Using widely cited player averages, finishing the seven core mainline Grand Theft Auto games takes about 150 hours for the main stories. Chasing substantial extras and completionist objectives raises the combined estimate to about 362.5 hours. Grand Theft Auto 2 has the shortest story average in this comparison, Grand Theft Auto V has the longest story average, and San Andreas requires the most time for a completionist-style run.

These are community estimates rather than guarantees from Rockstar. Your route knowledge, retries, exploration, platform performance and willingness to pursue optional content can move the real total substantially.

What counts as a mainline GTA game here?

This comparison covers the seven core numbered or flagship releases: Grand Theft Auto, Grand Theft Auto 2, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto V.

Portable spin-offs are outside the comparison, as are Grand Theft Auto IV story expansions. The figures therefore describe the principal release in each generation, not every game carrying the GTA name and not every piece of downloadable story content.

Every mainline GTA completion time at a glance

The three columns answer different questions. “Main story” is a campaign-focused playthrough. “Story + extras” includes a meaningful selection of optional activities. “Completionist” is a 100-percent-style attempt involving broad side content and collectibles.

Game Main story Story + extras Completionist
Grand Theft Auto 1 13 hours 13.5 hours 16 hours
Grand Theft Auto 2 12 hours 20 hours 25.5 hours
Grand Theft Auto III 15.5 hours 22 hours 40.5 hours
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City 19 hours 27 hours 43 hours
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas 31 hours 46.5 hours 82 hours
Grand Theft Auto IV 28 hours 41 hours 76.5 hours
Grand Theft Auto V 31.5 hours 48 hours 79 hours

Pro Game Guides published these figures in 2021, compiling individual player submissions and averaging them through HowLongToBeat. A separate comparison describes the figures as widely referenced community averages. Neither source presents an official Rockstar completion-time statistic.

How to use the three estimates

Main-story time

Choose this column if you want to follow the central missions with limited detours. It is the best baseline for a first-pass marathon, but it still assumes ordinary retries and travel rather than a tool-assisted or speedrun route.

Story plus extras

This middle estimate represents the way many players actually play: the story remains the priority, but optional missions, diversions and some collectibles are included. It is a practical target when you want to see more of a game’s world without turning the run into a checklist.

Completionist time

The final column is not simply “the story played slowly.” It reflects a broad attempt at 100-percent-style completion. Collectibles, optional activities, clean-up trips and failed attempts create most of the additional hours, especially in the later games.

  • Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile. Grand Theft Auto returns with Tommy Vercetti’s tale of betrayal and revenge in a neon-soaked tropical town full of excess and brimming with possibilities.
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption. Now, it's the early 90s. CJ’s got to go home - his mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart, and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.

What each game’s spread tells you

Grand Theft Auto 1

The original GTA has the tightest spread in the table. Its extras add only a small amount beyond a story-focused run, and even a completionist attempt remains relatively compact compared with the later 3D entries. That makes it an approachable opening chapter for a chronological marathon if you want to establish the series’ early structure without committing to a long campaign.

The estimate is still an average, not a fixed limit. A player unfamiliar with the game’s missions or controls can spend longer retrying objectives, while someone who knows the routes can move through the campaign quickly.

Grand Theft Auto 2

GTA 2 has the shortest cited main-story average, but its optional-content spread is more noticeable than GTA 1’s. The gap reflects how side activities and exploration can change the shape of a playthrough even when the central campaign is brief.

For planning purposes, treat GTA 2 as a short story game with a much longer optional tail. A story-only run fits easily into a weekend, while attempting broad completion requires setting aside additional sessions for clean-up rather than assuming the campaign total covers everything.

Grand Theft Auto III

GTA III marks a clear expansion in the amount of optional content represented by the estimates. The story average is still modest, but the completionist figure is substantially higher because a full run asks you to pursue activities beyond mission progression.

Rank #3
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition (PS4)
  • Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.

This is often where a marathon changes from “play the plot” to “map out remaining tasks.” If you want to keep momentum, finish the principal missions first and record unfinished optional objectives as a separate list instead of interrupting every story session.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Vice City sits above GTA III in all three categories. Its middle estimate shows that optional content can add a meaningful second layer even when you are not attempting every item. The completionist estimate reinforces that a thorough run is a different commitment from simply reaching the ending.

Players who explore freely or repeatedly revisit side activities should plan around the middle or upper estimate rather than the campaign-only figure. Those who know the mission order and avoid diversions can remain closer to the first column.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

San Andreas is one of the two major time jumps in the series. Its story average is tied with GTA V’s for the broadest campaign scale in this dataset, while its completionist estimate is the highest of all seven games.

The large spread means your definition of “finished” matters more here than in the first two games. A plot-focused player can complete the main arc in a long but manageable campaign; a completionist must budget for many additional activities, collectibles and revisits. If this is the centerpiece of your marathon, schedule it as its own project rather than squeezing it between shorter entries.

Grand Theft Auto IV

GTA IV has a shorter main-story average than San Andreas and GTA V, yet its completionist estimate remains among the highest. That difference is a reminder that campaign length and total-content length are separate measures.

For a balanced run, the story-plus-extras figure is the useful planning point. It recognizes the game’s optional material without assuming that every collectible or side objective will be completed. Players targeting full completion should expect the clean-up phase to take longer than the initial story progression suggests.

Grand Theft Auto V

GTA V has the longest main-story average in this comparison and the second-highest completionist estimate. Its story-plus-extras figure is also the largest in the middle column, so almost any play style beyond a strict campaign run produces a substantial time commitment.

Decide before starting whether you are optimizing for the narrative or for a broad completion percentage. Switching goals halfway through can add unplanned exploration and repeated travel, while a written checklist keeps optional objectives from being attempted twice.

How long would a full GTA marathon take?

Adding the seven main-story averages produces approximately 150 hours. This is the cleanest answer for someone who wants to play each core game through its central campaign. It is a mathematical sum of player averages, not a promised schedule or an official series statistic.

Adding the story-plus-extras column produces approximately 218 hours. A completionist run totals approximately 362.5 hours. The latter figure assumes that each game is pursued to the level represented by its completionist estimate; it does not include portable spin-offs, GTA IV expansions, loading downtime or time spent replaying a game after finishing it.

4 hours per day 37.5 days About 54.5 days About 91 days

Those calendar conversions are simple planning arithmetic. Real schedules stretch when you take breaks, restart difficult missions, change platforms or spend longer exploring than the average player represented in the source data.

Why your result may differ from the averages

  • Game knowledge: Knowing mission routes, unlock conditions and efficient travel reduces hesitation and retries. New players often need more time to learn objectives.
  • Retries: Failed missions, especially late in a campaign, add loading and setup time that averages cannot predict for an individual.
  • Exploration: Free-roam driving, discovering locations and experimenting with activities can turn a story-focused session into an extras-focused session.
  • Collectibles: Searching without a route is slower than using a checklist. Completionist estimates include this kind of additional work, but your search pattern still matters.
  • Platform performance: Frame-rate problems, long loading screens, control differences and hardware-specific issues can affect how quickly you move through a game.
  • Personal definition of finished: Reaching the ending, seeing optional missions and reaching a 100-percent-style target are different goals. Pick the matching column before comparing your time with someone else’s.

A practical order for a seven-game run

  1. Set the target. Choose story-only, story plus extras or completionist play before you begin. This prevents a short campaign from expanding unexpectedly.
  2. Play chronologically if you want to see the series evolve. Start with GTA 1 and GTA 2, then continue through GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, GTA IV and GTA V. Chronology is optional, but it makes changes in scale and structure easier to notice.
  3. Use checkpoints between games. Finish one title before beginning another unless you deliberately want to alternate. Switching constantly makes it harder to track unfinished optional objectives.
  4. Keep a simple progress log. Record the last completed story mission and any side activities you intentionally skipped. This is especially useful in the three later games, where the completionist estimates are much larger than the campaign estimates.
  5. Reserve clean-up sessions. If you are pursuing extras, group collectibles and optional tasks into dedicated sessions rather than interrupting every story mission.
  6. Recalculate after the first game. Your personal pace in the opening title is more useful than a generic calendar assumption. Multiply your observed hours-per-session by the remaining estimate and adjust for the games with larger optional-content spreads.

Starting with the 3D trilogy

Players who prefer to begin with the landmark 3D era can use Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, a compilation containing GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas. The compilation changes how those three games are accessed, but it does not change the underlying player-average estimates in the table. Edition, platform and regional availability can affect the practical experience, so confirm the version you intend to use before planning a shared marathon schedule.

If you choose this route, the three games together require roughly 65.5 hours for their main stories, 95.5 hours with extras and 165.5 hours for completionist-style play, calculated by adding the corresponding entries in the table. Those sums are planning baselines; they do not account for switching games, installation, updates or breaks.

What the numbers can—and cannot—prove

The figures are useful because they put all seven games on the same three-axis scale. They show that the early titles can be completed comparatively quickly, that the 3D-era campaigns generally take longer, and that optional content is responsible for the largest increases in the later releases.

They cannot guarantee an individual finish time. The published methodology averages player submissions, and the source explicitly notes that knowledge of the game and computer or console performance affect playtime. Treat every value as an estimate with a stated scope, not as a Rockstar-certified completion requirement.
