1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, linked equipment slots let a compatible blue Support materia modify the materia placed in its connected slot. Pair Elemental with elemental magic to add elemental offense on a weapon or elemental defense on armor; pair Magnify with compatible magic to expand its targets, with reduced effect while expanded. The result depends on the pairing, the equipment location, and the Support materia’s level.
What linked materia slots do
Materia fits into slots on weapons and armor. Equipping it gives a character access to abilities such as magic and summons. Some slots are connected to another slot, and that connection matters when using Support materia: it is the link that lets a compatible Support materia alter or extend the effect of its partner.

Think of a linked pair as a relationship between two equipped materia, not as a bonus that applies to every materia on the character. The blue Support materia supplies an effect; the materia in the connected slot supplies the ability or element that effect works with. If a Support materia is equipped without a compatible partner in the linked slot, it does not produce that paired effect.
Compatibility depends on the particular Support materia. The fact that two materia fit into slots does not mean they form a working combination, and a connected pair does not make every blue materia compatible with every other type. Elemental and Magnify are useful examples because they show two different ways a Support materia can change what its partner does.

How to set up a linked pair
The Materia & Equipment menu is not available from the very start of the story. Square Enix says it becomes accessible after reaching certain points in the game’s progression, without specifying a single universal point in the material cited here.
- Open Materia & Equipment. Once the menu is available, select the character and the weapon or armor you want to configure.
- Look for a connected slot pair. Choose two equipment slots shown as linked. A pair of separate, unconnected slots will not provide the connection required for a Support effect.
- Put the Support materia in one slot and a compatible partner in the connected slot. Which partner works depends on the Support materia; do not assume the pairing is valid just because both materia can be equipped.
- Choose the equipment location for the result you want. This distinction is especially important for Elemental: a weapon uses the linked element offensively, while armor uses it defensively.
- Consider the Support materia’s level and the intended use. Elemental’s weapon and armor effects grow with its level, and Magnify’s power penalty for expanded targeting decreases as it levels. A pairing can therefore behave differently as the Support materia progresses.
These steps explain the setup principle rather than a universal menu-by-menu sequence for every platform or game state. The key check is that the two materia occupy connected slots and are a compatible pair.
Elemental: weapon offense or armor defense
Elemental links an elemental magic materia to a piece of equipment. The same linked element has a different purpose depending on where you equip that pair: on a weapon it is added to attacks; on armor it provides defense against that element. Square Enix’s system overview uses Lightning materia and Support Elemental to illustrate the combination, while its explanation distinguishes the weapon and armor outcomes.

|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Adds the linked element to attacks. | When you want the character’s attacks to carry the paired element. |
| Armor | Provides defense associated with the linked element. | When you want protection against the paired element. |
The magic materia determines which element is involved; the weapon-or-armor position determines whether the pairing is used for offense or defense. That means the useful question is not simply “Should I equip Elemental?” but “Which element do I want, and do I need it on offense or defense for this setup?” Against a particular enemy, the value of the choice depends on that enemy’s elemental matchup. The available sources establish the equipment effects, but do not support a specific enemy-by-enemy recommendation.
Elemental’s strength is level-sensitive. The GameFAQs Final Fantasy VII Remake materia guide describes increasing weapon damage and armor protection across its levels, including immunity and absorption at higher levels. Those upper-level outcomes should not be assumed for an under-leveled Elemental materia: check its current level and use the guide’s level-specific information if you need to know the exact effect available to your setup. No single damage or protection figure applies to every level.

Reading an Elemental setup correctly
There are three separate decisions in an Elemental build. First, select the elemental magic materia that supplies the element. Second, place the connected pair in a weapon or armor slot, depending on whether you want an offensive or defensive result. Third, check the Elemental level before expecting the strongest version of the effect. Changing any one of those variables can change what the character gains.
For example, a Lightning-and-Elemental pair in a weapon is not the same configuration as the same two materia in armor. The materia names have not changed, but the equipment role has. Likewise, moving a higher-level Elemental out and replacing it with a lower-level copy can reduce the result even when the linked slots and elemental spell are identical.
Magnify: wider spell coverage with a trade-off
Magnify links with compatible magic and expands that magic to multiple applicable targets. With healing magic, that can let a spell cover more than one party member; with attack magic, it can widen coverage across valid targets. It changes the spell’s reach, rather than acting as a universal damage increase.
The trade-off is reduced effect when the spell is expanded. The GameFAQs materia guide reports that this reduction becomes smaller as Magnify gains levels. If a spell’s impact matters more than its breadth in a particular situation, the expanded cast’s penalty is worth considering; if covering multiple targets is more useful, the broader reach may be the better choice. The source material does not establish a single exact target count or reduction value that applies regardless of spell, level, and situation.
- For healing: link Magnify with compatible healing magic when reaching several applicable allies is more important than the reduced effect of the expanded spell.
- For attack magic: link it with compatible attack magic when broader coverage is useful, while accounting for the reduction applied during expansion.
- For a focused effect: consider whether expanding the spell is worthwhile when you need its effect concentrated rather than spread across multiple targets.
These are use-case distinctions, not guarantees that any one spell or target will behave identically in every encounter. The materia pairing must be compatible, and the result depends on the spell’s applicable targets and Magnify’s level.
Rank #3
Why Magnify is not simply “more power”
Magnify changes who can be affected, not the basic identity of the linked spell. A healing spell remains a healing spell, and an attack spell remains an attack spell. The expanded cast trades some effect for broader reach. As Magnify levels, the guide-described reduction becomes smaller, so the same pairing can become more attractive later than it was when first obtained.
When deciding whether to use it, compare the number and type of valid targets with the size of the reduction. A party-wide recovery can be valuable even when each individual heal is reduced, while a single-target attack may be better left unexpanded when concentration matters. The correct choice is situational rather than a permanent ranking of one configuration over another.
How to choose between Elemental and Magnify
Elemental and Magnify solve different equipment questions, so they are not interchangeable options. Elemental connects an element to equipment, with its position deciding offense versus defense. Magnify changes the target coverage of compatible magic and reduces that magic’s effect while expanded.
| Decision | Elemental | Magnify |
|---|---|---|
| What is being changed? | The equipment’s relationship to the linked element: attack property on a weapon or defense on armor. | The target coverage of compatible linked magic. |
| What should you check first? | Which elemental magic materia is paired, whether the pair is on a weapon or armor, and Elemental’s level. | Which compatible spell is paired, which targets can be affected, and the effect reduction while expanded. |
| What is the main trade-off? | The usefulness depends on the chosen element, equipment location, and relevant matchup. | More target coverage comes with reduced effect while the magic is expanded. |
For a specific configuration, start with the outcome you need rather than the color of the materia. If the goal is to add an elemental property to attacks or protect a character, consider Elemental and select weapon or armor accordingly. If the goal is broader coverage from a compatible spell, consider Magnify and weigh coverage against its reduced expanded effect.
Common setup mistakes and what to check
- The two materia are equipped, but the Support effect is absent. Check whether the slots are actually connected and whether the specific Support materia is compatible with its partner. Fitting into equipment is not the same as forming a working linked combination.
- Elemental does not appear to have the expected result. Check whether the pair is on a weapon or armor: the former adds the element to attacks, while the latter provides elemental defense. Then check Elemental’s current level, since the strength of its effect changes with level.
- Magnify’s spell seems weaker when expanded. Reduced effect is part of its trade-off when it broadens a compatible spell’s targets. Its level affects the size of that penalty, so a result at one level should not be treated as a universal value.
- The menu is not available yet. The Materia & Equipment menu unlocks after story progression reaches certain points. If it is not accessible early in the game, continue progressing rather than assuming the linking mechanic is missing.
- A connected slot is mistaken for a universal bonus. The connection only creates the opportunity for a compatible Support pairing. It does not automatically improve every materia equipped on that weapon or armor.
- A result from one game is applied to another. This guide covers FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE. Do not assume that the same slot behavior, compatibility list, or level result automatically applies to the original Final Fantasy VII or Rebirth.
A quick pre-battle checklist
Before committing to a linked setup, confirm the equipment slot pair first, then identify the Support materia’s compatible partner. For Elemental, ask whether the desired outcome is elemental attack property or elemental defense, and verify that the pair is on the corresponding equipment type. For Magnify, identify the spell’s valid targets and decide whether wider coverage justifies reduced effect. Finally, inspect the Support materia’s level; both Elemental’s benefits and Magnify’s penalty are level-sensitive according to the Remake materia guide.

This checklist also helps when comparing two characters. A weapon-based Elemental pair and an armor-based Elemental pair may use the same elemental materia but serve opposite purposes. A Magnify pair on a healing spell prioritizes party coverage, while the same Support concept on attack magic prioritizes reaching more enemies. The connection itself is only the mechanism; the spell, equipment location, level, and encounter goal determine the practical value.
Square Enix’s official system explanation establishes the equipment-slot and Elemental principles. The more detailed level behavior, compatibility guidance, and Magnify explanation are described in the GameFAQs guides specifically for Final Fantasy VII Remake. Keep that scope in mind: this explanation is for Remake, not a claim that every materia rule is identical in the original Final Fantasy VII or Rebirth.

How do I link materia in Final Fantasy VII Remake?
Open the Materia & Equipment menu after it becomes available, choose equipment with two connected slots, and place a Support materia beside a compatible partner. Separate slots or an incompatible partner will not produce the Support effect.
What does Support materia do?
A compatible Support materia modifies or extends the effect of the materia in its linked slot. It is not a general bonus for every materia on the character, and compatibility varies by Support materia.

There is no universal pairing rule for every blue materia. Check the particular Support materia’s compatibility and make sure the partner occupies the connected slot. Elemental pairs with elemental magic, while Magnify pairs with compatible magic.

Does Elemental work on both weapons and armor?
Yes. Linked to a weapon, Elemental adds the paired element to attacks. Linked to armor, it provides defense associated with that element. Its strength also changes with Elemental’s level.
What does Magnify do?
Magnify expands compatible magic to multiple applicable targets. The expanded spell has reduced effect, although the GameFAQs Remake guide says that reduction decreases as Magnify levels.
Why is my linked materia doing nothing?
Check three things: the slots must be visibly connected, the Support materia must be compatible with its partner, and the partner must be in the linked slot. For Elemental and Magnify, also check the equipment location, spell type, and current level.

Does a higher materia level change linked effects?
Yes. The Remake materia guide describes stronger Elemental weapon and armor results at higher levels, including immunity and absorption at higher levels, and a smaller Magnify reduction as Magnify levels. Exact results depend on the level and pairing.
When do I unlock the Materia & Equipment menu?
It is not available at the very beginning. Square Enix states that the menu becomes accessible after certain story-progress points, so continue through the opening progression if it is not yet present.
The Bottom Line
Linked slots are the condition that allows a compatible Support materia to change its partner. Use Elemental on a weapon for elemental offense or armor for elemental defense; use Magnify with compatible magic when broader target coverage outweighs the reduced expanded effect. Always verify the connected slots, compatibility, equipment location, and Support materia level in FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE.
