The Expansion Pass adds three playable roster entries, bringing the total to 21. Purah & Robbie count as one duo entry, not two separate entries.
Base game: 18 playable characters
The original Nintendo Switch game’s base roster comprises these 18 playable entries:
- Link
- Impa
- Zelda
- Mipha
- Daruk
- Revali
- Urbosa
- Hestu
- Sidon
- Yunobo
- Teba
- Riju
- Master Kohga
- King Rhoam
- Great Fairies
- Monk Maz Koshia
- Terrako
- Calamity Ganon
They do not all become available in the same way: some unlock as you progress through the story, while others require optional challenges or post-game tasks. Nintendo Wire’s roster guide lists the characters and their unlock requirements.
With the Expansion Pass: 21 playable entries
Nintendo’s Expansion Pass adds three entries across its two waves:
#1 Best Overall
- See Hyrule 100 years before the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game and experience the events of the Great Calamity.
- Join the struggle that brought Hyrule to its knees. Learn more about Zelda, the King of Hyrule, the four champions; Urbosa, Revali, Mipha, Daruk and more through dramatic cutscenes as they try to save the kingdom from Calamity. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is the only way to see first-hand what happened 100 years ago.
- Battle hordes of Hyrule’s most formidable foes - From barbaric Bokoblins to towering Lynels, Ganon’s troops have emerged in droves. Revisit iconic locations such as Zoras Domain, Death Mountain and Hyrule Field and use your playable heroes’ distinct abilities to carve through hundreds of enemies to save Hyrule from the impending Calamity.
- Team up and take on Ganon - Pass a Joy-Con to a friend and take on Calamity Ganon as a team in local co-op multiplayer. Fight side-by-side or divide your efforts to cover more ground, complete objectives and defeat the forces of darkness!
- Wave 1, Pulse of the Ancients: Battle-Tested Guardian.
- Wave 2, Guardian of Remembrance: Purah & Robbie, presented as one playable duo, plus one additional playable character.
That makes the count 18 base-game entries plus three Expansion Pass entries, or 21 total. Nintendo’s Wave 2 description does not name the additional character, so the official listing cited here supports the count but not a name for that entry. The pass also includes weapons, stages, story sequences, challenges, and other features; those are not additional playable characters. Nintendo’s Expansion Pass page describes the waves and their content, and Nintendo’s Wave 2 listing describes the duo and the additional character.

These totals count playable roster entries, rather than the number of individual people represented. In particular, Purah & Robbie occupy one entry together. The base-game total is available without buying the Expansion Pass; the DLC is needed for the three added entries and requires the full game.
Rank #2
- Hyrule Warriors is an action game based on the Dynasty Warriors gameplay mechanics but set in the Zelda universe.
- This Definitive Edition contains all previous DLCs in a complete package
- Combat large numbers of enemies to take over enemy bases or defeat bosses
- Choose between 29 playable characters including Link, Zelda and even Ganondorf
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch only.
The figures refer to the original Nintendo Switch version and its Expansion Pass. Nintendo says that version’s DLC is compatible with Nintendo Switch 2, but it is separate from Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Definitive Edition, which is not compatible with the Nintendo Switch version’s DLC. See Nintendo’s version and compatibility information before applying this count to another edition.
