Forty-eight is the practical starting point shown in Cfx.re’s vanilla FXServer example and the highest OneSync capacity documented as free. Treat that number as a cap to grow into, not proof that your hardware, scripts, or network can sustain 48 simultaneous players.
The practical answer: start at 32–48 slots
A slot is one concurrent player connection your server is configured to accept. It is not a guarantee that the server will remain responsive at that population. Script execution time, entity density, database calls, network saturation, client hardware, and hosting limits determine whether the configured cap is actually usable.

Starting at 32 gives you room for a small community while keeping the operational surface manageable. Moving to 48 aligns with Cfx.re’s current vanilla FXServer setup, which enables OneSync and sets sv_maxclients 48. Cfx.re documents OneSync as free up to 48 slots, making 48 the clearest baseline when your resources and host can handle it.
There is no authoritative “ideal” number for every RedM roleplay, economy, PvP, or mixed server. The correct cap is the highest population you can support consistently during your busiest recurring period, with your most demanding resources active.

What actually controls the player limit
sv_maxclients is the capacity setting
The current Cfx.re server-command reference defines sv_maxclients as an integer from 1 to 2048. Set it in your server configuration, usually server.cfg. The value controls the normal maximum number of connected clients; it does not create additional CPU, memory, database, or bandwidth capacity.
RedM must identify itself as RDR3
A RedM configuration uses gamename rdr3. A minimal configuration based on Cfx.re’s documented example is:

set onesync on
sv_maxclients 48
Keep the setting in the configuration file that your startup command actually loads. If you edit a different file, restart the server, and see no change, verify the launch command and the console output before troubleshooting anything else.
OneSync thresholds matter
Cfx.re’s command reference specifies that values starting at 32 require OneSync. Values above 64 require OneSync explicitly set to on. In practice, plan to enable OneSync before reaching 32 and use set onesync on when you intend to exceed 64.
| Configured cap | OneSync requirement | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| 1–31 | OneSync is not required by the documented threshold | Useful for private tests or very small communities |
| 32–48 | OneSync required | Normal starting range; up to 48 is the documented free OneSync boundary |
| 49–64 | OneSync required | More than 48 introduces a paid-capacity requirement |
| 65–2048 | onesync on required |
Technical ceiling only; requires licensing, compatible resources, and measured capacity |
How OneSync changes the decision
OneSync is Cfx.re’s synchronization system for larger populations and more extensive world state. The RedM announcement dated August 10, 2021, states that OneSync is available to everyone on RedM and that RedM supports OneSync Infinity under the same slot policy used for FiveM.

OneSync Infinity documentation describes support for populations up to 2048 players in the implementation it covers. That figure is a documented technical ceiling, not a recommendation for an ordinary RedM community. Reaching a large number depends on your artifact version, script compatibility, entity behavior, host resources, subscription tier, and the way players are distributed through the world.
Large populations can also overload individual clients when too many entities are within streaming range. A server that accepts 128 connections may still provide a poor experience if crowded towns, custom interiors, vehicles, peds, or synchronized activities create excessive client or server work. Population density and resource behavior matter as much as the headline slot count.
Recommended starting caps by community stage
The following bands are planning heuristics, not Cfx.re statistics or benchmark results. Adjust them using your own concurrency and performance data.
| Community situation | Suggested starting cap | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Private test, friends, or early development | 16–32 | Keeps testing manageable; 32 is the first documented OneSync threshold |
| New public roleplay community | 32–48 | Matches the standard 48-slot setup and free OneSync boundary |
| Established community with regular queue pressure | 48–64 | Consider only after demand and performance justify paid capacity above 48 |
| Large, proven community | 64–128 or more | Requires onesync on above 64, compatible resources, and load validation |
A cap below your community’s occasional peak can create an avoidable queue, but a cap far above normal demand can increase costs and expose untested failure modes. Set the value for the population you can serve reliably, not for a future community you have not yet built.
A data-based method for choosing your cap
1. Measure recurring peak concurrency
Record simultaneous players during your busiest repeatable periods, such as weekend evenings or scheduled events. Note how often the server reaches its cap and how long queues remain. A single launch-day spike is not enough evidence for a permanent increase.

2. Observe the workload at that peak
Monitor server tick time, resource or script CPU time, system CPU and memory use, database latency, and network throughput while the busiest scripts are active. Check whether slowdowns occur only in crowded locations or across the whole map. The sources do not provide a universal RedM CPU, RAM, or bandwidth requirement, so do not treat an arbitrary hardware number as a tested guarantee.
3. Audit resources and artifacts
Confirm that every resource supports OneSync Infinity and that your server artifact is current. Cfx.re’s support guidance specifically recommends the latest artifact when raising the cap above 48. Review resources that create or synchronize large numbers of entities, poll databases frequently, or run work for every connected player.
4. Check licensing and host limits
Before changing the number, verify that your Cfx.re subscription tier permits it and that the host’s plan exposes the same ceiling. A provider may impose a lower limit even when the convar accepts a higher integer. Confirm available CPU, memory, storage performance, database service, backups, location, and upgrade path.
5. Increase in small steps
Raise the cap modestly, restart, and observe a normal busy period before increasing it again. Compare logs, tick behavior, queue times, and player reports with the previous setting. If stability worsens, return to the last known-good value while you identify the resource or infrastructure bottleneck.

How to increase sv_maxclients safely
- Back up your configuration. Save the current
server.cfgand note the artifact version and subscription tier. - Confirm RedM and OneSync settings. Ensure the file contains
set gamename rdr3. Useset onesync onfor a cap above 64; enable OneSync before using 32 or more slots. - Change only the cap first. Edit
sv_maxclientsto the next tested value, such as 32 to 48 or 48 to 64. Avoid changing multiple major resources at the same time, or you will not know which change caused a regression. - Restart the server. The new convar takes effect on restart. Check the startup console for configuration or entitlement errors.
- Run a realistic load period. Test crowded interiors, jobs, inventories, vehicles, voice, and database-heavy features rather than connecting idle clients only.
- Review results and decide. Keep the new value only if performance remains stable and the subscription and host limits are satisfied. Otherwise restore the previous value and troubleshoot.
If the displayed player limit does not change, check for a second configuration file, a panel-level override, a provider-imposed ceiling, an outdated artifact, or a subscription restriction. Restart after correcting the cause.

Licensing and hosting above 48 slots
Cfx.re hosting guidance states that more than 48 slots requires a FiveM Element Club Argentum-or-higher subscription. The exact entitlement and current terms should be verified in your account before publication or purchase because subscription policies can change. A higher sv_maxclients value alone does not grant that capacity.
When comparing hosting plans, evaluate the following together:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Advertised RedM slot ceiling and whether the limit is enforced by the provider
- Dedicated or shared CPU allocation and how usage is reported
- Memory capacity and storage performance for the server and database
- OneSync support, artifact update process, and restart controls
- Data-center location and latency for your player base
- Backups, database options, monitoring, and the process for upgrading
No general hosting price can be inferred from the slot number. Two plans advertising 64 slots may provide very different CPU time, storage, network paths, or support, so compare the underlying allocation rather than the advertised cap alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the 2048 figure does—and does not—mean
The documented sv_maxclients range tops out at 2048, and OneSync Infinity documentation describes support for up to 2048 players. This is the largest accepted configuration range, not evidence that a typical RedM server should target 2048. A server at that scale needs a proven architecture, compatible resources, appropriate licensing, substantial infrastructure, and staged load testing.
At high populations, entity streaming becomes a design constraint. If many players and scripted entities occupy the same area, clients may receive more state than they can process even when the server process itself appears healthy. Splitting activities across locations, reducing unnecessary entity creation, and testing dense scenes are operational decisions that cannot be replaced by setting a larger integer.

Common scenarios and sensible choices
Private development server
Use 16–32 slots while building resources and testing jobs. A smaller cap makes it easier to reproduce bugs and keeps test sessions focused. Move to 32 only when you are ready to test OneSync behavior.
New public roleplay launch
Choose 32 or 48, depending on expected attendance and resource maturity. Forty-eight is appropriate when you have validated your scripts and want the documented free OneSync boundary; 32 is safer when the community is still forming or the workload is unproven.
Regular queue pressure
If the server reaches its cap repeatedly during normal peak periods, first determine whether the queue represents sustained demand and whether the current population is stable. If both are true, test 48 to 64, account for the paid requirement above 48, and confirm the host can provide the required resources.
Large established network
Consider 64–128 or more only after measuring live performance and validating every critical resource with OneSync Infinity. Above 64, configure onesync on; above 48, confirm the required subscription and host entitlement before advertising the new capacity.
Player and owner prerequisites
Every player needs a fully updated, legal PC installation of Red Dead Redemption 2. Cfx.re lists Steam, Epic Games, and Rockstar Warehouse among common purchase channels. The game purchase is a client prerequisite; it does not add server slots or increase server capacity.
Owners also need a current RedM server artifact, a configuration file that is actually loaded at startup, resources compatible with the selected synchronization mode, and a host plan that permits the intended cap.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting a failed slot increase
- Players still see the old limit: verify the active configuration path, restart, and check for a control-panel override.
- The server refuses a value above 48: check the Element Club entitlement and provider ceiling; the convar range alone is not sufficient.
- A value of 32 or more behaves incorrectly: confirm OneSync is enabled and that resources support it.
- A value above 64 fails to start or does not apply: use
set onesync on, update the artifact, and review startup errors. - Performance collapses after increasing the cap: return to the last stable value, identify high-CPU or high-entity resources, and test again in a controlled step.
- Clients crash or stutter in busy areas: investigate entity density and streaming range; a lower global cap may not solve a localized density problem.
