Most common Minecraft crops take about 31 minutes to reach maturity under ideal conditions, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s crop-farming tutorial. That is an average estimate, not a countdown: crops advance through random ticks, so individual plants can mature sooner or take much longer.
How long do common Minecraft crops take to grow?
Wheat, carrots, potatoes, and beetroot typically take about 31 minutes to mature in ideal conditions—roughly one and a half Minecraft days. The estimate is based on growth probabilities, not a guaranteed timer. The Minecraft Wiki tutorial puts the average time for one growth stage at about 5 minutes in ideal conditions, rising to about 35 minutes in poor conditions. Actual timing varies from plant to plant.
Wheat, carrots, and potatoes each have eight growth stages; beetroot has four. A crop advances when a random tick reaches it, and the intervals between those ticks are unpredictable. Plants placed at the same time therefore do not necessarily finish together. Minecraft Wiki: Crop farming
What conditions affect crop growth?
Light and farmland
Common crops need to be planted on farmland and have a light level of at least 9 at the plant. Hydrated farmland supports faster growth than dry farmland. Alternating rows of different crops—or leaving some farmland empty between crop rows—also improves growth conditions in the tutorial’s model. Minecraft Wiki: Crop farming

Whether the farm is active
Crops need their surrounding chunk to receive the ticks that trigger growth. The tutorial says Bedrock Edition crops need the chunk loaded; in Java Edition, the crop must be within 128 blocks of the nearest player. A farm that is unloaded or outside the relevant activity range should not be expected to keep progressing normally. Minecraft Wiki: Crop farming
Sleeping does not make crops grow faster in single-player or when only one player is nearby. Minecraft Wiki: Crop farming

How can you speed up growth?
- Use bonemeal: It can accelerate a plant’s growth. The crop-farming tutorial says it may advance a random number of stages. Minecraft: Taking Inventory—Wheat · Minecraft Wiki: Crop farming
- Use bee pollination: The tutorial says pollinating bees can advance a crop by one growth stage. Minecraft Wiki: Crop farming
How do you tell when a crop is mature?
Look for the mature appearance rather than relying on elapsed time: wheat turns brown, carrots and beetroot protrude from the ground, and potato plants develop taller leaves. Minecraft Wiki: Crop farming
Pumpkin and melon stems use the same growth-rate algorithm as wheat, carrots, and potatoes, but a mature stem is not the same as a harvest-ready fruit. Pumpkins and melons grow beside the stem, so check for the fruit separately. Minecraft Wiki: Crop farming

Why might your crops be growing slowly?
- Check light: Make sure the plant block has light level 9 or higher.
- Check the soil: Confirm the crop is on farmland; hydrated farmland supports faster growth.
- Check the layout: Mixed rows or empty farmland between rows improve growth conditions in the tutorial’s model.
- Check farm activity: Keep the chunk loaded in Bedrock, or stay within 128 blocks of the farm in Java Edition, as described by the tutorial.
- Allow for randomness: Even under good conditions, plants do not advance on a fixed schedule or mature in sync.
The roughly 31-minute figure is a community-wiki estimate for ideal conditions, not a version-specific guarantee for every current Java or Bedrock release. Minecraft’s official guidance describes crop-growing stages and bonemeal acceleration but does not give an exact maturity time. Minecraft: Taking Inventory—Wheat
