In current Minecraft world generation, diamond ore generates below Y=16 and becomes more common the lower you go. Check your in-game Y-coordinate rather than counting blocks from the surface.
What Y-level should you mine for diamonds?
Minecraft’s official Java Edition 1.18 release guidance says diamond ore generates below height 16, with more ore at lower heights. The world-generation range extends down to Y=-64, but that does not mean diamonds appear at every coordinate between those limits. The official guidance does not name one exact best Y-level.
Minecraft Java Edition 1.18 release notes also explain that diamond ore has reduced air exposure. As a result, ore is more likely to be buried or underwater than exposed on cave walls.
Why counting blocks from the surface does not work
Surface height differs from place to place, and caves and terrain shape the route underground. A fixed number of blocks below the surface therefore cannot identify a universal diamond-finding depth. Track your Y-coordinate and go below Y=16 instead.

Older Minecraft Education lesson material recommended tunneling at Y=12 or Y=13. That advice predates the 1.18 ore-distribution changes, so it should not be treated as the current official recommendation. The newer guidance establishes the below-Y=16 range and increasing frequency at lower levels, but does not specify a single ideal coordinate.

Minecraft’s Education lesson material gives the older Y=12–Y=13 advice. A 2019 Minecraft diamond explainer also says diamonds are below Y-level 16, but predates the 1.18 distribution changes.
