Steam has no single fixed size. The Steam client’s footprint varies by platform and installation, while the games and related files in your library are usually what take up most of your storage. Valve lists 5 GB of available storage in its Steam for Linux documentation; that is an installation allowance, not a claim that the client itself occupies exactly 5 GB.
To see where your space is going, open Steam > Settings > Storage. For planning, count the client, installed games, update space, and supporting files separately.
What does “Steam size” mean?
The answer depends on which part of Steam you mean. The desktop client is only one part of a Steam installation; game files and supporting data can be stored alongside it or in separate library folders.
- Steam client: The application and its supporting files. Its installed footprint changes with the operating system, client updates, caches, logs, and local data.
- Available-space requirement: Valve’s Linux documentation lists 5 GB of available storage. This is a requirement or planning allowance for that Linux documentation, not a measured, universal client size.
- Steam library: Installed games and associated content. Libraries can be placed on more than one drive, so the main Steam folder alone may not show total usage.
Steamworks runtimes, shader caches, Workshop downloads, Proton compatibility data, screenshots, recordings, and local saves can also consume space. Steam Cloud is a synchronization feature, not a guarantee that every local file is backed up or safe to delete.

How much space should you reserve to install Steam?
Where Valve lists it, use 5 GB of free space as a conservative installation allowance—not as Steam’s exact installed size. The cited figure comes from Valve’s Steam for Linux documentation; it is not a universal requirement stated for every platform.
That allowance does not include the games you plan to install. A game’s store-page storage requirement is a useful starting point, but installation or updating may need extra temporary room: Steam may download compressed data, unpack files, replace existing files, or verify an installation. Optional texture packs, DLC, language packs, and mods can add more. Small games may be under 1 GB, while large games can take tens or well over 100 GB; there is no authoritative universal average for Steam games.
How to check Steam’s actual storage use
Use Steam’s Storage page
- Open Steam and choose Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Select a drive or library to review its installed games and reported usage.
- Use the + control to add a library location when available.
- Select a game and choose Move to relocate it to another configured library.
Labels and layout can differ by operating system, Steam client version, or Steam Deck build. If the exact wording differs, look for Storage, Installed Files, or Move Install Folder. Valve’s library and installation guidance covers multiple drives and moving games.

Windows
- For a complete folder measurement, exit Steam first.
- In File Explorer, locate the Steam installation. A common default is
C:Program Files (x86)Steam, but users can choose a different location. - Right-click the folder and select Properties. Compare Size with Size on disk.
- Measure
steamappsseparately to distinguish game and library data from the client. Within it,commonholds installed game folders;downloadingmay contain incomplete or temporary downloads;workshopholds Workshop content.userdatacan contain account- and game-related local data.
Valve identifies the common Windows library location as C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon, while noting that another library location may have been selected. Other folders can hold caches, runtimes, settings, or user data; do not delete them just because they look large.

macOS
- Quit Steam.
- In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder.
- Enter
~/Library/Application Support/Steam, then select the folder and choose Get Info. - Measure the Steam application separately from this support-data folder if you want to distinguish the client from its associated data.
The user Library folder may be hidden in Finder. Valve’s Mac removal and reinstall guidance warns that SteamApps can contain downloaded games and local save data.
Linux
Paths depend on the distribution, packaging method, and library locations you chose; there is no single path that applies to every Linux installation. Use the file manager or a disk-usage tool to inspect the Steam installation, game libraries, and compatibility data separately. Check each configured library rather than assuming all game files are under the client’s main folder.

Why Steam can use more space than expected
Games and optional content
The game library usually accounts for far more storage than the launcher. DLC, optional high-resolution textures, language packs, and mods can change a game’s final footprint. Check the individual game’s storage details rather than estimating from the client’s size.
Downloads and updates
A download’s size and the installed game’s size can differ because downloaded files may be compressed and then unpacked. Updates can also need temporary space to stage or replace files, so an update may fail even when the displayed patch download looks small.
Workshop files, shaders, and local data
Workshop items can accumulate separately from a game’s base files. Shader caches, screenshots, recordings, configurations, and local saves also add data. On Linux and Steam Deck, Proton may create compatibility data for Windows games in addition to the game’s principal files. Valve describes Proton as the compatibility layer for running Windows games on SteamOS-based hardware; compatibility and storage needs vary by game.

More than one library or user account
A Steam library can be on another internal drive, a removable drive, or a microSD card on Steam Deck. A shared computer may also have data under more than one user account. Check all libraries and relevant accounts before concluding that a measurement of the main Steam folder is the total.
How much storage should you plan for gaming?
Choose capacity based on the games you want installed at the same time, the device’s upgrade options, and room for updates—not the launcher alone. A small or rotating library may fit on a smaller drive; several large games call for more capacity, and 1 TB or more can be more practical for a large library. These are planning scenarios, not technical requirements.
- Capacity: Add the installed sizes of games you intend to keep, then allow room for updates and temporary files.
- Speed and workload: Internal NVMe storage is a common choice for frequently played games, but actual performance depends on the drive, interface, device, and workload.
- Expansion: A second internal drive, Steam Deck microSD card, or external drive may suit different devices and use cases.
- Headroom: Do not size a gaming drive only to the sum of today’s installed games. Operating-system updates, downloads, and ordinary computer use also need room.
There is no single free-space percentage that applies to every drive and operating system. Leave meaningful space for normal use and large game updates rather than planning to fill the advertised capacity.

How to free Steam storage safely
- Uninstall games you no longer play. Use Steam’s library controls so the client can update its records.
- Move games instead of downloading them again. Add or select the destination library in Settings > Storage, select the game, and choose Move. Valve says games can be moved between configured libraries without downloading them again; Steam may verify the files afterward. Its download and update guidance covers moving installations.
- Review optional content. Remove DLC or texture packs through the game’s available controls, and unsubscribe from Workshop items you no longer need.
- Resolve stalled downloads in Steam. Open the Download Manager and cancel failed or incomplete downloads you do not intend to resume.
- Clear the download cache only when troubleshooting. This is not a general-purpose way to remove installed games; after clearing it, you may need to sign in again or download some data again.
- Inspect other files with your operating system’s disk-usage tool. This helps distinguish Steam data from unrelated files on the same drive.
Do not manually delete steamapps, userdata, Proton prefixes, save folders, or unfamiliar Steam folders as a shortcut. They may contain installed games, saves, settings, or data Steam needs. Back up local saves before moving or removing files; some third-party games store saves outside the Steam folder, such as in Windows Documents, and Steam Cloud coverage is not universal.
Steam Deck: advertised storage is not all game space
Valve’s published Steam Deck technical specifications list 64 GB eMMC, 256 GB NVMe SSD, and 512 GB NVMe SSD configurations, along with a microSD card slot. These are device storage capacities, not guarantees of the amount available for games. SteamOS, system partitions, updates, shader caches, Proton data, desktop applications, and personal files use storage too.
Games can be installed to internal storage or a microSD card. Steam Deck formats supported cards as ext4 with casefolding when it formats them; see the Steam Deck FAQ. A card can add capacity, but loading behavior and performance may differ from an NVMe SSD, depending on the card, game, and workload. Compatibility is title-specific, so do not assume every game will work from every storage device.
Fix common Steam storage problems
Steam says there is not enough space
- Open Settings > Storage and confirm which drive or library Steam is using for the install or update.
- Cancel failed or incomplete downloads in the Download Manager if you do not intend to resume them.
- Restart Steam and check the drive’s usable free space in the operating system.
- If Steam offers it, repair the library folder; verify the game’s installed files if the problem persists.
- Move the game to a library with more room, or free additional space before retrying. Updates may need temporary room beyond the final patch size.
Games are not recognized after a drive move
Reconnect the original drive if it is removable, then open Steam’s Storage manager and add the existing library folder with the + control. Let Steam scan it. If needed, start installing the same game to that library so Steam can discover the existing files, then verify them.

Do not assume the save was deleted with the game or that Steam Cloud contains it. Check the game’s own save location and any publisher launcher data, and restore from a backup if available. Valve’s guidance notes that third-party saves may be outside the Steam directory.
An external library disconnects or performs poorly
A disconnected drive makes its library unavailable to Steam; poor sustained performance, a cable, enclosure, power-management setting, or file-system problem can also interfere. Valve warns that installing Steam on an external hard drive can cause performance issues; this is a caution, not a statement that every external drive will fail.
