In ordinary Skyrim play, one typical companion can follow you at a time. You may also have an animal follower, and quest missions can bring additional NPCs along—but those mission followers do not work like fully managed companions.
How many regular companions can follow you?
Bethesda Support says that only one companion can follow you around at a time. That is the practical limit for the ordinary companion system: you cannot normally have several fully functioning companions travelling with you as a party.
Can you have an animal follower too?
Prima Games describes the usual arrangement as one human follower alongside one animal follower. This is a general guide to the typical setup, not a guarantee that every creature or pet behaves identically. Prima Games’ Skyrim pet guide covers the animal-follower side of that distinction.
Why might more than one NPC follow you?
Some missions bring quest-related NPCs or future companions along. Bethesda says these additional followers may assist in combat, but they do not function like typical companions: they do not offer dialogue beyond what the mission requires and cannot store items. Their presence does not mean you have recruited multiple ordinary companions.

Is there one maximum for every follower type?
No universal total is established for every combination of animals, quest followers, summons, mods, exploits, and unusual quest states. The reliable rule is one typical companion at a time; the one-human-plus-one-animal setup is a general description of ordinary play, while mission NPCs are a separate case. A precise count covering every exception would depend on the specific situation and is not established by these sources.
