That is the latest specific post-layoff total located—not a verified live count for October 2026. Epic’s own announcement confirmed it was laying off more than 1,000 people but did not state its resulting headcount.
What is Epic Games’ latest reported employee count?
The latest specific figure is 4,000 employees after the March 2026 layoffs. The Associated Press reported that number on March 24, citing Epic. Epic’s announcement confirmed that it was cutting more than 1,000 jobs, but did not give a post-layoff total.
Because the 4,000 figure is tied to the layoffs in March, it should not be treated as an exact count of Epic’s employees on October 8, 2026. No precise live total for that date is established here.
Why did Epic Games lay off employees in 2026?
In its March 24, 2026 announcement, CEO Tim Sweeney said Fortnite engagement had declined beginning in 2025, leaving Epic spending significantly more than it was earning. The company said it was laying off more than 1,000 employees and had identified over $500 million in savings through cuts to contracting and marketing, as well as by closing some open roles. Epic also pointed to broader industry pressures, including slower growth, weaker spending and competition for players’ time.

How does the 2026 reduction compare with Epic’s 2023 layoffs?
Epic announced two distinct workforce changes in September 2023. Its September 28 statement said around 830 employees—16% of jobs—would be laid off. The company linked the cuts to spending that exceeded earnings as it invested in Fortnite’s creator ecosystem, which involved significant revenue sharing and lower margins than its earlier Battle Royale-driven growth.
Separately, Epic said around 250 people were leaving through the divestitures of Bandcamp and SuperAwesome. Those departures were not part of the announced 830 layoffs, so the figures should not be combined as though they described one layoff total.

Why isn’t there an exact current headcount?
A layoff announcement gives the number of positions being cut, not necessarily the company’s total workforce afterward. Epic’s March 2026 announcement did not state a resulting headcount; the 4,000 figure is the post-layoff total reported by AP. Nor can a later count be reliably calculated by subtracting announced layoffs from an older workforce figure: hiring and other departures in the intervening period would also affect headcount.
