Which payment methods, currencies, legal entities, fees, and payout schedules apply depends on the platform and market.
What happens when you buy a digital game item?
The steps below use Steam’s documented in-game microtransaction flow as a concrete example. Other storefronts and platforms may work differently.

- The game starts checkout. In Steam’s example, the game sends a purchase request to the developer’s purchasing server, which communicates with Steam’s billing service. The server can retrieve country, language, and currency information to help determine pricing. Steamworks Microtransactions Implementation Guide
- The server submits the order. The order includes details such as an order ID, user and app identifiers, language, currency, and item information. If the submitted currency differs from the buyer’s currency, Steam converts the price and presents the converted amount for approval. - The buyer authorizes payment. Steam displays the items and costs in its overlay. The buyer approves or denies the transaction; if the account does not have enough funds, the overlay guides the buyer through funding it. - The platform completes the purchase and the game grants the item. The developer’s purchasing server finalizes an approved transaction. Steam’s guide says a successful finalization means the purchase is accepted and the item should be granted. Steamworks Microtransactions Implementation Guide
- Settlement and reversals are handled afterward. Developers should check Steam’s reporting API for settlement status changes and account for reversals such as refunds and chargebacks. Steamworks describes its setup as “a combination of whatever purchase process you have in-game, the Steam billing web service, and a customer approval process.” That is Steam’s description of its own integration, not a universal blueprint for every game store. Which companies handle payment and delivery?
A platform may combine the storefront, checkout, payment processing, digital delivery, and developer payout, or split those jobs across different entities. In its agreement, Valve says Steam payment processing is performed by Valve Corporation or its wholly owned subsidiary Valve GmbH, depending on the payment method. Valve also says a card issued outside the United States may be processed through a European acquirer by Valve GmbH, while Valve delivers the content. The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City describes a common platform model in which a game platform receives consumer payments and subsequently pays game companies. Its briefing names Adyen and Nuvei as examples of payment processors serving gaming platforms; that establishes their relevance as industry examples, not that either is the right fit for a particular studio. What does “local” change at checkout?
Payment methods and currency
Local processing can mean that a buyer sees familiar payment options, a price in local currency, or checkout rules that vary by region. The Kansas City Fed’s April 9, 2025 briefing said Steam handled transactions through more than 100 payment methods and nearly 40 fiat currencies. Examples it named included cards, digital wallets such as PayPal, buy-now-pay-later services such as Klarna and Zip, and cash-based online payment systems such as Paysafecard and PayPay. Bank-side fees and conversion
A local-currency price does not guarantee that the buyer’s bank will add no costs. Steam Support says banks in some countries may add processing fees, taxes, or conversion charges even when Steam charged in local currency, and Steam does not control those charges. If a purchase-history total differs from the amount on a bank statement, compare the receipt with the statement and ask the bank or payment provider about any additional bank-side charge. Taxes and account funding
Taxes and how an account is funded can also affect the final amount. Valve’s agreement says it may collect applicable use or sales tax and that Steam fees in the EU and UK include VAT. Why authorization is not the same as payout
For a buyer, an approval screen is one step in checkout. For a developer, payment operations continue: the platform may report later status changes, issue or process refunds, or reverse a transaction after a chargeback. Settlement timing and error- or fraud-resolution rules also vary by payment method, according to the Kansas City Fed. Platforms need payment orchestration—the coordination of payment methods and transaction steps—to handle security and periods of heavy demand, such as a game launch or major event. - Market availability: Which countries are served, which local methods are supported, and what buyer or seller eligibility exclusions apply?
- Currency and pricing: Which currencies can be accepted? Does the platform convert prices, what converted total does the buyer see, and can the developer set regional prices directly?
- Buyer steps: Does approval happen in an overlay, through a redirect, after account sign-in, or by funding a platform wallet?
- Transaction operations: How are authorization and finalization handled? How are status updates, refunds, fraud reversals, and chargebacks reported?
- Settlement and payout: When does a transaction become final? Are there holds or reserves? How often are payouts made, and what banking or tax setup is required?
- Total buyer cost: How are storefront taxes handled, and could the buyer’s issuer or bank add fees or conversion charges?
Roblox illustrates why platform rules must be checked individually
Roblox’s Creator Hub gives one platform-specific example: paid access is subject to eligibility and supported-country rules, payouts require a Tipalti account, refund requests are allowed within 48 hours, and local-currency earnings are held for at least 60 days before monthly payout.
