There is no single calorie number that fits everyone. As a broad U.S. reference, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) estimates that adult women generally need about 1,600–2,400 calories a day and adult men about 2,000–3,000. Your age, height, weight, activity, health, and whether you want to lose, maintain, or gain weight can move your personal requirement outside those ranges.
Use the figures below as a starting point, not a prescription. The federal tables are population estimates built around reference bodies, while an individualized target may require a clinician or registered dietitian.

Adult calorie ranges at a glance
NHLBI’s DASH calorie-needs guidance gives these broad daily estimates for adults in the United States:
| Group | Broad daily estimate |
|---|---|
| Adult women | 1,600–2,400 calories |
| Adult men | 2,000–3,000 calories |
These are not targets for every individual in the group. The range covers differences in age and physical activity, and the chart does not know your exact body size, medical history, or weight goal. NHLBI puts the key point plainly: “To figure out your calorie needs, you need to consider your age and physical activity level.”

What the chart shows for ages 19–30
The same NHLBI table breaks out young adults by activity level:
| Age and sex | Sedentary | Moderately active | Active |
|---|---|---|---|
| Women, 19–30 | 1,800 | 2,000–2,200 | 2,400 |
| Men, 19–30 | 2,400–2,600 | 2,600–2,800 | 3,000 |
Each number is calories per day. The table is a population estimate, not a promise that a particular 25-year-old will maintain weight at that intake.

Why your number can be higher or lower
The 2020–2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans identify several inputs that affect calorie needs:
Rank #2
- Digital kitchen scale with food-safe, BPA-free plastic components
- Stainless steel platform with wide LCD screen
- Weighs up to 11 pounds (2 grams minimum, up to about 5000 grams); displays results in pounds, ounces, grams, fluid ounces, and ml
- Tare button for measuring just the food, minus the container weight
- Battery operated; (2) AAA batteries included
- Age: requirements commonly change as people get older.
- Sex: the federal estimates present separate adult ranges for women and men.
- Height and weight: larger bodies generally require more energy than smaller bodies, but the relationship is individual.
- Physical activity: movement raises energy expenditure compared with a sedentary routine.
- Weight goal: trying to lose, maintain, or gain weight changes how an intake estimate should be interpreted.
- Health conditions: medical issues, medications, recovery, and other circumstances can alter needs.
The Dietary Guidelines’ adult estimates use reference heights and weights. Because your body may differ from those references, a chart can orient you without accurately predicting your maintenance intake. MedlinePlus also notes that medical conditions and weight goals matter and recommends discussing individual needs with a healthcare professional.
How activity level is defined
NHLBI’s categories are broader than simply “I exercise” or “I do not exercise.” Understanding the definitions helps you choose the closest row.
Sedentary
This category represents only the light physical activity associated with ordinary daily living. A day spent mostly sitting for work, school, travel, or gaming generally fits here unless you add substantial intentional movement.
Moderately active
NHLBI describes moderate activity as walking approximately 1.5–3 miles per day at about 3–4 miles per hour, in addition to the light activity of daily life. Other exercise that creates a similar overall workload can place someone in this category.

Active
The active definition is more than 3 miles of walking per day at roughly 3–4 miles per hour, on top of light daily activity. Regular training, a physically demanding job, or extensive walking may contribute to this level.
Gaming time itself does not determine your calorie requirement. A person who plays for several hours but also walks or trains daily may have a different estimate from someone with the same gaming schedule and little other movement.
A practical way to use a calorie chart
- Start with the broad range. Use the adult woman or adult man range as an orientation rather than choosing the highest or lowest number automatically.
- Locate your age band. Age-specific rows, such as NHLBI’s 19–30 table, are more informative than a single adult average.
- Match your activity honestly. Compare your typical week with the sedentary, moderately active, and active definitions. Do not label occasional exercise as an active lifestyle if most days are inactive.
- Account for body size. Height and weight are included in the Dietary Guidelines’ list of factors, so a reference-body estimate may need adjustment for you.
- State your goal. The same intake can maintain one person’s weight, increase another person’s weight, or be insufficient for a third. Decide whether your aim is to maintain, lose, or gain before treating a number as useful.
- Observe your response over time. Trends in weight, energy, hunger, training performance, and health are more informative than a single day. If the result conflicts with medical advice or you feel unwell, stop self-adjusting and seek professional guidance.
This process narrows a population estimate; it does not turn the chart into a measured metabolic test.

Calories for losing, maintaining, or gaining weight
Calorie needs are not independent of your goal. Maintenance means supplying roughly the energy your body uses over time. Losing or gaining weight requires a different energy balance, but the appropriate change depends on your starting intake, health, activity, and rate of change.

General charts do not establish a safe deficit or surplus for every person. Avoid treating the bottom of a published range as an automatic weight-loss prescription or the top as a guaranteed bulking target. A clinician or registered dietitian can help set a goal that accounts for medical history, medications, eating-disorder risk, pregnancy, and athletic demands.

Pregnancy changes energy needs by stage, and the federal figures are expressed as additions to prepregnancy needs for people who began pregnancy at a healthy weight. The 2020–2025 Dietary Guidelines give these estimated changes:
| Pregnancy stage | Estimated change from prepregnancy needs |
|---|---|
| First trimester | +0 calories per day |
| Second trimester | +340 calories per day |
| Third trimester | +452 calories per day |
These are dated, population-level estimates, not individualized instructions. Prepregnancy weight, activity, fetal growth, illness, and other factors can change the recommendation. The same appendix includes lactation estimates and cautions that prepregnancy weight and personal circumstances matter, so a breastfeeding parent should obtain a tailored plan rather than apply a generic pregnancy number.

When a general chart is not enough
MedlinePlus advises people with health conditions or special circumstances to involve a healthcare provider in determining calorie needs. Examples include diabetes, thyroid disease, kidney or gastrointestinal disorders, cancer treatment, significant unintended weight change, and recovery from surgery or illness. Medication effects, mobility limitations, and a history of disordered eating can also make a generic target inappropriate.
A registered dietitian can translate a clinical recommendation into meals, portions, and a schedule that fit your preferences. If you are under 18, use pediatric guidance rather than the adult ranges in this article.
Calories on food labels versus calories you need
Food labels report calories for a stated serving size. MedlinePlus explains that serving sizes are based on average amounts people typically eat, while individual calorie requirements can be higher or lower. A label therefore tells you the energy in that portion; it does not tell you how many calories you personally should consume in a day.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using 2,000 calories as a universal rule. That figure is a labeling reference used in some contexts, not a personal prescription.
- Ignoring age and activity. Two people of the same sex can have very different needs because their movement and age differ.
- Assuming a calculator is exact. Any estimate built from reference bodies has uncertainty.
- Confusing a serving with a daily allowance. A serving-size calorie number describes one portion only.
- Making large changes after one weigh-in. Hydration, food volume, and normal day-to-day variation can obscure longer-term trends.
- Applying pregnancy numbers to everyone. The trimester additions are for a defined population and require clinical context.
- Using exercise to justify unlimited intake. Activity estimates are themselves approximate, and calorie burn varies by person and task.
How current are the federal tables?
The pregnancy figures and adult assumptions cited above come from the 2020–2025 edition of the Dietary Guidelines. The official Dietary Guidelines website identifies a newer edition, but the current calorie tables are not reproduced here. Check the latest federal edition before treating any 2020–2025 value as the newest national estimate.
Regardless of edition, the central limitation remains: national tables describe groups. Your healthcare team can account for your measured body, health status, activity, and goal.
Bottom line for a typical adult
Use 1,600–2,400 calories per day for adult women and 2,000–3,000 for adult men as broad U.S. reference ranges, then refine the estimate using age, activity, height, weight, health, and your goal. The 19–30 NHLBI rows show how much activity alone can shift the estimate. Treat every chart number as a starting point, and seek individualized advice for pregnancy, lactation, medical conditions, or major weight changes.
