What each time category actually measures
Main story
This is the best baseline if you intend to follow objectives, watch the major narrative sequences and avoid deliberately searching every side path. It is not a speedrun: normal combat, loading screens, deaths and some exploration are still part of an ordinary first play-through.
Main story plus extra content
The middle estimate represents a player who investigates optional rooms, takes detours, finds some resources and completes a meaningful amount of non-critical content without trying to clear every collectible. It is usually the most realistic planning number for a first play-through by someone who enjoys looking around.
Completionist
This category assumes a much more methodical run. Metro 2033 Redux
Metro 2033 Redux is the shortest of the three main games by the cited story estimate. Its campaign is comparatively linear, so a focused run stays close to the critical path. If you are starting the series, this is the least time-intensive entry for learning its stealth, mask-management and resource-conservation systems. A completionist attempt can take more than twice as long as simply following the narrative, particularly if you replay encounters to preserve ammunition or pursue different approaches.
Metro: Last Light Redux
Last Light Redux has a story estimate only slightly longer than Metro 2033 Redux, but its package scope needs special attention. The Redux edition includes all of Last Light’s DLC and advertises an additional 10 hours of bonus single-player content. That means the Redux listing already represents a package broader than the central campaign.
Do not add separate Last Light DLC runtimes to the Redux figures. Doing so counts the same bonus material twice. For a buyer choosing a Redux edition, the table’s package estimate is the relevant one; it is not a base-game-only number.

Exodus is the longest main game by a wide margin in the cited data. The completionist category rises sharply because Exodus combines a substantial campaign with broad spaces and optional objectives. Difficulty settings, stealth choices and retries can move an individual run well above or below any catalog average.
How long is Metro Exodus with The Two Colonels and Sam’s Story?
The two named expansions add different amounts of play. The Two Colonels is a compact, linear chapter designed for a short narrative session. Sam’s Story is the larger expansion, with more opportunity to explore and complete optional activities. Treating both as additions to Exodus gives a story-focused Exodus package of roughly 23.5 hours when the three relevant main-story estimates are combined, while a player using the middle categories has about 33.5 hours to budget. A completionist approach to Exodus plus both expansions is about 53.5 hours.
Those combined figures are arithmetic from the listed entries, not a separate measurement. They assume you count each expansion once and do not include any other Metro release or mode.

The Two Colonels
This expansion is the briefest item in the table. Its linear structure makes the main-story estimate a useful guide for a single evening. Optional exploration changes the total only modestly because the chapter does not have the same broad-area structure as Sam’s Story.

Sam’s Story
Sam’s Story is a fuller expansion and therefore a better choice if you want additional time in Exodus’s systems after the main campaign. Its middle and completionist categories leave more room for detours than The Two Colonels, but it remains much shorter than the base game.

A sensible order
- Play Metro 2033 Redux first to establish the setting, characters and core survival systems.
- Continue with Metro: Last Light Redux. Use its Redux package estimate as the complete Last Light allowance because the DLC is included.
- Play Metro Exodus as the third main game, allowing extra time for its larger areas.
- Finish with The Two Colonels and Sam’s Story if you want the named Exodus side stories after the main campaign. Their placement after Exodus avoids interrupting the main game’s progression and keeps the expansion hours separate in your plan.
Why your actual run may be shorter or longer
Play style
Stealth can reduce firefights but may require waiting, observing patrols and retrying a section after detection. A direct combat approach can move quickly through one encounter while consuming ammunition and creating more resource-management stops later. Neither style is inherently faster across an entire game.

Difficulty and retries
Higher difficulty generally makes mistakes more expensive. Deaths, reloads and attempts to preserve a preferred outcome all add time that a simple story estimate cannot predict. Conversely, an experienced player who knows enemy placements and objectives may finish below the displayed average.
Exploration and collectibles

- Choose your target. Use the main-story column if you want the narrative with minimal detours, the middle column if you routinely investigate optional areas, or the completionist column if you intend to search systematically.
- Reserve buffer time. Add room for deaths, breaks and difficulty spikes rather than scheduling the exact catalog figure as a deadline.
- Separate package scope. Keep Last Light Redux’s included DLC inside its own allowance. Add The Two Colonels and Sam’s Story only when your plan includes those separate Exodus expansions.
- Track chapters, not just hours. Exodus’s larger regions can make a single chapter consume more time than a linear Metro 2033 Redux section, so calendar planning by chapter is more reliable than dividing a total evenly across sessions.
- Decide on cleanup timing. If you want a completionist run, search each area before leaving it. Returning later may be impossible or may require replaying a chapter, which can add more time than collecting items during the first visit.
