How Magic: The Gathering Creator Richard Garfield Wants to Bring Back the Joy of Card Games

Richard Garfield wants card games to leave room for discovery and reward players’ skill and knowledge. His ideas connect early Magic’s open feeling with the design of Brawlers.

Richard Garfield wants card games to preserve the thrill of discovery: the feeling that players can explore possibilities for themselves rather than simply copy a widely accepted best deck. In an interview with GamesBeat, the creator of Magic: The Gathering connected that open-ended feeling to his preference for games where skill and knowledge—not power carried over from earlier matches—decide who has an advantage.

Why early Magic felt open to Garfield

Garfield’s point is not that every player preferred early Magic, or that today’s game has no room for creativity. It is that uncertainty can make a game feel expansive. When players do not yet know which cards and decks are strongest, they have more reason to experiment and form their own ideas about how to play.

As the game matures, players can find card lists and read what others consider the best decks. That information can help people compete, but Garfield says it can also steer them toward a prescribed route. In the interview, he put it this way: “But when they start playing more seriously. They can look up all the cards. They can see what people believe the best decks are. So it takes away some of the magic. It makes people follow a prescribed path.”

That is a design observation, not a claim that online deck knowledge has erased experimentation. The tension is between optimization, which can make play more informed and competitive, and discovery, which lets players feel that they are finding their own way through a game.

Skill, knowledge and a fair chance

Garfield also distinguishes an advantage earned through play from one accumulated across matches. He says he prefers games where players’ skill and knowledge matter, rather than a structure in which a player who has already built up power enters a later match with a lasting edge. In his words: “And so I really prefer to make it so that your advantage in the game is your own skill and knowledge.”

That preference connects fairness to the shape of competition. In a tournament or a series of separate matches, players can meet on more equal terms; persistent progression can make a losing player feel disadvantaged before a new contest begins. Garfield’s view is a design philosophy, not a universal rule for games: some players enjoy progression, while his stated preference is for competition in which decisions and understanding determine the advantage.

How Brawlers makes folding a strategic choice

Garfield discusses Brawlers as a separate two-player card game. Both players use the same cards, and the game combines bluffing with pressing one’s luck. Its wrestling presentation gives the proceedings an animated theme, but the underlying interaction remains a card game.

One design detail addresses the feeling of losing ground: in the version described in the interview, folding preserves a player’s ongoing power and increases their hand size for the rest of the game. Folding is therefore not simply surrender; it can exchange the immediate contest for a strategic benefit later. That kind of compensation can make a difficult choice more meaningful without turning the game into a contest of power carried over from previous matches.

Garfield emphasized that the game’s shared cards support the bluffing dynamic: “The cards are the same for both players. And so there’s animated proceedings, but you’re playing this card game with this bluffing and pressing your luck mechanic.”

What the projects are—and are not

Magic: The Gathering is the reference point for Garfield’s thoughts about discovery; the interview does not present Brawlers as a new Magic set. It also discusses Chaos Agents, a different project that GamesBeat describes as fully digital. Popularium describes Chaos Agents as an auto-battler/battle-royale hybrid, not a physical card product.

Why playtesting matters to the idea

Keeping a game open to discovery is a design challenge: the designer cannot fully predict how players will combine its parts or what strategies they will uncover. Garfield described that gap between a designer’s view and the public’s experience: “It’s hard to develop a game in a vacuum. And you’re never going to be able to develop it to the level that the public will once they get ahold of it.”

For Garfield, that unpredictability is not merely a problem to eliminate. It is part of what can make a game feel alive—provided the rules leave players room to learn, experiment and make consequential choices of their own.
