How Long Does It Take to Make an MMORPG?

A realistic MMORPG timeline depends on scope and what counts as finished: vendor estimates range from 18 months for constrained mobile projects to five years or more for broader ambitions.

Plan on several years: the available studio estimates range from about 18 months for a tightly constrained mobile MMORPG to four or more years for a PC game with AAA ambitions. A focused indie project may take three to five years to reach early access. These are vendor estimates, not an independently measured industry average, and the answer depends on what counts as “made”—a prototype, early access, launch-ready game, or commercial release.

How long should you expect an MMORPG to take?

For a staffed project, a useful broad planning range is roughly two to five years, but it is not a universal rule. EJAW estimates two to five years for a feature-complete MMORPG with a persistent world, progression systems, and polished production values. Its narrower estimate is 18–24 months for a constrained mobile MMORPG, versus four or more years for a PC MMORPG with AAA-level ambitions. Those figures come from a game-development vendor, whose page was reviewed in 2026 and does not state a publication date; they are estimates rather than cross-industry measurements. For a focused indie project, Game-Ace estimates three to five years from prototype to early access for a small team building a single-zone, sharded MMORPG. For comparable scope at a mid-budget studio with 20–60 people, it estimates two to three years, citing parallel content creation and a dedicated backend team. These are also vendor estimates, not a guarantee that adding staff will shorten any particular project. Game-Ace’s MMORPG development article

What does “finished” mean?

Timeline comparisons are meaningful only when they end at the same milestone. A prototype can demonstrate a core idea; early access can make a playable, incomplete game available; feature-complete or launch-ready production implies a broader set of systems and content; commercial release is another distinct endpoint. For example, Game-Ace’s indie estimate ends at early access, while EJAW discusses feature-complete production. Neither figure should be read automatically as time to a fully mature live service.

Launch is not the end of MMORPG work. Patches, moderation, live operations, and new content production continue after release. If you are estimating the full service rather than the initial game, define the time period separately from the first launch milestone. EJAW’s MMORPG development overview and Game-Ace’s MMORPG development article describe these ongoing production needs.

Why one MMORPG takes longer than another

World and content scope

A constrained mobile game, a single-zone indie MMO, and a broad PC game with high-end production ambitions are not equivalent projects. More areas, systems, progression paths, and polished assets mean more work to create and integrate. The estimates above reflect different scopes rather than competing answers to one identical brief.

Team and parallel work

Some work can happen at the same time: for example, content authoring may proceed alongside backend development. Game-Ace attributes its shorter mid-budget estimate for comparable scope to parallel content production and a dedicated backend team. That is a proposed production advantage, not proof that a larger team or a particular staffing model will reliably save a set number of years.

Interdependent disciplines

An MMORPG brings together design and writing, art and animation, backend and database engineering, networking, UI/UX, quality assurance, and launch preparation. A feature is not ready merely because one discipline has finished its part: systems, content, and infrastructure must work together and be tested as a whole. Vendor descriptions of MMORPG production identify these as connected parts of the work. EJAW’s MMORPG development overview and Game-Ace’s MMORPG development article

Design changes during development

In a 2022 interview, Virtys game director François Desrosiers described systems in Mist Legacy changing during development and monetization evolving during early access. That illustrates how a project’s design can keep changing as the game is built and tested; it does not establish a standard amount of delay. Desrosiers also advised developers to shape a game around their limitations rather than imitate a larger production. MMOGames interview with François Desrosiers

How to compare timeline estimates

Before treating a quoted number as useful, compare the assumptions behind it:

  • Scope: Is the target mobile or PC, one zone or many, and how broad are its systems and content?
  • Team: How many people are involved, which roles are dedicated, and what work can genuinely happen in parallel?
  • Milestone: Does the estimate end at prototype, early access, feature completion, launch readiness, or commercial release?
  • Service: Does it include only the initial game, or also launch preparation and post-launch operations?

The cited sources do not establish a shared, validated standard for estimating MMORPG schedules. For a real project, ask for a milestone-based plan tied to the specific design and operating plan, rather than comparing year counts without context.

Long projects are possible, but not a genre-wide benchmark

Some projects take substantially longer than the planning ranges above. A retrieved MMORPG.com interview result reported that Saga of Lucimia creative director Tim Anderson was six years into the project; that is a snapshot of one project, not its completed development time or a typical duration. A Square Enix forum repost attributes to Naoki Yoshida the view that a significant MMORPG can take about five years, but the original interview’s date and context were not verified. These examples are best understood as individual perspectives, not industry averages.

Practical planning answer

If you need one initial planning assumption, use several years and specify the target milestone. The closest figures in the available estimates are three to five years for a focused indie MMO from prototype to early access, and two to five years for a broader feature-complete project; a constrained mobile game may be shorter, while AAA-ambition PC production may exceed four years. Treat each as an estimate tied to its stated scope, not a promise for a different game.
