Eating another dish from a category replaces the dish already active in that category, even if the new effect is weaker. Foods that affect Sheer Cold are listed as a separate, special group, so they can make five distinct groups when included in the count.
How food-buff slots work
The game groups ordinary food buffs by what they affect, not by the number of dishes you eat. You can have an active effect from each of the four categories, but you cannot combine two buffs within the same category. The Genshin Impact Wiki’s food reference describes the latest food consumed in a category as replacing the previous one.
For example, eating one dish that boosts ATK and then another that boosts CRIT does not leave both offensive effects active. The second offensive dish takes the category’s slot. The same replacement rule applies if the new dish is weaker than the one it replaces.
The four standard food-buff categories
| Category | Effects included | What happens when you eat another dish in this category? |
|---|---|---|
| Offensive | ATK, CRIT, and physical-damage boosts | The new offensive buff replaces the active one. |
| Defensive | Shield strength, DEF, HP, and healing-bonus boosts | The new defensive buff replaces the active one. |
| Stamina | Reductions to stamina use for activities such as climbing, gliding, or sprinting | The new stamina buff replaces the active one. |
| Elemental | Elemental damage bonuses and elemental resistance effects | The new elemental effect replaces the active one. |
These categories are broad: two dishes do not need to have identical wording to compete for the same category. An ATK dish and a CRIT dish both use the offensive category; choose the one whose effect you want active rather than expecting their buffs to add together.

Does the Sheer Cold effect count as a fifth buff?
For the ordinary food-buff count, the answer is four. The food reference separately identifies foods that affect Sheer Cold accumulation as another group. If you are counting that special environmental effect as well, there are five distinct groups: the four standard categories plus Sheer Cold-related food.
What about healing, stamina recovery, and revival food?
Recovery and revival foods are consumables, but they are not additional ordinary stat-buff categories. A stamina-refill item restores stamina rather than adding a stamina-use reduction buff. The HoYoLAB guide by creator dhairya reports a 300-second cooldown for stamina-refill foods and a 120-second cooldown for revival foods; these are reference-reported mechanics, not a claim of a current hands-on test. It also says that healing from multiple continuous-healing foods does not stack. See the HoYoLAB guide on food.

Do potions get a separate elemental slot?
Do not assume that an elemental potion creates an extra ordinary slot. The food reference groups elemental boosts and reductions together and says they cannot coexist with another elemental effect. The available references do not establish every potion interaction across all current patches or game modes, so check the effect in-game if you need a specific combination.

- Pick one offensive dish. Decide whether its ATK, CRIT, or physical-damage effect best suits the character or encounter.
- Add one defensive dish if needed. Choose the defensive effect you want; a second defensive dish will replace it, not supplement it.
- Use a stamina dish for travel or movement-heavy play. It occupies the stamina category, separate from offensive and defensive effects.
- Add an elemental dish when useful. Elemental damage or resistance uses the elemental category, so another elemental effect competes with it.
- Treat Sheer Cold food as its own special case. It is listed separately from the four standard categories.
For a quick check, ask whether two foods affect the same category. If they do, expect the later one to replace the earlier buff; if they belong to different standard categories, they can be active together.
