Nokia’s Snake made a simple game part of the everyday feature-phone experience; app stores later changed how players found and installed games; and today, in-app purchases and ongoing engagement are central to a market measured in tens of billions of dollars. The milestones below trace that shift without treating it as a complete history of every platform or region.
Before app stores, a game could come with the phone
Snake is a useful starting point because it was built into the experience of using a phone, rather than being something a player had to seek out in a storefront. Microsoft’s historical account traces Snake’s lineage to earlier arcade and computer games, then describes its arrival on Nokia phones in 1997. The Nokia 6110 stands out as a feature-phone milestone: a familiar, straightforward game was available on a device people carried every day. Snake was not the first mobile game, but it is a well-documented example of how gaming became part of mainstream phone use.
Microsoft’s 2009 retrospective credits Nokia design engineer Taneli Armanto with programming Snake for a Nokia device. It estimates that original versions of Snake were distributed on 350 million devices. That is Microsoft’s estimate, not an independently verified device count.
App stores changed how players found games
Apple says it launched the App Store on July 10, 2008, with 500 apps. The milestone helped make a dedicated storefront a visible, organized route to mobile software: players could browse and download games instead of relying only on what came with a handset. It marked a major shift in distribution, but not the beginning of all downloadable phone games or software distribution.

In its 2018 tenth-anniversary retrospective, Apple wrote: “When Apple introduced the App Store on July 10, 2008 with 500 apps, it ignited a cultural, social and economic phenomenon that changed how people work, play, meet, travel and so much more.” That is Apple’s own characterization of its platform’s impact; the more limited historical point is that the store established a prominent new way for players to discover and obtain apps.
Today, spending and downloads can move in different directions
Mobile gaming is now a large business, but market growth is not simply a matter of ever more downloads. Sensor Tower’s 2025 report release estimates that mobile-game in-app purchase revenue reached $82 billion in 2024, up 4% year over year. It estimates 49 billion mobile-game downloads that year, down 7%, while game sessions rose 12%.

These figures describe different measures: in-app purchase revenue, downloads, and sessions. Taken together, they suggest that recent market growth can depend on monetizing and retaining players who are already engaged, alongside bringing in new players. They do not mean every game uses the same model or that higher session counts necessarily produce higher spending. The revenue figure is Sensor Tower’s estimate for in-app purchases, not a measure of all mobile-game revenue.
