How March of Giants Compares With Other Team-Based MOBAs

March of Giants sets itself apart on paper with Giant commanders, controllable Soldier battalions, and deployable Battleworks. Here’s what that means—and what comparisons are still too early to make.

March of Giants is an upcoming free-to-play 4v4 tactical MOBA. Its announced difference from familiar lane-based games such as League of Legends and Dota 2 is that players control Giants who command battalions of Soldiers, while teams deploy structures and units called Battleworks to shape the battlefield. That gives it a distinct design premise; it does not yet prove that the game is faster, deeper, easier, or better balanced than its rivals.

What makes March of Giants different?

Ubisoft describes March of Giants as a lane-based tactical MOBA played by two teams of four. Players take the role of Giants: hero-like battlefield commanders who fight while directing groups of Soldiers. Ubisoft’s official overview outlines the format and systems in its March of Giants news and updates.

Players command more than a single hero

Soldiers are organized into battalions. Ubisoft says they can scout, gather resources, capture targets, attack fortifications, and engage opposing Giants. The developer’s design account presents them as a way to build pressure and contest objectives, rather than simply as background lane units. In concept, this places a commander-and-battalion layer alongside the hero combat common to team-based MOBAs.

Battleworks can change the battlefield

Teams can deploy Battleworks—structures or units such as trenches, tanks, turrets, and bunkers. Ubisoft says these affect combat and can reshape the battlefield. That creates an announced tactical axis beyond choosing when and where to fight: teams may also use deployables to influence the ground on which the fight happens. The precise strategic impact will depend on how these systems work in the playable build.

A gunpowder-fantasy setting

The world combines a First World War-inspired battlefield and industrial-era technology with fantasy Giants described as born from dreams and nightmares. Ubisoft has identified fans of gunpowder fantasy and steampunk among the intended audience. This is a tonal distinction, not evidence of a gameplay advantage.

How it compares with established MOBAs

Comparison point March of Giants League of Legends and Dota 2
Team format Announced as 4v4 lane-based tactical MOBA combat (Ubisoft). Ubisoft names these as established, dominant MOBAs, but the official sources cited here do not provide a directly comparable format table.
Player role Control a Giant who acts as a battlefield commander. Ubisoft cites the games as genre comparators; the reviewed official sources do not document their player-role mechanics for a head-to-head comparison.
Control of other units Command battalions of Soldiers with stated scouting, resource, capture, fortification-attack, and combat roles. Not established by the cited sources for this comparison.
Battlefield alteration Battleworks include announced examples such as trenches, tanks, turrets, and bunkers; Ubisoft says they can influence combat and reshape the battlefield. Not established by the cited sources for this comparison.
Setting First World War-inspired industrial warfare mixed with fantasy Giants. Not compared in the official sources cited here.

The useful distinction is therefore about announced mechanics: a Giant commander, controllable battalions, and deployable Battleworks. Ubisoft says it wants a different experience rather than to copy the position occupied by League of Legends and Dota 2. That is a stated design aim, not a measured comparison of match quality. The August 2025 developer account explains the team’s design rationale at Ubisoft’s March of Giants news and updates.

What is not yet established about the comparison?

The official material available for this article describes the concept and planned systems, but does not establish comparative match length, balance, strategic depth, onboarding difficulty, competitive viability, or player population. It would be premature to call March of Giants easier, faster, deeper, more accessible, or more competitive than other MOBAs based on the announced mechanics alone.

Ubisoft Montreal has acknowledged the challenge of entering a crowded genre. Product marketing manager Laure Guilbert said: “Our perspective is that, yes, MOBA is a difficult genre to break into. But there’s room for a different and innovative experience.” That quote describes Ubisoft’s ambition; whether players find the result meaningfully different is something actual play and later evidence will determine.

Development, playtest, and planned release

Ubisoft acquired March of Giants from Amazon in December 2025, along with the Montreal team that had been developing it as Amazon Games Montreal. Ubisoft’s acquisition announcement records the transition.

In a press release dated October 1, 2026, Ubisoft announced a Pioneer Playtest scheduled for October 7–18, 2026, for North America and selected European countries, with access through the Steam playtest page. The same announcement describes Early Access as planned for summer 2027. These are announced plans, not confirmation that the dates or availability remain unchanged; check the live Steam listing or Ubisoft’s official updates for current access details. Ubisoft Montreal’s feature gives a conflicting October 7–19 end date in one passage, so the dated October 1 release is the clearer schedule to cite.

How much can the earlier alpha tell you?

Ubisoft’s September 2025 Closed Alpha page listed 15 playable Giants, five Battleworks, one PvP map, the Breach mode, Custom Games, Bot Matches, and Tutorials. That alpha ran September 2–14, 2025, and Ubisoft said it represented only part of the planned content. Those details are a historical snapshot; they do not establish what was included in the October 2026 Pioneer Playtest or what will ship at release. The alpha page also listed PC requirements for that test, which should not be treated as current requirements; check the live Steam page for the build you intend to play.

Who should keep an eye on it?

March of Giants is most immediately notable to players curious about a MOBA built around commanding units as well as controlling a hero-like character, or about deployables that can alter the battlefield. Its setting may also appeal to players drawn to industrial-era fantasy. Those are reasons to watch or try the game—not evidence that it will suit every MOBA player. The strongest comparison will come once players can evaluate the systems in practice and the developers publish more about the live build.
