There is no required creature count in Commander. The format requires exactly 100 cards, including your commander; how many of the other cards should be creatures depends on what your deck is trying to do and what jobs those creatures perform.
What do the Commander rules require?
The official Commander deck-construction rules require a 100-card deck including its commander, alongside color-identity and singleton restrictions. They do not set a minimum, maximum, or recommended creature count. There is no official universal number to target.
Let the deck’s plan set its creature count
Start with how the deck expects to win, then decide which card types best support that plan. Creature count is a consequence of the strategy, not a quota to fill.
| Deck approach | How creatures may fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Combat, tribal, or board-focused | Creatures can provide the attackers, blockers, and themed synergies that make the plan work. Creature-producing effects may also help build a board. | Does the deck reliably develop the board it needs, while retaining enough ramp, card advantage, and interaction? |
| Creature-synergy commander | Creatures may trigger the commander, supply repeatable value, or become resources the deck can recur. | Do the creatures meaningfully advance the commander’s ability, or are some included just to raise the count? |
| Spell-focused strategy | Instants, sorceries, or other noncreature cards may be central to the plan, so creatures can take fewer slots. | Are the remaining creatures and other cards still enough to defend you and support the deck’s win condition? |
These are strategic comparisons, not published creature-count ranges. Wizards of the Coast designer Ethan Fleischer described the Warhammer 40,000 Commander decks as intentionally “heavily creature based” because armies and units were central to the theme. That is an example of a theme shaping a deck’s composition, not a recommendation for every Commander list. (Designing the Warhammer 40,000 Commander Decks, September 19, 2022.)

Count what each creature does, not just its card type
A creature can fill more than one role: it might be a threat, an engine that generates value, or an answer to an opposing permanent. Wizards’ beginner guidance discusses threats and answers as separate deckbuilding jobs and recognizes that creatures can provide removal. A lower creature count can still include several useful answers; a higher count can still leave a deck short on interaction if its creatures do not address the problems it faces. See An Introduction to Commander for that broader role-based approach.
For each creature slot, ask whether the card advances your commander’s plan, supplies a needed threat or answer, or provides an engine or synergy the deck needs. If it does none of those jobs especially well, consider whether a noncreature card would use that slot more effectively.

A practical way to choose and tune the number
- Write down the win plan. Be specific about whether you expect to win through combat, a creature-based synergy, or a spell-centered plan.
- Sort nonland cards by job. Group them into threats, answers, engines, ramp, and card advantage. A card may serve more than one role.
- Check for missing functions. Make sure the list has enough support for its plan as well as the interaction and resources it needs to operate. Do not add creatures simply to reach an assumed standard.
- Test and review. After playing the deck, notice whether you often lack a board when you need one, draw creatures that do not help, or find that adding creatures has crowded out essential support. Adjust the list around those specific problems.
This is a deck-review method, not an official formula. The right count is the one that lets your particular list execute its plan without leaving essential jobs uncovered.

How to think about the number
- The official deck size is 100 cards including the commander; the rules do not prescribe a creature count. (Commander Rules)
- Creature-forward plans may call for more creatures or creature-producing effects; spell-centered plans may need fewer.
- Judge each card by its role and contribution, not by type alone. A creature may also provide removal, card value, or synergy.
- No primary source cited here establishes an average or universal recommended range, so treat any precise target as a personal starting point rather than a format rule.
