How Many Electricity Units Does an OBS YouTube Stream Use per Month in India?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no fixed monthly electricity-unit total for streaming to YouTube with OBS. It depends on the streaming computer’s average power draw at the wall and how many hours it runs. Estimate it with: units (kWh) = average watts × streaming hours per day × days ÷ 1,000. At an illustrative 120 W for 24 hours a day over 30 days, the computer would use 86.4 units. That 120 W figure is an example, not a universal OBS benchmark or a measurement of your setup.

Calculate monthly electricity units

One electricity unit is one kilowatt-hour (kWh). Convert watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1,000, then multiply by the number of hours the equipment runs.

Example use Calculation Estimated computer use
24 hours a day for 30 days at an illustrative 120 W 120 × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 86.4 units (kWh)
4 hours a day for 30 days at the same illustrative 120 W 120 × 4 × 30 ÷ 1,000 14.4 units (kWh)

The 120 W desktop example is published by StreamNeo for continuous streaming; it is not a measured average for OBS users. The 86.4- and 14.4-unit figures are arithmetic based on that example, not separate measured statistics. CPU-based x264 encoding may increase a computer’s draw, while a gaming PC using NVENC may draw less in some circumstances; your actual wall-power measurement is more useful than a general estimate.

What counts in the estimate?

OBS is software, not a fixed-wattage appliance. Electricity is used by the computer or standalone hardware encoder running the stream, plus any other powered production equipment you choose to include. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes computer and standalone encoder setups and connected equipment such as microphones and webcams. Measure or estimate those devices separately if you want the total for the whole setup, rather than just the computer.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How to measure your streaming setup

  1. Count the actual streaming hours. Use the hours per day and number of days in your electricity billing period, rather than assuming a full month of continuous streaming.
  2. Measure power at the wall while streaming. A plug-in energy meter that records cumulative kWh can help if the computer and meter are electrically compatible and the meter is rated for the load. No particular meter model is specified or tested here. A power supply’s maximum rating is not the computer’s usual draw; for variable workloads, use a representative average during a normal stream.
  3. Calculate units. Multiply average watts by streaming hours, then divide by 1,000. For a month with varying daily use, add the streaming hours across the billing period and multiply by the representative average watts.
  4. Add other equipment only if needed. Measure or estimate each additional powered device separately, then add its kWh to the computer’s total.

Estimate the rupee cost using your own tariff

A basic approximation is added units × applicable per-unit energy charge. India does not have one domestic electricity rate that can safely be applied to every household: State Electricity Regulatory Commissions determine retail tariffs, and subsidies may vary by state and consumer class. The Ministry of Power stated on 25 July 2024 that “As per the provisions of the Electricity Act, 2003, the State Electricity Regulatory Commission determines the tariff for retail sale of electricity to end consumers.” See the Ministry of Power release, the CEA’s March 2024 tariff-and-duty reference, and Puducherry’s tariff-order index.

For a rough estimate, use the energy charge and billing conditions that apply to your household. Your bill can also include tariff slabs, subsidies, duties, adjustments and fixed charges, so multiplying units by a single rate will not necessarily predict the final bill.
