How Linebacker Injuries Affect NFL Schemes and Run Defense

A linebacker injury can change who communicates, fits gaps, covers or rushes. The effect on run defense depends on the player’s role, replacement, front and opponent.

A linebacker injury can disrupt more than one spot in the lineup: it can affect defensive communication, gap assignments, pressure options and personnel packages. How much it changes run defense depends on the injured player’s role, the replacement’s experience, the defensive line and the opponent’s offense—not simply on the fact that a linebacker is missing.

How do linebacker injuries affect NFL defensive schemes?

Linebackers connect the defensive front to the rest of the defense. Depending on the scheme and player, they may read formations, relay checks, fit run gaps, tackle in the box, cover receivers or rush the passer. When one is unavailable, coaches must decide whether a reserve can take on the same responsibilities or whether to alter the assignments or personnel.

Communication and alignment

An inside linebacker may help identify offensive formations and adjust the defense’s alignment. In a Denver Broncos interview, linebackers coach Peter Hansen described the position’s central vantage point as useful for reading formations and shifting the defense’s configuration. He also said veteran Alex Singleton took over communication when starter Josey Jewell was out. That is a team-specific example, not a rule that every inside linebacker calls every defense.

A replacement may have to learn teammates’ communication habits and the timing of checks as well as the playbook. If alignment or a check is late or misunderstood, a defender can end up responsible for the wrong gap or coverage area. Those are plausible ways an absence can matter; they are not automatic results of every injury.

Gap fits, tackling and the defensive line

Run defense is a coordinated fit, not a linebacker-only task. Defensive linemen must control blocks and maintain leverage so second-level defenders can reach their assigned gaps. If the front occupies blockers, it can shield a replacement linebacker; if blockers reach the second level cleanly, that linebacker may face a difficult tackle or have to take on a block directly.

A reserve who is unfamiliar with a particular assignment, arrives late or misses a tackle can leave a run lane open. But a poor run-defense result cannot be attributed to an injury alone without evidence about the play, the blocking scheme and the other defenders’ execution. Buffalo defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard said in a February 5, 2026 team article, “The number one way to control the tempo of a game is stopping the run.” That describes Buffalo’s stated priority, not a measured effect of linebacker absences.

Pressure and edge responsibilities

In a 3-4 defense, outside linebackers may rush the passer on one play and drop into coverage on another. That flexibility gives a coordinator options for choosing rushers, but it also means losing a specialist can narrow the available combinations. NFL.com’s historical explanation of changing base defenses quotes then-Packers coordinator Dom Capers: “In a 3-4, you know three linemen will be your rushers. That fourth rusher can come from one of the linebackers.” The point is that a linebacker’s absence can affect pressure design as well as run fits, depending on the player’s assignment.

How do teams adjust when a starting linebacker is out?

There is no universal replacement. Teams can keep the usual personnel and play a reserve at linebacker, redistribute responsibilities, or substitute a defensive back and change the package. The best option depends on who is missing and what the opposing offense presents.

Promote a reserve linebacker

A reserve can preserve the team’s usual front and keep a linebacker’s size and run-fit role on the field. The tradeoff is that the backup may have less experience with the starter’s communication duties, coverage assignments or specific matchups. Experience and scheme fit matter more than the depth-chart label alone.

Use nickel or big nickel

Traditional nickel personnel adds a fifth defensive back, commonly replacing a linebacker with a cornerback. That can help match offenses using multiple wide receivers, but it puts a smaller body in the lineup and changes the run-fit responsibilities. Big nickel uses an extra safety who can offer a different mix of coverage and run support. NFL.com’s retrospective on the big-nickel package describes these personnel choices and their intended tradeoffs; it is not a current league-wide measurement of package use.

Change the front or assignments

A coordinator may alter the front, shift who is responsible for a gap, or use different pressure and coverage calls to suit the available players. These changes can help a defense avoid asking a replacement to perform a role that does not fit his strengths, but they require the other defenders to understand their revised responsibilities.

Fronts are tied to personnel and teaching. NFL.com’s historical 4-3-to-3-4 transition explainer notes that changing a base defense is not just a matter of moving players around: it affects the skills and assignments the roster must support. An injury does not necessarily prompt a base-scheme change, but a team’s existing flexibility and personnel shape its options.

What happens when the injured player is the middle linebacker?

The effect can be especially broad if the missing middle or inside linebacker also handles communication and alignment adjustments. A replacement may need to assume both the physical assignment and the organizational work of getting teammates lined up. If the injured player instead has a more specialized coverage or edge role, the biggest adjustment may be elsewhere.

That distinction is why the position label by itself is not enough to predict the impact. A useful comparison asks:

  • What role did the injured player perform? Consider communication, gap fits, coverage, tackling and pass rush.
  • Who is the replacement? Look at experience, skills and familiarity with the scheme.
  • Does the defense keep its usual personnel? A move to nickel or big nickel changes size, coverage options and run responsibilities.
  • Can the defensive line occupy blockers? The front’s ability to protect second-level defenders shapes their opportunities.
  • What is the opponent running? Personnel, formations and blocking concepts affect which linebacker duties are most important.

Why scheme and roster context matter

Buffalo provides a dated, team-specific illustration of how roster and scheme plans influence defensive choices. In its February 5, 2026 article introducing Leonhard, the Bills said he planned to move from a 4-3 base with nickel emphasis toward a 3-4 base, with outside linebackers expected to rush and cover. The same article compared Denver’s 35.9% blitz rate with Buffalo’s 22.9% over the prior two seasons as of publication, ranking the teams fourth and 29th, respectively, in blitz rate for that span. Those are pressure figures, not run-defense or injury-effect statistics, and the plan does not describe every NFL team.

Position demands also evolve. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ linebacker feature discusses the modern position’s combined demands in run defense and coverage in space. That helps explain why a team may value different traits in different linebackers—and why replacing one player with another is not always a like-for-like swap.

Do linebacker injuries hurt run defense?

They can, if the injured player’s responsibilities or the replacement’s execution leave a weakness in the run fit. But the available evidence here does not establish a league-wide yardage penalty for missing a linebacker, or prove that a particular team’s run-defense result was caused by an injury. Run defense depends on the full unit, the opponent’s blocking and the calls made for that matchup.

Two examples illustrate the limits of what can be concluded. NFL.com’s historical report on Brian Urlacher’s season-ending wrist injury discusses Chicago’s challenge in replacing an unusual player and the options available, but does not quantify a resulting run-defense decline. A 2021 peer-reviewed study of NFL pectoralis major injuries recorded 258 such injuries in 245 players across the 1998–1999 through 2019–2020 seasons. Of the 258, 167 were in defensive players; linebackers accounted for 73 of those 167 defensive injuries (43.7%). That is a body-part-specific injury sample, not the share of all linebacker injuries and not a study of team rushing defense.
