The route begins in Euclid and, after Iousongola at galaxy 255, loops back to Euclid. Some references give 256 because they count Odyalutai as a separate, 256th named galaxy.
Why do some sources say 255 and others 256?
The difference comes from what is being counted. For ordinary galaxy-to-galaxy progression, the answer is 255: Euclid is galaxy 1 and Iousongola is galaxy 255. No Man’s Sky Resources describes that sequence as looping back to Euclid, and identifies its guide as accurate for version 6.4 Swarm (No Man’s Sky Resources).

The Galaxy reference lists 256 unique galaxies and separately names Odyalutai as galaxy 256. That accounts for the larger figure, but the sources do not consistently describe Odyalutai as part of the normal progression route. So 256 is best understood as a count that includes this additional named/data entry—not as the endpoint of the ordinary loop (Galaxy reference, current as of 26 May 2026).

How does the normal galaxy route work?
Players start in Euclid, galaxy 1. The current version 6.4 Swarm guide says players can reach other galaxies by going to a Galaxy Centre or by completing the primary mission “The Purge.” In the guide’s sequence, Iousongola is galaxy 255; leaving it returns the player to Euclid rather than continuing to a 256th stop in the ordinary loop (No Man’s Sky Resources).

Does the Galaxy Map show the total?
The Galaxy Map is used to navigate, but its display is not the source of the 255-versus-256 distinction. Hello Games’ Beyond update notes say the map received clearer information, icons, text, and navigation; they do not state a total galaxy count (Hello Games’ Beyond patch notes). Exact map labels and navigation wording may vary by game version and platform.
