You need 10 obsidian blocks to build the smallest Nether portal frame. Make it 4 blocks wide and 5 blocks tall, leaving the four corner positions empty; the opening inside will be 2 blocks wide by 3 blocks tall.
Minimum Nether portal frame dimensions
The smallest valid frame has outside dimensions of 4 blocks across by 5 blocks high. Its sides and top and bottom edges use 10 obsidian blocks in total, with a 2-by-3-block opening in the middle. The Minecraft Wiki describes portal frames as ranging from 4×5 up to 23×23 blocks (Minecraft Wiki: Obsidian).
Are the corners required?
No. The four corner blocks are optional, so you can leave them empty and use the 10-block minimum. If you fill all four corners of the same frame with obsidian, it takes 14 blocks.
How to build and activate the frame
- Place four obsidian blocks across the bottom.
- Build each side upward by three more blocks, leaving a 2-block-wide space between the sides.
- Place four obsidian blocks across the top to complete the 4-by-5 outer frame. Leave the corners empty if you are conserving obsidian.
- Set the inside of the frame on fire to activate the portal. Flint and steel is one stated option; the sources cited here do not establish a complete list of activation methods.
Can a ruined portal save obsidian?
Yes. You may be able to repair a ruined portal instead of building a new frame, but the number of blocks you need depends on which parts are missing or unsuitable. Check the structure and count the usable frame blocks before gathering more obsidian (Minecraft Wiki: Tutorial: Achievement guide).
