Are the bonus levels included in the 48?
No. Konami’s Sega Genesis instruction manual describes “48 levels” and then separately tells players to find “the 7 bonus levels.” That wording distinguishes the campaign count from the bonus content. It does not establish that every version or later re-release uses the same counting convention.
What is the last numbered level?
A GameFAQs walkthrough for the SNES version numbers the campaign through Level 48, titled “Curse of the Tongue.” This supports the 48-level campaign count, though it is a community guide rather than an official source.
Does the count apply to every version?
The 48-main-level figure is directly supported by the Genesis manual, and the SNES walkthrough independently reaches Level 48. Available documentation does not settle whether bonus stages are counted the same way in every edition, so treat “48 main levels, plus separately mentioned bonus levels” as the precise answer rather than assuming a universal combined total.
