There is no fixed number of blocks to dig down from the surface to find diamonds in Minecraft. Surface height varies; use your world’s Y-coordinate instead. In the post-Caves & Cliffs distribution described by Minecraft’s official release notes, diamond ore generates below Y=16, and more generates the lower you go.
Why there is no set number of blocks to dig
Y measures your position in the world vertically; it does not tell you how many blocks you have dug beneath the ground directly above you. Because terrain elevation changes, reaching the same Y-level can take different amounts of digging in different places. Check your coordinates and use a low Y-level as your guide rather than counting down from the surface.
Minecraft’s Caves & Cliffs: Part II release notes state that diamond ore generates below height Y=16, with more ore lower down. That is a distribution trend, not a guarantee that a particular tunnel or coordinate will contain diamonds.
Why you may not see diamonds in a cave
The same official release notes explain that diamond ore has reduced air exposure. In practical terms, some deposits are buried or underwater rather than exposed on open cave walls. Exploring caves can reveal visible ore, but a lack of diamonds on the walls does not mean the area has none.

Is Y=11 still the right level?
Y=11 is old advice, not the current sourced diamond target. Minecraft’s official mining guide describes it as a former broad level for finding ores, then notes that Caves & Cliffs changed ore generation and moved diamonds farther down. The current rule in the release guidance is below Y=16, with more diamond ore at lower levels; it does not identify one universally best exact Y-coordinate.
Choose a mining approach based on what you want to search
Deep branch mining and cave exploration expose you to different parts of the search problem. The official 21w40a snapshot notes say the distribution was adjusted to make deep branch mining more rewarding, including by adding more diamonds that are not exposed to air. Minecraft’s mining guide also discusses Wifies’ mining test, but the cited guidance does not provide a dependable numerical yield to apply to every world.

- BUILD THE DREADED CREEPER – Young explorers, ages 10 and up, build a large poseable version of the iconic Minecraft mob
- MINECRAFT ACTION FIGURE – Kids construct every detail of the Creeper, from its 4 poseable legs to its detachable head
- HIDDEN SURPRISE INSIDE – Builders can remove the Creeper's head to reveal a compartment that hides a first-version Creeper minifigure and TNT element
- POSEABLE ROOM DECOR – After building, kids can put their creation on display in the bedroom or playroom
- GIFT IDEA FOR KIDS – Makes a wonderful birthday or any-time gift idea for boys and girls
- Branch mining: lets you systematically search blocks underground, including deposits not visible from caves. It takes deliberate digging and does not guarantee a find.
- Cave exploration: can expose ore without mining every block, but some diamonds are less likely to be exposed to air, and cave traversal brings its own hazards.
Neither approach has a documented guaranteed yield or universal advantage for every world. The reliable takeaway is to mine below Y=16 and, if seeking better odds within the documented distribution, go lower rather than relying on the old Y=11 rule.

These coordinate recommendations reflect Minecraft’s post-Caves & Cliffs ore distribution as described in the official 2021 release material. The guidance cited here does not establish a version-by-version or edition-by-edition audit of every later update, so treat it as the documented general rule rather than a guarantee for every version. Minecraft’s older 2019 diamond article predates those distribution changes and should not be used to select a current mining level.
