You can stack Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for up to 36 months total on an account in supported regions. The cap includes the time already on your subscription; it is not 36 additional months. Check your current balance and the code’s terms before redeeming near the limit.
What does the 36-month limit mean?
The 36-month figure is the maximum total Ultimate subscription time on an account, rather than a per-code allowance. Microsoft Community Support stated the limit applies in supported regions in an answer dated July 1, 2025, which points to Xbox Support’s extension-limits page. That page could not be accessed to verify its current wording, so check the live terms and your account balance before redeeming a code close to the cap.
For example, if your account already has 10 months remaining, you have room for no more than 26 months before reaching a 36-month total. The amount of time a code adds can depend on its terms; do not assume every code adds the same number of months.
How to redeem a code without adding it to the wrong account
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that holds the Game Pass Ultimate subscription you want to extend.
- Check the account’s current subscription balance and the code’s redemption terms.
- Redeem the code only if the resulting balance will remain within the account’s extension limit.
Xbox warns that redeemed codes cannot be transferred afterward, so confirm the signed-in account before completing redemption: Xbox code redemption.

Does converting another subscription add months the same way?
No. Adding a code to an existing Ultimate subscription and converting time from another plan are different situations. When Ultimate launched in preview in 2019, Xbox described a historical conversion rule: eligible Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Live Gold time converted at a 1:1 ratio based on days remaining, subject to a 36-month maximum. That launch-era rule is not a current conversion table. Check the current terms for the specific plan and account before converting: Xbox Wire’s May 9, 2019 announcement.
Can you use an Xbox gift card to stack months?
A gift card adds account balance, not a fixed duration of Game Pass Ultimate. Microsoft Support says gift-card balance can be used for Game Pass subscriptions in most regions; how much time it buys depends on local pricing and eligibility. Confirm the available subscription option and price in your region before relying on a particular amount of credit: Microsoft Support: redeem a gift card or code.
