You don’t need a specific number of extra mouse buttons to play World of Warcraft. The game’s controls can be arranged across keyboard and mouse, and you can bind actions to either. Extra buttons are optional: they’re useful if you prefer moving some commands to your mouse hand, but more buttons aren’t automatically better.
How WoW’s controls use the mouse and keyboard
Blizzard’s basic controls guide describes using the keyboard for movement and holding the right mouse button to control the camera. The guide presents the mouse and keyboard as a combined control setup, not a choice between using one or the other.
You can customize that setup in the Key Bindings menu. Blizzard’s new-player key-binding tips explain that actions can be assigned to a keyboard key or a mouse button. That flexibility means there is no official extra-button count you must meet.
When extra mouse buttons are useful
Extra buttons can put some commands within reach of your mouse hand instead of requiring you to reach across the keyboard. Whether that helps depends on which controls you prefer near each hand and whether you can comfortably reach and distinguish the buttons while playing.

Why more buttons aren’t always better
In a November 22, 2009 article about Blizzard’s collaboration with SteelSeries on a World of Warcraft mouse, Blizzard described an 11-button design and explained that modifier keys could expand the commands assigned to its extra buttons. The same article cautioned that too many buttons could shift the bottleneck from one hand to the other.
The 11-button mouse is a historical product-design example, not a current recommendation or a minimum requirement for WoW. It illustrates the trade-off: putting more commands on the mouse can help if that suits your habits, but only when the buttons remain easy for you to use.

How to choose a setup
- Start with the controls you already use. Keep movement and camera control comfortable with your keyboard-and-mouse arrangement.
- Identify commands you want closer to your mouse hand. Consider only the inputs you find inconvenient on the keyboard.
- Bind a few and try them. Use the Key Bindings menu to assign actions to keyboard keys or mouse buttons.
- Keep or change the setup based on comfort. If you struggle to reach or distinguish a button, use a different binding or keep that command on the keyboard.
An MMO mouse is one option if you specifically want a cluster of extra buttons; it is not necessary just because you play WoW. The available official guidance supports configurable bindings, not a universal button count or a particular mouse model.
