Ms. Pac-Man began not as a planned sequel, but as Crazy Otto, a modification to Pac-Man made by General Computer Corporation (GCC). MIT students Doug Macrae and Kevin Curran founded the company; engineer Steve Golson and other collaborators helped develop the game. After Midway saw the project, the plan shifted from selling an enhancement to creating a sequel. Ms. Pac-Man arrived in early 1982.
How the MIT connection became a game business
Doug Macrae, Kevin Curran and Steve Golson met while studying at MIT. Macrae and Curran began operating pinball and video-game machines on campus, including in dormitories. That hands-on arcade business helped lead to GCC, which Macrae and Curran co-founded. Their work together would move from operating machines to making games and arcade enhancements. Fast Company’s 2017 oral history recounts the group’s MIT ties and early business.
Macrae later summed up the choice between academic work and the game in a line to Fast Company: “Rather than doing my thesis, I developed Ms. Pac-Man.”
Crazy Otto was the starting point, not the final title
GCC’s project began as Crazy Otto, a modification of Pac-Man with a different character and altered gameplay. It was not initially conceived as a finished, officially branded sequel. MIT Game Lab’s account of Steve Golson’s talk describes surviving source code and graphics ROMs that document the project’s evolution from Crazy Otto to Ms. Pac-Man.

Why it became a sequel
GCC’s modification attracted Midway, the North American distributor associated with Pac-Man. The project’s direction changed through that relationship: rather than selling Crazy Otto as an enhancement kit, the parties developed it as a sequel. The transformation was therefore not simply a rename. The team’s modification became a new arcade game, shaped with Midway’s involvement. The participants’ accounts appear in Fast Company’s oral history; the ACMI cabinet record also summarizes the modification’s presentation and evolution into Ms. Pac-Man.
What changed from Pac-Man
ACMI describes new mazes and less predictable ghosts as key changes that made Ms. Pac-Man more challenging. Its collection notes also record a character-design change: the original design’s hair was replaced by the recognizable bow. These are concrete differences in the game and its character, rather than evidence that a single person created the sequel alone. See ACMI’s Ms Pac-Man arcade cabinet entry.

Who created Ms. Pac-Man?
Macrae and Curran founded GCC, while Golson and other engineers contributed to development. Calling the game the work of “MIT dropouts” captures part of its origin, but can obscure the team effort: the founders’ campus arcade experience, GCC’s development work and Midway’s role in turning Crazy Otto into a sequel all mattered. MIT Game Lab identifies Golson’s MIT and GCC background, while the participants’ oral history provides additional detail about the collaborators.
