For a military sniper, the answer depends on the service, conflict, deployment, time period and whether the count includes only confirmed kills. For a video-game sniper, it depends on the game, mode and whether you mean kills per match, round or over a player’s lifetime.
Why there is no single average
“Sniper” can mean a military role or a player using a sniper weapon or class in a game. Neither interpretation has a meaningful average without defining who is counted, over what period and how a kill is recorded. The official sources reviewed describe military duties and missions, but do not publish a general kill-count average.
A military tally would also need a clear counting rule, such as confirmed kills rather than claims. A game statistic needs its title and mode, and often its platform or player population, before comparisons are meaningful.
What military snipers do beyond shooting
The U.S. Army Sniper Course describes missions that include precision fires against enemy personnel and equipment, intelligence gathering, counter-sniper operations, infiltration and overwatch, support-by-fire positions, ballistic interdiction of improvised explosive devices, and disrupting enemy operations. The course description does not give an average kill count. U.S. Army Sniper Course

An Army report describes observation and intelligence reporting as an important part of a sniper team’s work: remaining undetected and reporting enemy movements, equipment and patterns of life. The United States Army, “Army Sniper school candidates discover the key to lethality is ‘a high tolerance for discomfort’” (2017)
Observation is not a universal percentage
In a separate 2017 Army article, sniper school operations noncommissioned officer Eric Doolittle characterized the job as 95 percent observing and reporting and 5 percent shooting. That is his description in the article, not a measured statistic for all snipers. The same article quotes an unnamed instructor saying, “It’s not the movies, you don’t shoot people daily, and there are no pats on the backs for doing a good job.” The United States Army, “’Don’t come here unless you are prepared’: U.S. Army Sniper School sets high bar for candidates” (2017)

Does the often-repeated “5–6 kills per day” figure hold up?
No. Some answer pages repeat an estimate of 5–6 kills per day, sometimes framed as a rate during periods of peak engagement, but they do not provide a traceable primary dataset, a defined population and time period, or a clear counting method. It should not be treated as a typical military sniper’s rate. Games Learning Society (2025); SplicedOnline (2024)
