Steam does not publish a standard time for a purchase that is still waiting for bank confirmation. Check the transaction’s status in your Steam purchase history: a pending purchase is not proof that Steam has completed it or collected the money. If Steam says the purchase failed but your bank shows a pending charge, that charge may be a temporary authorization hold, and its release timing is controlled by your bank or card issuer.
What “pending” means on Steam
A purchase that is still processing is waiting for payment confirmation. Steam’s support guidance does not give a typical completion time for this situation. Its limited-account guidance also says a purchase counts only after it has been successfully processed, so a pending transaction should not be treated as a completed purchase.
Check the transaction’s status in Steam purchase history. If it remains unresolved, use Steam Support for transaction help.
If Steam says the purchase failed but your bank shows a charge
A pending charge can be a temporary hold placed by your bank or card issuer; it does not by itself mean Steam collected the money. Steam says it will not collect funds held after certain failed address or CVV checks. The bank releases those funds under the issuer’s policy, and Steam says release may take up to 30 days depending on the bank and its processes. That is a conditional estimate for certain failed purchases, not a normal Steam processing time.

For some declined credit-card transactions, Steam says some banks may take up to 10 business days to return funds they set aside. This estimate applies to the declined-card scenario, and the issuer controls the actual timing. Ask your bank or card issuer whether the pending entry is an authorization hold and when it expects to release it.
What to check if a payment was declined
Steam lists incorrect card information, issuer limits, suspicious-activity flags, and expired cards among possible reasons for a decline. Check the exact error and confirm that the billing address and card details match the information your issuer has on file. If the issuer has placed a hold, contact it about the funds rather than assuming the Steam purchase completed.

Payment-method availability can also depend on account currency or region. Steam’s support page reports a PayPal processing change announced in early July 2025 affecting currencies other than EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD, and USD, with restoration timing uncertain. Because this information is time-sensitive, check Steam’s current payment support information before relying on it for a transaction.
A failed-cart retry window is not a processing estimate
After an eligible purchase failure, Steam allows the saved cart to be retried for exactly 72 hours. This is the period for retrying the cart, not a promise that a pending payment will process within 72 hours.

Refund timing is a separate question
For an approved refund, Steam says it can take up to seven days to appear. Approved refunds to Steam Wallet may take 24–48 hours, and international payment methods may take longer. These timelines concern refunds, not the processing of a new purchase.
