There is no universal player limit for a racing game party. The maximum depends on the game, platform and mode: online races, private groups, local multiplayer, wireless play and LAN sessions can all have different capacities. Check the specific mode—not just a game’s headline online-player count—before inviting everyone.
How to interpret a racing game’s player limit
“Party size” can mean several different things: players in an online session, racers in one event, friends in a private group, players sharing a console, or participants connected over local wireless or LAN. Those numbers are not interchangeable. A game may support a large online session while allowing fewer players in a particular race or on one console.
Platform matters, too. When comparing games, look for the exact mode and platform, whether the figure is per console or for the whole session, and any subscription or progression requirements.
Official player-count examples
| Game | Mode and maximum | Conditions and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | Online: up to 12 players. Local wireless: up to 8. LAN: up to 12. | Nintendo Support specifies online play for 2–12 players, with up to two per console; wireless play for 2–8, also up to two per console. Nintendo says a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for the cited online modes. These are separate modes, not one shared party cap. Nintendo’s setup and mode details. |
| Gran Turismo 7 | Local multiplayer: up to four players on PS5; up to two on PS4. | Each player needs a controller. This is a local-play limit, not an online lobby maximum. Gran Turismo 7 Online Manual. |
| The Crew Motorfest | Ubisoft lists up to 32 players online; Grand Race supports up to 28. Demolition Royale has 32 players divided among eight Crews. | The listed modes unlock after completing the introduction and unlocking at least one Playlist. Ubisoft says console access may require an active online subscription. Its support entry was updated October 1, 2026. Ubisoft Support. |
| Forza Horizon 5 (PS5) | Up to 12 online players. | This count comes from the PS5 listing, which says PS Plus is required. It should not be assumed to describe every platform or mode. PlayStation game page. |
What to check before inviting a group
- Match the mode to the count: confirm whether the number applies to a single race, an online session, a private group, local play, wireless play or LAN.
- Check players per console: a session total may include multiple players on one system. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, for example, allows up to two per console in the cited online and wireless modes.
- Confirm the platform: Gran Turismo 7’s local limit differs between PS5 and PS4, and the Forza Horizon 5 figure cited here is specifically from its PS5 listing.
- Look for access requirements: online play may require a platform subscription, and some modes may be locked behind introductory progress. The Crew Motorfest also has a specific cross-play guide, but cross-play should not be assumed for every racing game. Ubisoft’s Motorfest starting guide.
Choosing the right number for your group
Start with the number of people who will play at once, then decide whether they will share consoles or each use their own. Match that setup to a game’s stated mode capacity. If you want one event with the whole group, use the event’s limit rather than the larger online-session count; if you are gathering on one console, use the local multiplayer limit.
