Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo record separate game or desktop audio and microphone tracks in Streamlabs Desktop, switch Output Mode to Advanced, enable the recording tracks you need, and assign each audio source to its track. Keep every sound you want viewers to hear assigned to the selected streaming track, then make a short test recording and check it in your editor.
Set up separate recording tracks
- Open Settings > Output. Change Output Mode from Simple to Advanced, then open the Recording tab.
- Choose the audio tracks to include in recordings. Streamlabs documents support for up to six separate recording tracks. The tracks are audio streams within one recording file, not separate video files.
- Choose a recording format that supports multiple audio tracks. Streamlabs’ multi-track guide lists MP4 and MKV; its selective audio-routing guide also lists TS. Because the guides differ about TS, MP4 or MKV is the safer choice across both. Avoid FLV: Streamlabs says its default FLV format does not support multiple audio tracks.
- In the mixer, open Advanced Audio Settings with the settings gear. For each source, select the track or tracks where you want it recorded. For instance, put game or desktop audio on one track and your microphone on another.
- Open Settings > Output > Streaming and select the audio track for your live stream. Streamlabs says streaming uses one audio track. Assign all sources intended for your audience to that track; the recording can include additional tracks for editing.
- Make a brief test recording, then import it into your editing application and confirm that the expected tracks are available and separated. Do this before an important session.
Choose what goes to the stream and what goes to the recording
Track assignments serve different purposes: the selected streaming track determines the audio sent to viewers, while recording track selections determine which source mixes are available in the file for editing. A source assigned only to an additional recording track may not be heard by stream viewers. If you want a source in both places, make sure it is assigned appropriately for both the live mix and recording.
| Goal | What to configure |
|---|---|
| Keep game or desktop audio separate from your microphone while editing | Assign those sources to different recording tracks in Advanced Audio Settings. |
| Send a source to live viewers | Include it on the track selected under Output > Streaming. |
| Record extra isolated audio without changing the audience mix | Assign the source to an additional recording track, and verify that your intended live mix remains on the selected streaming track. |
When you also need to isolate an application
Application Audio Capture is a separate option for capturing audio from a chosen application. Streamlabs advises disabling the general Desktop Audio source when using it; otherwise computer audio can be captured as well, potentially causing duplicate sound or echoes. Selective Recording is another separate control: it determines whether a source goes to the stream, recording, or both. These controls can complement multi-track recording, but they are not required for the basic track setup above.
For more complex routing, Streamlabs’ selective-recording guide describes a VoiceMeeter Banana setup using virtual inputs. That is an optional software-routing approach, not a requirement for separating a microphone and game audio into recording tracks.

Troubleshoot missing or mixed-up tracks
- The recording has only one audio track: Check that Output Mode is Advanced, that the desired recording tracks are enabled under Settings > Output > Recording, and that each source is assigned to its intended track in Advanced Audio Settings.
- The microphone or game audio is missing from the recording: Check the source’s track assignments, then make another short sample and inspect it in your editing application.
- Viewers cannot hear a source that is in the recording: Check whether that source is assigned to the selected track under Settings > Output > Streaming. Recording it on another track alone does not ensure it is included in the live mix.
- The editor does not show separate tracks: Confirm the recording format supports them. FLV does not; MP4 and MKV are named in both Streamlabs guides. Test the chosen format with the editor you plan to use.
- You hear echoes with Application Audio Capture: Check whether general Desktop Audio is also capturing the same computer sound. Streamlabs advises disabling Desktop Audio when using Application Audio Capture.
Streamlabs’ official multi-track guide was originally published September 10, 2019 and last updated April 25, 2025. Its format advice is not identical to the selective-routing guide, so verify a sample in your own editor rather than assuming every format and application combination behaves the same.
