MLB’s current postseason format sends 12 clubs to the playoffs: six from each league, made up of three division champions and three Wild Cards. Division champions always occupy seeds 1–3, ahead of every Wild Card regardless of record. The top two division winners receive byes, and tied regular-season records are settled by mathematical tiebreakers rather than a winner-take-all Game 163.

The 2026 MLB playoff field

Each league—the American League and National League—qualifies six teams. Three win their divisions, while the next three best records earn Wild Card places. This creates a 12-team tournament, six clubs per league.

Postseason position How a team qualifies Seed range First postseason round
Division champion Finishes first in its division 1–3 Seeds 1 and 2 receive a bye; seed 3 plays in the Wild Card Series
Wild Card One of the three best remaining records in the league 4–6 All three begin in the Wild Card Series, with seed 4, 5 or 6 matched by bracket position

The standings determine qualification within each league. American League records are compared with American League records, and National League records with National League records; an American League club does not enter a cross-league tiebreaker with a National League club.

MLB’s official format explainer describes the current arrangement at MLB.com. Because the format is controlled by the league, a later season could change the field or procedures.

How playoff seeds are assigned

Division winners are seeds 1 through 3

The three division champions are ranked by regular-season record. The best division winner is seed 1, the second-best is seed 2, and the third-best is seed 3. A division champion’s status takes priority over a Wild Card club’s record.

Wild Cards are seeds 4 through 6

After the division winners are identified, the three remaining qualifiers are ranked by record as seeds 4, 5 and 6. A Wild Card team can have a better record than one or more division winners and still be placed below all three champions. The seed order is not a league-wide ranking of every team; it is first a ranking of division winners, followed by a ranking of Wild Cards.

The Wild Card Series bracket

The Wild Card Series is a best-of-three round played entirely at the higher seed’s ballpark. Seed 3 hosts seed 6, while seed 4 hosts seed 5. The higher seed hosts all games, so there is no travel split or alternating home-field arrangement in this round.

What happens after the Wild Card Series

There is no reseeding after the opening round. The winner of the 4-versus-5 series advances to face seed 1 in the Division Series. The winner of the 3-versus-6 series faces seed 2. The Division Series is best of five. The League Championship Series and World Series are each best of seven.

For the League Championship Series, the higher seed has home-field advantage under MLB’s current explanation. In the World Series, home-field advantage goes to the club with the better regular-season record, regardless of its seed number or whether it won its league as a division champion or Wild Card.

Why a Wild Card with a better record can be a lower seed

Consider a hypothetical league in which one division champion finishes 88–74 and a Wild Card finishes 94–68. The 94-win club does not become seed 1 or seed 2. The division champion remains in the 1–3 group, and the Wild Card remains in the 4–6 group. The Wild Card’s superior record can make it the highest Wild Card, but it cannot displace a division winner in the overall seed order.

This distinction affects the bracket and byes. A division champion ranked third receives a Wild Card Series home series, while the two division winners above it skip that round. A Wild Card never receives a bye under the current six-team-per-league format.

MLB no longer uses Game 163

Since the postseason expanded from 10 teams to 12 in 2022, MLB has not scheduled a separate tiebreaker game to settle a tie for a division, Wild Card qualification or affected seeding. The league’s September 8, 2026 explainer states: “With the 2022 expansion of the postseason field from 10 teams to 12 teams, tiebreaker games will no longer be used to resolve ties in the standings at the conclusion of the regular season.”

Instead, tied clubs are separated through regular-season results. That means a tie is resolved on paper after the final scheduled game, using the applicable sequence below. A club does not gain an extra game, and a tie is not carried into the postseason as an unresolved matchup.

Older articles may describe Game 163 or multi-game tiebreaker schedules. Those descriptions belong to previous rules and should not be used to interpret the current bracket. The current MLB rules are collected in MLB’s tiebreaker explainer.

Two-team tiebreaker: the complete order

When exactly two clubs are tied, MLB moves through the following criteria in order. The first criterion that separates them decides the relevant qualification or seed position.

  1. Head-to-head record. Compare the clubs’ regular-season games against one another. The team with the better record in those games advances in the standings.
  2. Intradivision record. If head-to-head results do not separate the clubs, compare each team’s record within its own division. MLB applies this step even when the tied Wild Card contenders come from different divisions.
  3. Intraleague record. Compare each club’s record against teams in its league. For an American League tie, use American League games; for a National League tie, use National League games.
  4. Second-half intraleague record. Compare the clubs’ records in intraleague games after the All-Star break. MLB cautions that this is not necessarily the exact halfway point of every team’s schedule, so it should not be interpreted as an automatically equal number of games for every club.
  5. Backward game-by-game sequence. If the tie remains, start with the last game of the first half of intraleague games and then work backward through earlier intraleague games one at a time. The additional game used at each step cannot be a game between the two tied clubs.

The sequence is used for ties affecting a division title, a Wild Card berth or the ordering of seeds. It is not a separate playoff contest; it is a comparison of games already played.

Three-team ties require a separate branch

Do not automatically apply the two-team list to a three-club tie. MLB first asks whether one team has a better record against each of the other two tied clubs. If one club has that clean advantage, it takes the relevant position.

If no club defeated both opponents on that basis, MLB ranks the teams by their overall winning percentage in games against the other tied clubs. A tie within that mini-standings table is then resolved with the appropriate two-team rules. In other words, the three clubs are first reduced to an order or a smaller tied group before the next comparison is chosen.

When all three clubs have identical mini-records

If the three teams are completely tied in their games against one another, MLB uses a three-club sequence: intradivision winning percentage, intraleague winning percentage, intraleague winning percentage in the latter part of the season, and then the backward game-by-game method. The later-season measure is the same concept MLB describes as the post-All-Star-break intraleague record; it is not assumed to be the precise midpoint of the schedule.

Three clubs tied for a division and a Wild Card place

When the tie involves a division championship and one Wild Card position, MLB first determines which club wins the division. The two remaining clubs then use the two-team procedure to decide the Wild Card berth. This prevents a single three-team comparison from mixing the division title and Wild Card decisions in the wrong order.

Four-team ties and multiple available places

For four clubs tied for one position, MLB begins by checking whether one club has a better record against each of the other three. If that does not settle the tie, the league compares the clubs in this order:

  • Winning percentage among the tied clubs.
  • Intradivision winning percentage.
  • Intraleague winning percentage.
  • Intraleague winning percentage in the latter part of the season.
  • The backward game-by-game intraleague sequence, excluding games between the tied clubs when the rule requires an additional game.

If one of these comparisons leaves two clubs tied, MLB applies the two-team rules. If it leaves three clubs tied, MLB applies the three-team branch. The process can therefore move from a four-team comparison to a smaller comparison rather than forcing one universal formula onto every tie.

MLB also uses these principles when the number of tied clubs and the number of available postseason places match. In that case, the clubs may all qualify, but the same comparisons determine their exact seeding. Qualification and seed order are separate questions: a tie can determine who gets a bye, who hosts a Wild Card Series and which Division Series path each club enters.

How to work through a real standings tie

First identify what is being decided

Write down whether the tie concerns a division title, the last Wild Card berth, the order of Wild Cards, or the ranking of division winners. The target matters because a division title is resolved before Wild Card ordering when the same clubs are involved.

Count the tied clubs

Use the two-team sequence only for a two-club tie. For three or four clubs, begin with the corresponding multi-team procedure. Do not skip directly to head-to-head between two selected teams while a third or fourth club remains part of the unresolved group.

Use only the relevant league and schedule segments

For intraleague calculations, exclude games against the other league. For the later-season calculation, use post-All-Star-break intraleague games as MLB defines them, not an assumed calendar midpoint. When the process reaches the backward sequence, follow the games in reverse order and omit a game between the tied clubs where MLB’s rule calls for an outside opponent.

Translate the result into the bracket

Once the tie is settled, place division winners in seeds 1–3 by record and Wild Cards in seeds 4–6 by record. Then apply the fixed pairings: 3 versus 6 and 4 versus 5, with seed 1 awaiting the 4/5 winner and seed 2 awaiting the 3/6 winner. A tiebreaker result can therefore change a bye, hosting rights, or an opponent even when every tied club already qualifies.

Common misconceptions

  • “The best six records make the seeds.” No. Three division champions are placed first, then three Wild Cards.
  • “A Wild Card with a better record gets a bye.” No. The byes go to the top two division winners.
  • “The Wild Card Series is a single elimination game.” No. It is a best-of-three series hosted entirely by the higher seed.
  • “MLB schedules Game 163 when two clubs finish tied.” No. Current ties are resolved mathematically after the regular season.
  • “Every tie starts with the same head-to-head checklist.” No. Three-team and four-team ties have their own opening tests and may later fall back to two-team rules.
  • “The World Series always belongs to the higher seed.” No. Current MLB guidance awards World Series home-field advantage to the participant with the better regular-season record.
