To download a GOG cloud-save backup, open the game in your GOG library, select Extras, find Cloud Saves Backup, and click the download arrow. For a local backup, copy the game’s save files to a separate folder or storage device. Restoring a save is game- and platform-specific: confirm the correct save location and filenames before replacing anything.
Download a backup of your GOG cloud saves

Open your game library and select the game whose saves you want to keep.

Open Extras and scroll to Cloud Saves Backup.

Click the download arrow to save the backup to your computer. See GOG Support Center’s cloud-save backup instructions.
This downloads a copy of the cloud saves. It is distinct from copying the save files currently stored on your computer.

Make a separate copy of local saves
Before removing cloud saves or troubleshooting synchronization, locate the game’s actual save directory and copy its save files somewhere separate. GOG advises: “Before removing saves from the cloud, please make a backup of your save files (just in case) by navigating to the game’s save directory and creating a copy of them.” GOG Support Center’s cloud-removal guidance recommends this precaution.
A second copy on a USB or external drive can help keep it separate from the working files; that is an optional storage choice, not a GOG requirement. Check that the copied files are present and identifiable before relying on them.

Where are GOG game saves stored?
There is no universal save-file path established by GOG’s general instructions. Save locations vary by game and can be outside the game’s installation folder. GOG’s documented default $HOME/GOG Games location is an installation directory, not a general save location; installations can also use a different path. See GOG’s explanation of where a game is installed.

Restore a GOG save without overwriting the wrong files
GOG’s general support articles do not define one restore procedure for every game. First identify the correct save folder and filenames for your specific title and platform. Preserve the existing files in a separate backup before replacing them, then follow the game-specific restoration instructions. Do not assume a downloaded cloud-save backup belongs in the game’s installation folder.
GOG’s support article for We Are Not Alone describes using a prior .BAK file and renaming it for the specified Boxer DOS game setup on macOS. That is a narrow example, not a general method for other games or systems; see the title-specific instructions.

Manage cloud saves carefully
If you are removing cloud saves, GOG’s guidance describes disabling cloud saves in the game’s Manage Installation configuration. It also says removal from the cloud may take up to 24 hours in some cases. Keep a separate copy first, and avoid changing files while you are unsure which copy is current. See GOG’s cloud-save removal instructions.
What GOG’s 2024 cloud-save notice said
In a 2024 notice, GOG stated a default allocation of 200 MB per game and said files exceeding it would be removed after 31 August 2024. The notice suggested downloading a backup and reviewing files in Cloud Saves Management; it also said local saves on players’ computers would not be affected by that cloud cleanup. The date has passed, so this is historical information—not an upcoming deadline or proof of the current quota. Read GOG’s notice for its original details.
