Aternos does not give every Minecraft server the same amount of RAM. The allocation depends on the Minecraft version and server software. Aternos gives 2,400 MB as an official example for a Vanilla 1.20.1 server—about 2.4 GB—but that is not a universal amount. The exact allocation for your server appears in the Aternos server panel while it is online.
This is the server’s memory, not the RAM allocated to your Minecraft client. It is also separate from storage used for worlds, mods, plugins, and backups.

The short answer
Aternos uses software- and version-based RAM allocation rather than one fixed RAM tier for every free server. Its official documentation gives this example: a Vanilla Minecraft 1.20.1 server receives 2,400 MB, or approximately 2.4 GB. Aternos does not state on that page whether its MB figure uses decimal or binary units, so it is safest to quote the panel’s value as 2,400 MB.

Do not interpret that example as “Aternos gives everyone 2 GB” or “every Aternos server has 2.4 GB.” Your server’s allocation can differ according to its version and software, including Vanilla, Paper, Purpur, Forge, Fabric, and other modded configurations.

How Aternos decides how much RAM your server gets
Aternos assigns resources individually. The main factors are:
- Minecraft version: Newer versions can have different memory requirements.
- Server software: Vanilla, Paper, Purpur, Forge, Fabric, and other software do not have identical requirements.
- Modded content: Mod loaders and large modpacks generally need more memory than a lightweight Vanilla or plugin-based server.
A higher nominal allocation is not automatically the best choice. Aternos recommends Paper or Purpur for performance where they are appropriate, particularly for Vanilla-style or plugin-based servers. Those options are not substitutes for Forge or Fabric when a modpack requires a specific loader. Switching software can affect compatibility, configurations, commands, and world behavior, so create a backup first.
Aternos does not publish a complete public table listing the exact RAM allocation for every version and software combination. That is why claims such as “Aternos always gives 4 GB” should not be treated as current policy.

How to check your exact Aternos RAM
- Open the Aternos control panel.
- Open the relevant server.
- Start the server.
- While it is online, look at the server overview or server section.
- Read the displayed memory allocation and current usage.
The panel’s assigned or available memory is the number that matters for your particular server. Current usage is only the amount the Java process is using at that moment. These are not the same thing.
RAM is also different from storage. RAM is temporary working memory used while the server runs. Storage holds permanent files such as your world, mods, plugins, configuration files, and backups. A server can have enough RAM but run short of storage, or have plenty of storage while suffering from CPU-related lag.
Is 2.4 GB enough for a Minecraft server?
There is no reliable “one gigabyte equals a fixed number of players” formula. Whether roughly 2–3 GB is enough depends on what the server is doing:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Number of simultaneous players.
- Vanilla, Paper/Purpur, or modded gameplay.
- Modpack size and complexity.
- View distance and simulation distance.
- New-chunk generation while players explore.
- Mob farms, redstone machines, item buildup, and other entities.
- Plugins, datapacks, and chunk-loading systems.
- CPU performance and server tick rate.
As a practical guide, a small Vanilla, Paper, or Purpur server for a few friends may work acceptably with around 2–3 GB. A large modpack, heavily explored world, or server with many entities may require more. These are general expectations, not an Aternos performance guarantee.

RAM is only one possible bottleneck. More memory may help if the server is genuinely running out of memory, if a modpack needs a larger Java heap, or if many chunks and entities must remain active. It will not necessarily fix low TPS caused by CPU-heavy redstone, inefficient mods, excessive chunk generation, network latency, a busy host node, or a client-side FPS problem.
Aternos also notes that Java may retain memory for reuse rather than immediately returning it to the system. Therefore, a high displayed RAM percentage alone does not prove that the server needs more memory. Check crashes, console errors, and tick performance as well.
Can you manually add RAM to an Aternos server?
The ordinary free Aternos service does not provide a normal paid control for choosing an arbitrary RAM tier. Its current documentation describes allocation by server software and Minecraft version, then points users toward its temporary RAM Boost program or exaroton when more controllable resources are needed.

How the Aternos RAM Boost works
Aternos currently documents a partner promotion with Medal that can temporarily increase a server’s allocation. Under the documented terms, each qualifying clip provides:
- 500 MB of additional RAM.
- A duration of seven days.
- Up to five active boosts at once.
- Up to 2.5 GB of additional RAM when five boosts are active.
The documented process is:
- Install the Medal app on a Windows PC.
- Create or sign in to a Medal account.
- Record a Minecraft or Hytale clip using F8.
- Open Medal and go to Quests.
- Find the Aternos RAM Boost quest.
- Enter your Aternos server IP when prompted.
- Claim the boost.
- Restart the Aternos server so the extra memory becomes active.
Read the current Aternos RAM Boost instructions before relying on the offer. It is a partner promotion, so availability, regional eligibility, requirements, and limits can change. The boost is temporary rather than a permanent upgrade; when active boosts expire, the server can return to its previous allocation.
What to do if your Aternos server lags
Before changing hosts or chasing more RAM, identify the bottleneck.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check TPS and console messages: Look for tick problems, crashes, or mod and plugin errors rather than judging performance only by the RAM meter.
- Reduce view and simulation distance: These settings can reduce active chunks and server workload.
- Control entities: Remove unnecessary mobs, dropped items, minecarts, and oversized farms.
- Use suitable software: Paper or Purpur can be sensible for Vanilla-style or plugin-based servers, but modpacks must use their compatible loader.
- Remove unnecessary content: Test whether unused mods, plugins, or datapacks are causing the problem.
- Consider terrain pregeneration: Where compatible tools and software support it, pregenerating terrain can reduce the cost of generating new chunks during play.
- Test at peak load: A server that works with two players may behave differently with ten players exploring in different directions.
Make a world backup before changing server software, removing content, or performing major optimization. Also distinguish server lag from a player’s low FPS, internet latency, and Aternos startup or waiting times.

When Aternos is a good fit
Aternos is well suited to a small group that wants free hosting for intermittent sessions, especially with Vanilla, Paper, or Purpur gameplay and moderate worlds. Its free model is supported by advertising, and it is designed for players who can start the server when they want to play.
Aternos does not provide always-on 24/7 hosting. Its servers stop when the last player leaves, and attempts to keep one online with bots violate its rules. See the official 24/7 hosting policy.
When to move to paid hosting
Consider another service if you need:
- A selectable and predictable RAM allocation.
- A large modpack with known memory requirements.
- Always-on hosting.
- Consistent peak-time performance.
- More control over CPU, region, backups, networking, or server configuration.
exaroton: usage-based hosting from the same organization
exaroton is Aternos’s paid alternative. Its official pricing documentation says users can select between 2 GB and 16 GB of RAM and pay according to running time. The pricing signal checked on August 18, 2026 was 1 credit per GB of RAM per hour, with one credit worth €0.01. Under that formula, a 4 GB server costs €0.04 per running hour.
New accounts receive five free credits without a payment method, subject to the trial’s limitations. AutoStop and AutoStart can help stop an empty server and start it when someone tries to join. exaroton also documents a 10 GB per-server storage limit and a monthly storage charge of 10 credits, offset by credits spent running the server. Check the current pricing page and free-trial terms because prices and conditions can change.
Conventional monthly alternatives
BisectHosting advertises fixed monthly Minecraft plans with displayed tiers including 2 GB for $5.99 per month, 4 GB for $11.99, 6 GB for $17.99, and higher options. Apex Hosting’s retrieved official page displayed a recurring $14.99 option associated with a 16 GB DDR4 configuration and Ryzen hardware. These prices were displayed on August 18, 2026 and should be verified at checkout.
Monthly hosting can be easier to budget and may provide managed features, backups, support, and wider RAM choices. However, it can cost more than usage-based hosting for a server that is only played occasionally. These provider pages advertise their own features; the figures do not establish that one host is objectively faster without independent testing.
| Option | Billing | RAM control | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aternos | Free | Software/version-based | Casual, budget-conscious groups |
| exaroton | Hourly, credit-based | 2–16 GB documented | Occasional play with selectable resources |
| BisectHosting | Monthly | Fixed RAM tiers | Conventional hosting plans |
| Apex Hosting | Monthly | Paid RAM and hardware plans | Managed or higher-end hosting |
Bottom line
Aternos does not have one universal RAM amount. Its official example is 2,400 MB—about 2.4 GB—for Vanilla Minecraft 1.20.1. To find your actual allocation, start your server and read the memory value in its online server section. If performance is poor, investigate TPS, CPU load, entities, chunk generation, software compatibility, and network conditions before assuming RAM is the cause. For temporary extra capacity, the documented Medal boost can add up to 2.5 GB for seven days per boost cycle; for permanent control or 24/7 hosting, a paid service such as exaroton may be more appropriate.
