Ordinary, full-health zombies and skeletons can generally survive falls shorter than 23.5 blocks. The Minecraft Wiki’s mob-grinder guide lists 23.5 blocks as the minimum lethal fall height for both; builders commonly use a 24-block drop as a practical whole-block target. Equipment, edition, and exact measurement can change the result.
What is the lethal fall height?
The Minecraft Wiki mob-grinder guide groups zombies and skeletons together at a minimum lethal fall height of 23.5 blocks. That means a fall below that threshold is generally survivable for these mobs at full health, while a fall reaching the listed threshold is lethal under the guide’s baseline conditions.
Because 23.5 is not a whole-block build measurement, 24 blocks is the practical target often used to kill common hostile mobs in a grinder. Count the actual fall distance rather than relying only on a rough visual estimate.
Why a 23-block count can mislead
The Minecraft Wiki’s damage guide describes the general fall-damage rule as one health point per block after the first three. It also explains that the game’s fall-distance calculation does not include the final tick before damage is calculated. As a result, a nominal 23-block fall may not deal all 20 health points needed to kill a full-health mob. The guide gives 23.5 blocks as the general minimum lethal distance for a mob with 20 health.

What can change the outcome?
- Feather Falling equipment: Zombies or skeletons may spawn wearing boots with Feather Falling, which reduces fall damage and can require a greater drop for a kill. The mob-grinder guide notes this equipment caveat.
- Zombie armor in Java Edition: Zombies have two natural armor points. This can matter in grinder designs that use fall damage and suffocation to leave a mob at very low health; do not assume zombies and skeletons will behave identically in that setup.
- Drop measurement: The game calculates accumulated fall distance. Miscounting the starting or landing position can make a nominal 24-block shaft shorter or longer in practice.
- Edition and version: Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock damage-command documentation recognizes falling as a damage cause and discusses entity-specific behavior, but it does not give an exact lethal-height table for zombies or skeletons. Treat 23.5 blocks as the cited baseline, and test the precise farm in the version you play if the outcome matters.
Practical takeaway for a mob grinder
For ordinary zombies and skeletons, design around a 24-block fall if the goal is to kill them with fall damage. If you want them to survive, keep the actual fall below the listed 23.5-block lethal threshold. Mobs with damage-reducing gear or a different setup may not follow that baseline.
