One water block can hydrate up to 80 farmland blocks in Minecraft when they are arranged in a 9×9 square around it. The farmland must be within four blocks horizontally of the water, diagonals included, and at the same height or one block below it.
How the 9×9 hydration area works
Count four blocks outward from the water in each horizontal direction. That creates a 9×9 footprint: 81 positions in total. With water in the center, the other 80 positions can be farmland within the stated range. The four corners count, because the range includes diagonal positions.
For example, place water in the middle of a flat 9×9 plot and farmland around it. Each corner is four blocks away along both horizontal axes, so it is within the footprint described by the Minecraft Wiki and TheMinecraftWiki.com’s farmland reference and crop-farming tutorial.
Water placement and other hydration
- Horizontal distance: Farmland can be up to four blocks from the water; diagonals count.
- Height: Water must be level with the farmland or one block above it.
- Water state: Still and flowing water both work when the placement conditions are met.
- Rain: Rain can also hydrate farmland, so a placed water block is not the only possible source.
Applying the rule to a farm
The 80-block figure is the maximum farmland count for the centered 9×9 footprint with water occupying its middle. A path, access gap, or different layout reduces the number of farmland positions in that footprint; the sources do not establish performance comparisons among farm designs. Keep each farmland block within the four-block horizontal range and observe the height condition.
