Lunge is a spear enchantment that pushes you horizontally forward when you use the spear’s jab attack. It has three levels: Lunge I, II, and III. Higher levels launch you farther and faster, but they also consume more hunger while still costing one durability point per use in the current Java snapshot balance described by the available sources.
Lunge is best used for controlled repositioning, closing a gap before a charge attack, or escaping danger. It does not activate from a charge attack itself, and it does not count as a charge attack for bonus damage.
Lunge levels and movement strength
Each successful jab with a Lunge-enchanted spear applies a horizontal forward impulse. The reported approximate values are:
| Level | Approximate impulse | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Lunge I | 0.458 blocks per tick, or 9.16 blocks per second | Short repositioning and repeated movement |
| Lunge II | 0.916 blocks per tick, or 18.32 blocks per second | Balanced movement and combat approach |
| Lunge III | 1.374 blocks per tick, or 27.48 blocks per second | Rapid gap-closing, charge setup, or escape |
These figures describe the applied impulse rather than a guaranteed distance traveled. Actual movement changes with ground friction, existing momentum, and whether you are airborne. Looking upward or downward also reduces useful forward travel because Lunge is intended to provide horizontal movement.

How to activate Lunge
- Equip a spear enchanted with Lunge.
- Make sure you have at least 6 hunger points. At 5 points or less, Lunge will not activate, matching the hunger threshold that prevents sprinting.
- Use the spear’s quick jab attack.
- Keep your aim approximately level if you want the greatest horizontal movement.
Lunge responds to the jab, not the charge attack. However, you can jab to gain momentum and then begin charging immediately. This lets the movement from Lunge set up a charge attack without treating the Lunge itself as a charge or granting it charge-attack bonus damage.
Current hunger and durability costs
The available current-value guide reports these costs:
| Enchantment | Hunger cost | Durability cost |
|---|---|---|
| Lunge I | 1 hunger point | 1 durability point |
| Lunge II | 2 hunger points | 1 durability point |
| Lunge III | 3 hunger points | 1 durability point |
The hunger figures are applied as exhaustion, so saturation is consumed before the visible hunger bar drops. A well-fed player may therefore use Lunge several times without immediately seeing the food meter change.
These costs changed during Java preview development and should not be confused with older guides. Snapshot 25w43a changed Lunge from a durability-consuming mechanic to hunger and exhaustion, listing costs of 3, 4, and 5 hunger points for Levels I, II, and III and no durability damage. Snapshot 25w44a then reduced those hunger costs to 1, 2, and 3 points and restored a flat one-durability-point cost per use.

Because the official references supplied for the current values are snapshot notes rather than a final-release mechanics reference, the table should be understood as the reported current balance, not as a claim that every release or edition uses identical costs.
How many times can you use Lunge?
With a full hunger bar and maximum saturation, the reported practical estimates are approximately:
- Lunge I: 34 uses
- Lunge II: 17 uses
- Lunge III: 12 uses
These are not fixed limits. Exhaustion from sprinting, jumping, combat, regeneration, and other activities changes how long your food supply lasts. Your spear’s durability and repair options also impose a separate limit.
In Peaceful difficulty, hunger does not deplete, so the practical resource constraint becomes spear durability and the availability of repairs rather than food.

Which Lunge level should you use?
Lunge I: control and efficiency
Lunge I provides the smallest impulse, but it is also the least expensive. Choose it when you want short, repeatable bursts instead of a large launch. It is useful for adjusting position during a fight, moving between nearby targets, or preserving food and spear durability during routine travel.
Lunge II: the general-purpose option
Lunge II is the compromise between distance and control. It gives you substantially more movement than Level I without committing as much hunger as Level III. It is a sensible default when you want Lunge for both exploration and combat and do not need the maximum burst every time.
Lunge III: maximum burst movement
Lunge III is strongest when timing matters more than efficiency. Use it to close a large gap, start a fast approach, or escape an immediate threat. The trade-off is its 3-point hunger cost, while its listed durability cost is still one point—the same flat durability cost reported for Levels I and II.
Higher is therefore not automatically better. Level III can overshoot a target or waste resources when a short Level I burst would have been sufficient.

The best Lunge technique for combat
The most effective reported sequence combines a jump, a level aim, a jab, and an immediate charge:
- Jump before using the spear.
- Aim approximately straight ahead rather than sharply up or down.
- Jab near the top of the jump.
- Immediately begin holding the charge input.
- Reach the target while carrying the forward momentum from Lunge, then perform the charge attack.
The jump helps create a clean movement window, while the level aim preserves horizontal travel. The timing is important: Lunge provides the approach movement, and the later charge is the separate attack that can use charge mechanics.
When Lunge will not activate
Reported failure conditions include:
- You have 5 hunger points or fewer.
- You are mounted or inside a vehicle.
- You are gliding with an elytra.
- You are touching water.
- You attempt to use a charge attack instead of the spear’s jab.
If nothing happens, first check the hunger bar and attack input. Then check whether you are mounted, gliding, or in water. If Lunge activates but the movement seems weak, level your aim and account for friction, momentum, and whether you are on the ground or in the air.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Java and Bedrock availability
Version availability needs care because the supplied references do not independently establish final release boundaries for both editions. One current guide reports Java support from 1.21.11 and Bedrock support from 1.21.130 previews and later, but those version claims are not confirmed by the official sources available here. Check the release notes for the exact version you are playing before relying on those numbers.

Best Value
For Bedrock commands, Microsoft’s command reference lists lunge as a valid enchantment name and documents this syntax:
/enchant <player: target> <enchantmentName: Enchant> [level: int]
For example, with cheats enabled and the required permission:
/enchant @p lunge 3
The Microsoft page is useful for the command format, but its metadata says it was last updated on 2023-10-11. It should not be treated as reliable evidence for when Lunge entered Bedrock or which Bedrock release currently implements every part of the mechanic.
Quick Recap
Practical decision guide
| Situation | Recommended level | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Small position adjustment | Lunge I | Lowest resource cost and easiest control |
| Routine combat approach | Lunge II | Good balance of reach and efficiency |
| Long gap before a charge | Lunge III | Maximum forward impulse |
| Emergency escape | Lunge III | Fastest available burst, provided you have enough hunger |
| Limited food supply | Lunge I or II | Reduces hunger consumption per use |
| Damaged spear | Use sparingly at any level | Every listed use costs one durability point |
