The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has one main ending sequence, with an extra post-credits scene if you complete the Captured Memories quest. Players often call the expanded version the “true ending,” but it adds a scene rather than replacing the game’s main conclusion.
What changes between the two ending presentations?
You can reach the standard ending without finding every memory. Completing Captured Memories unlocks an additional scene after the credits; the earlier ending sequence remains the same. The game does not present these as separate branching conclusions, so “two endings” is best understood as two presentations of one main conclusion.
| Presentation | What you need | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Complete the game; all memories are not required. | The ending sequence and its post-credits scene. |
| Expanded, often called the “true ending” | Find all 13 Captured Memories, then complete the game. | The standard sequence, followed by an additional scene after the credits. |
The specific scene conditions are described in a GameFAQs answer about seeing every ending scene and the Zelda8 memory guide. Nintendo’s game features page describes Link’s lost memories as part of the story, but does not specify this ending trigger.
How to unlock the extra post-credits scene
- Find the 12 photo memories. Use the photos in the Sheikah Slate album to locate the memories in Captured Memories.
- Return to Impa in Kakariko Village. Once you have the 12 photo memories, she reveals the clue to a 13th memory.
- Find the 13th memory. This completes the memory collection needed for the extra scene.
- Complete the game and let the credits play. The additional scene comes after the credits, following the standard post-credits scene. Skipping the credits can mean missing it.
The 12-photo sequence and Impa’s clue to the final memory are outlined in the Zelda8 Complete Memory Collection Guide. The post-credits order and the fact that the initial scene does not require Captured Memories are described in the GameFAQs Q&A.

Do you need the extra scene to finish the story?
No. The standard ending is available without all 13 memories. The memory quest adds context after the credits, but it is not a prerequisite for completing the game. If you want to see every ending scene, finish Captured Memories before the final battle and watch through the credits.

Nintendo’s pages establish the game’s premise and its focus on Link recovering his memories, but they do not publish an official count of endings or explain the final scene’s unlock condition. The distinction between standard and expanded presentations comes from gameplay guidance, rather than an official Nintendo description. For broader game information, Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch listing identifies the game and describes its free downloadable Explorer’s Guide.
