance-focused goal for large, visually detailed open worlds: “With this release, one of our key goals was to empower you to build super-high-fidelity, large-scale open worlds that run smoothly at 60 Hz on current-generation hardware.” Epic’s UE 5.6 release announcement attributes that target to the company; it is not a published benchmark result.
Epic says Hardware Ray Tracing system enhancements improve performance for Lumen Global Illumination and help eliminate key CPU bottlenecks. The announcement also describes device profiles optimized for 60 Hz on current-generation consoles and desktop platforms. Those profiles give developers tools for targeting performance on supported platforms, rather than guaranteeing a particular frame rate across every project or configuration.
Performance is only one part of UE 5.6. Epic also highlighted engine-first animation and rigging, in-engine MetaHuman authoring, workflow and asset-browser changes, procedural tools, streaming, and cinematic capture.

Does Unreal Engine 5.6 guarantee 60 fps with ray tracing?
No. Epic framed 60 Hz as a development goal for high-fidelity open worlds on current-generation hardware. The announcement does not name a test scene, graphics card, resolution, quality settings, or measured comparison. It therefore cannot establish that all UE 5.6 games—or even a particular game—will sustain 60 fps with Hardware Ray Tracing enabled.
Actual frame rate depends on the game and its scene, the target platform, the rendering configuration, resolution, and graphics settings. A developer may use UE 5.6’s performance work and device profiles to pursue a 60 Hz target, but the result still needs to be achieved and evaluated for that specific game and hardware.

What Lumen Hardware Ray Tracing support depends on
Lumen is Epic’s dynamic global illumination and reflections system. Epic’s documentation explains that Lumen uses Hardware Ray Tracing when the video card, rendering interface, and operating system support it. Hardware support is therefore one condition, not a guarantee of a given frame rate; the project’s workload and settings also matter.
The relevant Lumen documentation and Hardware Ray Tracing documentation are for UE 5.8. They provide general technical context about Lumen and hardware support, not UE 5.6-specific benchmark evidence or a recommended hardware list.

How to interpret the 60 Hz target
For a developer or player assessing a performance claim, distinguish Epic’s target from a measured result. A meaningful 60 fps claim for a specific game would need to identify the platform and hardware, scene, resolution, graphics settings, and whether Hardware Ray Tracing is enabled. Epic’s UE 5.6 announcement supplies no such reproducible test setup or performance percentages.
Epic used similar 60 Hz language in its May 2025 preview announcement. Its warning that preview builds were unstable and not fully quality tested applied to those preview releases, not to the final UE 5.6 release announced in June. Epic’s UE 5.6 preview announcement advised developers to test copies of projects rather than convert working projects during that preview period.
