In a study of shoulder-instability events, players missed an average of 26.3 regular-season games; a separate cohort summary reported median absences of 47 days after dislocation and 13 days after subluxation. For recent shoulder surgeries, teams have announced estimates of about four to six months, but those are projections—not guaranteed return dates.
Why shoulder-injury absences vary
“Shoulder injury” can describe different problems, including instability, dislocation, subluxation, and damage that requires labral or rotator-cuff repair. Those diagnoses, along with recurrence, treatment and a player’s progress, affect how long the player is out. Games missed, calendar days and a team’s month-based estimate are different measures and should not be treated as directly interchangeable.
What the NHL evidence says
Shoulder-instability events: an average of 26.3 games
A peer-reviewed study of 67 NHL shoulder-instability events among 57 players from the 2003–04 through 2017–18 seasons found an average of 26.3 regular-season games missed, with a standard deviation of 20.8 games. The study reported that 98.5% of players returned to play. These results describe instability events in that cohort, not every shoulder injury or every operation. Read the study.
Dislocation and subluxation: different median absences
A separate NHL cohort covering 2012–2017 was summarized in a 2024 paper: the median absence was 47 days after dislocation and 13 days after subluxation. These are medians from that cohort, not estimates for every player with either diagnosis. See the 2024 paper.

What recent surgery estimates look like
Team and league reports illustrate the range of individual forecasts. These estimates are tied to the players and circumstances reported; they are not league-wide averages.
| Player and injury | Reported estimate or update | What the update means |
|---|---|---|
| Seth Jarvis, torn labrum and rotator cuff | Carolina projected four to six months in June 2026. | At September training camp, he was skating in a noncontact jersey and said he felt ahead of schedule; that did not confirm game clearance. NHL.com report |
| Maveric Lamoureux, dislocated shoulder repaired with surgery | Utah projected four to six months in September 2026. | This was the team’s recovery projection. Report |
| Connor Bedard, left shoulder surgery | Chicago team physician Michael Terry projected approximately four months in July 2026. | This was a physician’s estimate reported by the NHLPA/Canadian Press. Report |
| Elvis Merzlikins, shoulder surgery | Columbus announced no timetable in August 2026 and said it would reassess after several weeks. | The club had not given a dependable return date. Club update |
| Josh Anderson, posterior labral repair | Columbus projected four to six months in March 2020. | This is a historical individual case, not a current league benchmark. Report |
How treatment and recurrence affect the picture
A survey of NHL team physicians found that surveyed physicians preferred nonoperative treatment for a first-time posterior shoulder-instability event occurring during the season. That finding is specific to the scenario in the survey; it is not a treatment rule for all shoulder injuries. The appropriate approach depends on the instability pattern, recurrence, structural damage, timing and player circumstances. Read the physician survey.

In the 2020 instability study, recurrent injuries were associated with significantly more career games missed among players initially treated nonoperatively than among those initially treated surgically. This is an association in that cohort, not evidence that a particular player should have surgery. See the study findings.

A stated recovery window is an estimate, not a confirmed date for return to games. A player skating in a noncontact jersey, progressing to contact practice, receiving medical clearance and appearing in a game are distinct milestones. Carolina general manager Eric Tulsky described Jarvis’s estimate as a range: “Hopefully on the shorter end of that,” he said. “But that’s the range we were given.” Tulsky also said, “Shoulders are tough. Once it goes, you can keep aggravating it and it can limit what you can do and it’s tough, and eventually it needs to be repaired.” These are his comments in NHL.com reporting, not clinical guidelines. - Alleviates Discomfort & Supports Shoulder Health - Trying to train through shoulder problems isn’t just uncomfortable, it’s risky. The pressure of constant training builds up in the shoulder making it vulnerable to sudden injury. Whether it’s discomfort, instability or a “cracking” feeling in the joint – ignoring shoulder problems is a bad idea. Thousands of athletes use the Anaconda Shoulder brace’s 3D compression to protect their shoulders from injury and reduce discomfort during training.
- Extra Padding for Intense Action - Sudden impact in the heat of a fight can put too much force onto your joint and cause a serious injury. It’s the reason the Anaconda shoulder brace has a detachable gel pad over the shoulder to “absorb shock” from any unexpected knocks. Helping you train confidently without fear of a sudden shoulder injury.
- Adaptable & Stable Design - The Anaconda Shoulder Brace stabilizes the shoulder using 3D compression – it works by molding to your shoulder shape and providing extra support to the joint – but without being bulky and slowing you down like many other braces! That’s the best part about 3D compression… you can worry less about something being injured when you’re training – without feeling restricted!
- How The Anaconda Shoulder Brace Supports Joint Health - 3D compression molds to your shoulder shape applying gentle, consistent pressure to the shoulder area, which helps to stimulate blood flow. This compression improves circulation by allowing more oxygen-rich blood to reach the injured tissues, delivering essential nutrients and removing waste products. Enhanced blood flow supports joint health helping you recover more quickly, move comfortably and train confidently.
- Secure & Flexible Support - The Anaconda Shoulder Brace is designed to stay in place throughout your training session using a dual strap design, giving you the peace of mind that it won’t shift or loosen. The best part is it doesn’t restrict your range of motion because it’s made with 3D knitted compression that flexes with your shoulder’s movement. Size fits both left and right shoulder.
