Square Enix does not give a specific average for finishing Dragon Quest XI S’s main story or its post-credits continuation. Its broad playtime claim is that side quests and mini-games offer well over 100 hours of content—not that the main story alone takes that long. The carryover rules Square Enix does spell out concern switching between 2D and 3D modes, not what happens when you continue after the first credits.
How long does Dragon Quest XI S take?
There is no defensible official hour figure in the available sources for reaching the first credits or finishing the story continuation that follows them. Square Enix’s Steam listing describes side quests and mini-games as providing enough content for well over 100 hours. Xbox Wire repeated that broad description in its December 4, 2020 release announcement. Neither source presents it as a measured average for the main story.
It helps to separate three different goals when estimating your own time: reaching the first credits, playing the narrative material that opens afterward, and taking on optional content or completion goals. The official descriptions do not assign separate hour totals to any of those buckets.
Why total playtime can vary
The Definitive Edition adds several ways to spend time beyond the main adventure. The Steam listing highlights character-specific scenarios, the choice of 2D or 3D play, Tickington’s retro-style side-quest area, faster battle speeds, extra Draconian Quest settings, and photo mode. Optional content and play preferences therefore affect a personal run, but the listing does not quantify the time each feature adds.

Is the material after the first credits postgame or a story continuation?
Players commonly describe the events unlocked after the first credits as a continuation of the story, rather than simply optional cleanup after the narrative is over. That is a player-reported description, not a post-credits save-state or carryover rule confirmed in the official FAQ reviewed here. In particular, the FAQ does not specify which items, levels, quests, or other progress are retained when you continue beyond the first ending.
What officially carries over when switching between 2D and 3D?
Square Enix’s official FAQ answers a narrower question: what transfers when changing modes. You can switch between 2D and 3D at a church or campsite, choosing the current chapter or a chapter you have already completed. The FAQ says most information carries between modes unless the story gives a reason otherwise.

Progress through Drustan’s Labyrinth is the stated exception: it does not carry over between modes. These rules apply to changing 2D/3D modes; they should not be treated as confirmation of what carries over after the first credits.

Square Enix’s FAQ says the Switch 2, Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Game Pass, Steam, and Epic versions have the same content, although hardware specifications can result in graphical differences. It also says physical and digital editions contain the same content. For choosing between editions, the documented distinction is therefore hardware and format preference, not different story or optional-content sets.
