That means the complete cycle is much shorter than a real hour.
How the 20-minute cycle is calculated
A standard Minecraft day-and-night cycle contains 24,000 game ticks. At the normal rate of 20 ticks per second, that works out to 1,200 seconds:
- 24,000 ticks ÷ 20 ticks per second = 1,200 seconds.
- 1,200 seconds ÷ 60 = 20 minutes.
- 20 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.333… hours, or one-third of an hour.
Minecraft’s time conversion is 1,000 ticks per in-game hour, equal to 50 real-world seconds at the normal rate. The Minecraft Wiki’s units-of-measure reference gives the tick conversion and notes that tick rates can fall when a computer cannot keep up.
Does that mean daylight lasts 20 minutes?
No. The 20 minutes covers the entire cycle, including day, sunset, night, and sunrise. In the cycle timing listed by the Minecraft Wiki’s daylight-cycle reference, sunset occurs 10 real-time minutes into the cycle, and nighttime lasts 8 minutes and 20 seconds. So the daylight portion is only part of the 20-minute total.

When can a Minecraft day take longer?
The conversion assumes the world is advancing at the normal 20 ticks per second and that its daylight cycle is running. If a computer or server is keeping up with fewer ticks per real-world second, tick-based events take longer in elapsed time. Customized worlds or commands can also change whether or how the daylight cycle advances.
For Bedrock Edition, Microsoft’s time command reference lists named settings such as day, night, noon, midnight, sunrise, and sunset; it identifies day as tick 0. Those command values set or refer to in-game time—they do not change the standard tick-to-real-time calculation by themselves.

How to track time when you cannot see the sky
An in-game clock can show the time of day when you are underground or otherwise cannot see the sky. It is a gameplay aid, not something needed to calculate the cycle: at the normal rate, a complete Minecraft day and night still takes 20 real-world minutes.
