There is no universal concurrent-user limit for a Node.js Socket.IO server. The usable capacity is the largest workload that stays within your latency, error-rate, memory, and availability targets during a repeatable load test. A process serving mostly idle WebSocket connections can support a very different number of users from one broadcasting large events to thousands of recipients several times per second.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Measure connections together with events per second, broadcast fan-out, payload size, transport mix, reconnect behavior, CPU, memory, event-loop delay, and network throughput. The resulting number is a capacity figure for your workload and infrastructure—not a guarantee for every Socket.IO application.

What “users” means in a Socket.IO capacity test
“Users” is an imprecise benchmark label. A user may hold one browser tab, several tabs, a mobile client that reconnects frequently, or a connection that remains open but sends and receives nothing for minutes. Capacity planning becomes useful only after you describe the workload in measurable terms.
Concurrent connections
This is the number of live Socket.IO sessions at one time. It mainly consumes file descriptors, socket buffers, connection bookkeeping, heartbeat traffic, and memory. It does not tell you how much application work the server is doing.

Events per second
Record inbound events, outbound events, and total packets separately. Authentication, validation, database calls, serialization, compression, and application callbacks can make a low connection count expensive when event frequency is high.
Broadcast fan-out
An event sent to one client is not equivalent to an event sent to a room of 100 or 10,000 clients. Include the average and maximum room size, the percentage of events that are one-to-one, and the percentage broadcast to rooms or namespaces.
Payload and transport
Measure payload bytes before and after any encoding or compression that your deployment uses. Test the actual share of WebSocket and HTTP long-polling connections. Polling has different request, load-balancer, and session-affinity behavior from an upgraded WebSocket.

Reconnect behavior
A reconnect storm can overload a healthy server after a network interruption or deployment. Record connection attempts per second, authentication work per attempt, failed handshakes, and the time required to return to the normal connection level.
Why there is no authoritative “maximum users” number
Socket.IO’s official documentation does not publish a universal concurrent-user figure. Any number quoted without a workload, latency target, payload, transport mix, and hardware description is a result from someone else’s test, not a limit you can safely apply to your service.
Two servers with the same CPU count can reach different limits because of Node.js and Socket.IO versions, operating-system limits, TLS termination, network bandwidth, garbage-collection behavior, application code, external services, and load-balancer configuration. Even the same server can have separate limits for idle connections, chat-style messages, state updates, and large room broadcasts.

Architecture choices and what they change
| Architecture | Connection coordination | Broadcast behavior | Operational considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| One Node.js process with the default adapter | All sockets and rooms live in one process; the adapter is in memory. | Rooms and broadcasts are local to that process. | Simplest deployment, but one process and one host provide the capacity and failure boundary. |
| Clustered workers on one host | Workers are separate processes. A front end must route a client consistently when polling is used, and workers need a method to coordinate events. | Without cross-worker coordination, a broadcast handled by one worker is not automatically delivered by another. | Uses more CPU cores but adds worker supervision, routing, and recovery cases. |
| Multiple hosts with a Socket.IO adapter | Each host has its own process; an adapter forwards packets between instances. | Cross-host broadcasts can reach clients connected to different instances when the adapter is configured correctly. | Requires adapter infrastructure, health checks, capacity planning for the adapter, and load-balancer design. |
The default in-memory adapter is appropriate for a single process. Socket.IO’s adapter documentation states that when you scale to multiple Socket.IO servers, you must replace it with another implementation so events are routed to all clients. Adding more processes without that coordination can create a deceptively healthy connection count while users silently miss broadcasts.
Variables that determine your practical limit
- Connection profile: idle, periodically active, or continuously active sessions.
- Read/write ratio: how many events each client sends and receives per second.
- Room topology: number of rooms, average and maximum membership, and how often users join or leave.
- Payload size: median, p95, and maximum serialized event size.
- Serialization and compression: CPU cost and temporary allocations for each packet.
- Authentication and authorization: work performed during the initial handshake and on reconnect.
- External dependencies: database, cache, API, or message-broker latency triggered by events.
- Transport mix: WebSocket upgrades versus clients remaining on HTTP long-polling.
- Failure behavior: reconnect backoff, recovery requests, and the number of clients affected by a node failure.
- Service-level objectives: maximum p95 or p99 event latency, acceptable error rate, event-loop delay, and memory ceiling.
Set a capacity target before you test
Write a pass/fail definition before generating load. For example, a test might pass only while p99 server-to-client latency remains below your product requirement, event-loop delay stays below its limit, connection errors remain below a chosen rate, and resident memory does not trend toward exhaustion. The exact thresholds belong to your application; a test without them merely produces a large number.

- Payload sizes and whether compression is enabled.
- Heartbeat interval and expected timeout behavior.
- Authentication cost and any database or cache calls.

- Instrument the server. Capture active sockets, connection and disconnection rates, inbound and outbound events, room fan-out, payload bytes, handshake failures, and adapter errors. Export CPU, heap used, resident memory, garbage-collection pauses, event-loop delay, open file descriptors, network throughput, and load-balancer errors.
- Build a real client model. Use Socket.IO-compatible clients that perform the same authentication, namespace and room joins, event acknowledgements, pacing, and disconnect handling as production clients. Do not treat a TCP connection generator as an equivalent test.
- Warm up the system. Establish a baseline at a low connection count. Confirm that heartbeats, room membership, metrics, and broadcasts behave correctly before increasing load.
- Ramp gradually. Increase connections in controlled steps while holding the behavior model constant. At each step, wait long enough to observe garbage collection, memory stabilization, and latency percentiles rather than sampling only the first few seconds.
- Increase traffic as well as connections. Run separate scenarios for idle sockets, normal activity, high event rates, and large fan-out. A connection-only test cannot reveal serialization, broadcast, or network bottlenecks.
- Test reconnect storms. Disconnect a controlled percentage of clients at once or simulate a brief network outage. Measure handshake throughput, authentication load, recovery time, and whether existing clients experience elevated latency.
- Continue until a defined limit is breached. Stop when p99 latency, error rate, dropped connections, event-loop delay, memory, file descriptors, or network bandwidth crosses your threshold. Record the last passing level and the first failing level.
- Repeat after every material change. Re-run the matrix after changing Node.js, Socket.IO, adapters, payload schemas, compression, TLS termination, host size, kernel limits, or load-balancer settings.
Metrics that reveal the bottleneck
| Signal | What a rising value can indicate | Useful follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Event-loop delay | Synchronous application work, serialization, compression, or garbage collection is blocking callbacks. | Profile handlers, reduce synchronous work, and move expensive jobs out of the event loop. |
| p95/p99 event latency | Queues are forming even if average latency looks acceptable. | Separate handshake, one-to-one, and broadcast latency; inspect downstream services. |
| Heap and resident memory | Per-socket state, room membership, buffers, or a leak is limiting concurrency. | Observe memory after load stops; a plateau differs from a steady climb. |
| Network throughput | Broadcast bytes, TLS, or polling responses are saturating the interface. | Check payload size, fan-out, compression cost, and interface headroom. |
| CPU by process | Packet processing, JSON work, encryption, compression, or application handlers are CPU-bound. | Compare idle and active scenarios to isolate per-connection from per-event cost. |
| Reconnect and handshake errors | Authentication, session affinity, rate limits, or a dependency is failing under bursts. | Inspect load-balancer logs and dependency latency during the burst. |
Do you need Redis for multiple Socket.IO servers?
You need a cross-node adapter when clients connected to different Socket.IO processes must receive the same rooms, broadcasts, or targeted events. Redis Pub/Sub is an official adapter option: it forwards packets between Socket.IO servers through Redis. The adapter is not a magic capacity multiplier; it adds network traffic, Redis operations, and another service whose latency and availability must be included in the test.
For new Redis deployments, the current Socket.IO documentation recommends the sharded adapter with Redis 7.0 sharded Pub/Sub. Select an implementation that matches your Redis version and operational model, then test adapter publish latency, subscription traffic, failover, and behavior when Redis is unavailable.

Do Socket.IO servers need sticky sessions?
Sticky sessions remain required in a multi-server deployment when HTTP long-polling is enabled. A polling client makes a sequence of HTTP requests that must reach the server holding its session unless the deployment provides an equivalent shared-session design. The official Redis adapter documentation explicitly retains this requirement.
If every client successfully uses WebSocket transport, the long-polling affinity requirement is reduced after upgrade, but you still need a correct handshake route, health checks, and a plan for failed nodes. Do not disable affinity merely because most clients eventually use WebSockets; test initial handshakes, failed upgrades, older clients, and network conditions that force polling.
Connection-state recovery is not extra capacity
Socket.IO added connection-state recovery in version 4.6.0 for intermittent disconnections. It can restore a client’s state after a short interruption when the configured recovery window and server conditions allow it. Configure a sensible maximum disconnection duration rather than an unlimited value, and test how much state is retained per client.
Recovery improves resilience and user experience; it does not prove that the server can process more concurrent traffic. A recovery burst can itself consume memory, bandwidth, and CPU, so include recovery and replay traffic in capacity tests.
Illustrative fan-out calculation
Suppose an application sends a 2 KB serialized event to 10,000 recipients five times per second. Before protocol overhead, encryption, and framing, that pattern represents approximately 100 MB/s of outbound payload (2 KB × 10,000 × 5). The arithmetic is only an illustration, not a benchmark or a recommended limit. It shows why “10,000 connected users” is incomplete: changing the event to 200 bytes, sending it once per second, or delivering it to one recipient produces a radically different workload.
Common capacity-test mistakes and fixes
- Quoting a connection count from another blog: replace it with a result tied to your hardware, software versions, workload, and SLOs.
- Testing idle sockets only: add normal events, room broadcasts, payload sizes, and reconnects.
- Watching average latency: track p95 and p99; queueing problems often appear in the tail first.
- Adding servers without an adapter: configure and test cross-node event routing before trusting the result.
- Ignoring polling clients: measure transport distribution and configure session affinity where polling is enabled.
- Stopping at connection establishment: hold the load long enough to expose memory growth and garbage-collection effects.
- Overlooking the load generator: verify that the generator, its network, and its file-descriptor limits are not the first components to saturate.
A practical capacity statement
Publish your result as a qualified statement: “Under this Node.js and Socket.IO version, host size, adapter, transport mix, payload distribution, event rate, fan-out, and reconnect scenario, the deployment sustained X concurrent connections while meeting the stated p99 latency, error-rate, memory, and event-loop limits.” That wording is useful because another engineer can reproduce it and understand exactly what the number does—and does not—mean.
