A third-party tracker currently lists 12.3 million VAC-banned accounts, but it describes its figures as sample-based—not a Valve total or a count of unique people.
What is the reported VAC-ban count?
VAC-Ban’s live dashboard displays 12.3 million VAC-banned accounts. That is the tracker’s indexed-account figure, not an official Valve statistic. The dashboard is dynamic; the figure was accessed in 2026 and does not state when the count was first measured. See VAC-Ban’s live dashboard.

The tracker’s methodology says Valve does not publish official global counts and characterizes its own statistics as sample-based measurements. Its index lists 184.2 million unique IDs tracked, while its methodology page reports 97.5 million accounts ban-checked. Those describe the tracker’s index and checked subset, respectively—not all Steam accounts, a representative census, or the number of people who have been banned. Read VAC-Ban’s methodology.
Why the account figure is not a people count
An account is not necessarily one person: someone can have multiple Steam accounts. Tracker coverage is also incomplete, and the available methodology does not establish that its indexed accounts represent all banned accounts. The 12.3 million figure therefore cannot be converted into a reliable count of unique people.

- 184.2 million: unique IDs tracked by VAC-Ban, according to its live dashboard.
- 97.5 million: accounts ban-checked, according to VAC-Ban’s methodology page.
These figures use different units and describe the tracker’s activity and coverage. None is a Valve-published global total.
What counts as a VAC ban?
Valve describes Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) as an automated system that detects cheats installed on a user’s computer when the user connects to a VAC-secured server. A VAC ban blocks the account from playing on VAC-secured servers for the affected game. Valve says it does not disclose which cheat triggered a ban because that information could help cheat developers. Valve’s VAC support page explains the system.

VAC bans should not be added together with other kinds of bans and presented as one VAC total:
- Game bans are implemented by game developers and apply to the particular game using that feature. Valve’s game-ban explanation.
- Server bans are issued by server administrators and can restrict access to those administrators’ servers.
Can a VAC ban be appealed or removed?
Valve says VAC bans are permanent, non-negotiable, and cannot be removed by Steam Support; its appeal page says they cannot be appealed. If Valve determines that a ban was issued incorrectly, however, it says the ban will be removed automatically after investigation. Valve’s VAC System page and ban-appeal guidance cover those policies.
