Standard Tetris has seven shapes, officially called Tetriminos: I, O, T, L, J, S, and Z. Each is made of four squares connected along their sides.

Do rotations count as different shapes?
No. Turning a Tetrimino changes its orientation, not its piece type. For example, the I piece may lie horizontally or stand vertically, but it remains the I Tetrimino. The number of orientations a player may see varies by piece and by how equivalent positions are counted; those orientations do not add to the standard total of seven.

What does “Tetrimino” mean?
A Tetrimino is a shape made from four smaller squares, joined edge to edge. The 2009 Tetris Design Guideline uses the term for four connected Minos and lists the types as O, I, T, L, J, S, and Z. “Tetriminos” is the spelling used by the official Tetris site.
