What “the Multiverse Saga” means for Marvel Zombies
Marvel’s saga label is a franchise-wide umbrella, not a complete chronology. In a September 10, 2022 article about its D23 announcements, Marvel described Phases 4, 5 and 6 as “aka, The Multiverse Saga.” That framing places projects dealing with alternate realities, branching outcomes and cross-universe possibilities within one broad era of MCU storytelling. That statement does not mean every multiverse story receives a formal phase number. A saga is a marketing and narrative grouping; a phase is a more specific release-and-story classification. Marvel’s official material about Marvel Zombies identifies its relationship to What If…? and describes its premise, but does not call it a Phase 4, Phase 5 or Phase 6 installment. The most accurate description is therefore “a What If…?-derived animated story within the Multiverse Saga,” rather than “a Phase 5 chapter,” for example.
Why the distinction matters
Readers often use “MCU timeline” to mean the sequence of events in the principal live-action continuity. Marvel Zombies is better understood as a branch reality. Its placement is defined by the world it explores, not by a slot between two live-action films. The Multiverse Saga supplies the larger context; What If…? supplies the direct narrative doorway.

Its direct connection to What If…?
Marvel describes What If…? as an animated series that reimagines events from MCU films and uses those altered outcomes to open multiverse possibilities. Its official series page explains that premise at Marvel’s What If…? page. Instead of asking what happened in the established MCU sequence, each story asks what might have happened if a key choice, character or event had changed.
The zombie branch began in Season 1
Marvel’s report from the 2022 Marvel Studios Animation panel says the Marvel Zombies project grew out of the zombie story in What If…? Season 1. That makes the earlier episode the series’ explicit point of origin. The animated series is not an unrelated horror remake that happens to use Marvel characters; it expands a reality that What If…? already introduced.
The panel report is available from Marvel’s SDCC 2022 animation-panel coverage. It also quotes executive producer Brad Winderbaum saying, “We are not shying away from the things that made the comic book great,” describing the project’s willingness to embrace horror. That comment helps explain the tonal shift from superhero adventure to survival horror without changing the project’s multiverse lineage.

What the connection does and does not establish
The connection establishes shared animated continuity with the Season 1 zombie scenario. It does not establish that every version of every character in the series comes from the main MCU reality, nor does it turn the zombie outbreak into a later event in the principal timeline. The branch is the point: the story develops consequences inside an altered reality.
What the series itself contributes
Disney+ describes Marvel Zombies as a 2025 series in which survivors confront a zombie plague after the Avengers are overtaken. The current listing is available at Disney+. That premise explains why the project can use familiar MCU heroes while still operating outside the normal heroic status quo: the defining event of this reality is the loss of the Avengers to the infection.
In a September 23, 2025 behind-the-scenes article, Disney says the “four-part event series expands the dystopian world first seen in Marvel Studios’ What If…?.” The same article identifies Bryan Andrews as director, writer and executive producer. Why the four-part format is significant
The four-part structure distinguishes Marvel Zombies from a single anthology episode. A What If…? episode establishes the branch; the event series has room to follow its survivors, escalating threats and consequences across multiple chapters. It remains animated and alternate-universe storytelling, but its format supports a more continuous horror narrative than a one-off hypothetical.
The 2025 date is a release designation
Disney+ labels the title as a 2025 series. That date tells you when the series was presented for release, not when its zombie outbreak occurs inside the fictional universe. No official source cited here supplies an in-universe calendar year, so attempts to place the outbreak in a precise year between MCU films go beyond what Marvel and Disney have stated.
Where it fits in an MCU timeline
The safest timeline answer is categorical rather than numerical: Marvel Zombies belongs to an alternate reality connected to What If…?, while the saga label places it in the Multiverse Saga’s broad franchise era. The official material does not provide a numbered phase assignment or an in-universe year.

How to watch it as a continuity story
If your goal is to understand the branch rather than assemble a complete MCU release order, use this sequence:
- Watch the zombie episode from What If…? Season 1. It introduces the alternate reality that Marvel later expanded.
- Note the branching premise. The episode is a reimagined outcome, not a hidden chapter of the ordinary MCU chronology.
- Watch the four-part Marvel Zombies event. Disney describes it as continuing that dystopian world with survivors facing the consequences of the Avengers’ infection.
- Keep the series in the alternate-reality track. You do not need to insert it between specific live-action films, because no official year or film-to-series placement has been supplied.
This order gives the series its intended context while avoiding a false precision that the official descriptions do not support.
Why it belongs in the Multiverse Saga even without a phase number
It turns alternate outcomes into ongoing worlds
The central function of the Multiverse Saga is to make divergent realities part of the MCU’s storytelling vocabulary. What If…? demonstrates that function in animated form by changing film events and exploring the consequences. Marvel Zombies takes one of those consequences and develops it into a sustained setting with its own survivors, threats and rules.

Animation is not a lesser continuity category
Marvel’s descriptions treat the project as an official Marvel Studios animation production, not as a non-canon parody. Its continuity is simply branch-based rather than mainline. That distinction lets the series use recognizable MCU elements while telling a story that could not occur without radically changing the established status quo.
Its horror tone is part of the adaptation strategy
The animation-panel comments about not avoiding the comic’s defining qualities indicate a deliberate horror approach. The zombie premise is therefore more than a visual makeover for familiar heroes. It is a test of how an alternate MCU reality behaves when the superhero system becomes the source of the catastrophe.
Marvel Zombies and the Earth-2149 comics designation
Marvel’s site has a separate reference page for Marvel Zombies (Earth-2149), available at Marvel’s Earth-2149 page. That page concerns the comics material and its Earth designation. It should not be used as proof that the animated series takes place on Earth-2149.
The animated project’s documented links are its What If…? Season 1 origin and Disney’s description of an expanded dystopian world. Those facts support a shared animated branch, but they do not supply a numbered Earth for the series. Similarities between the comic concept and the animated premise can explain the adaptation’s inspiration; they cannot substitute for an official designation.
Common timeline mistakes to avoid
- Assigning a phase without a source. The Multiverse Saga contains Phases 4, 5 and 6, but that umbrella does not automatically give every title a phase number.
- Using the 2025 listing as the story’s year. Disney+ identifies the series as a 2025 title, not as a zombie outbreak occurring in 2025.
- Placing the outbreak between live-action movies. The premise is an alternate reality descended from What If…?, so a conventional film-by-film slot is misleading.
- Equating the animated reality with Earth-2149. The Earth-2149 reference belongs to Marvel’s comics material and is not confirmation of the series’ universe number.
- Calling it a separate, unrelated zombie adaptation. Marvel and Disney explicitly connect it to the Season 1 What If…? zombie story.
A precise way to describe its place in the MCU
For a timeline guide, wiki entry or discussion, the most defensible wording is: “Marvel Zombies is a four-part animated series that expands the zombie reality introduced in What If…? Season 1. It is part of the Multiverse Saga’s broad alternate-reality storytelling, but Marvel has not assigned it a numbered phase, an official Earth number or a specific in-universe year.”
That formulation separates three facts that are often blended together: the saga-wide label, the direct What If…? continuity link and the information Marvel has not published. It gives the series a clear place in the MCU’s multiverse without inventing a chronology the official sources do not provide.
