MTG Arena wildcards are single-use crafting cards: each one redeems for a card of the same rarity. Arena has common, uncommon, rare and mythic rare wildcards. Spend one when it completes a deck or format plan you actually intend to play, after checking the card’s current in-client cost, the number of copies you still need and its legality in your chosen format. There is no official rule that saving every wildcard or spending immediately is always correct.
What is a wildcard in MTG Arena?
Wizards of the Coast defines a wildcard as “a card that can be redeemed for another card of the same rarity.” In practical terms, a rare wildcard can craft a rare card, a mythic rare wildcard can craft a mythic rare card, and so on. Wildcards are not a general currency that can be converted between rarities, and a rare wildcard cannot be used to obtain a mythic rare card.

The wildcard symbols in the Arena client show how many of each rarity you have. A card’s rarity determines which symbol is consumed when you confirm the craft. Because reprints can change the effective rarity, use the cost shown by the client rather than relying only on the rarity of the artwork or printing you are viewing.

Booster packs and collection rewards
Wildcards appear in booster-pack rewards. Wizards also describes wildcard progress from playing and collecting cards, including the Vault. The exact odds, track contents and reward rules can change, so use the current Reward Distribution & Drop Rates page and the reward screens in your client for present-day details. Do not assume that every extra card in every pack becomes a wildcard: pack types have different reward and duplicate rules.
The Vault
The Vault is a hidden progress system. Wizards states that a fifth or later copy of a common contributes one Vault Progress Point and a fifth or later copy of an uncommon contributes three points. The Vault opens at 1,000 points and awards one mythic rare wildcard, two rare wildcards and three uncommon wildcards. It remains hidden until it has filled, so you may not see a visible percentage while duplicates are accumulating. These figures are listed on the official reward page linked above.
Those duplicate inputs do not directly give you common or mythic cards. Common and uncommon fifth copies feed Vault progress; the listed Vault payout is the six-wildcard bundle shown above. The number of duplicate points you receive depends on the card’s type and whether it is already a useful copy in your collection.
Why pack type matters
Store packs, Golden Packs and packs opened through Limited events are not interchangeable for duplicate protection. Wizards’ Wilds of Eldraine release notes described rare and mythic reprint protection under that release’s policy and explicitly excluded 14-card Draft and Sealed packs. A later reprint update changed some behavior, so treat the release notes as historical context and verify the live rules before opening packs for a particular collection goal.
A September 5, 2023 Golden Pack and Individual Card Rewards update described a replacement order for a rare or mythic duplicate in a Golden Pack: first an eligible card of the same rarity from the same set, then an eligible Standard-legal set, then an eligible standalone Alchemy set, and finally gems. That announcement listed 20 gems for a rare and 40 gems for a mythic after eligible cards were exhausted. Those values and the launch-era contents are dated rules, not a promise that every future Golden Pack uses the same contents; check the current client and live reward documentation.

How do you use wildcards?
Craft a card from your collection
- Open the collection and select the card you want.
- If you do not own it, turn on the Not Collected filter so unowned cards appear.
- Inspect the craft prompt. It shows the rarity of wildcard required and the number of copies you would receive.
- Confirm only after checking the deck, format and copy count. The appropriate wildcard is removed immediately when you accept.
The collection view is useful when you know the exact card but have not yet attached it to a deck. The wildcard icon at the top of the client lets you check your remaining balances before confirming.
Craft a missing card while editing a deck
- Open the deck editor and add the card you want, or select a missing card already shown in the list.
- Choose the option to craft the missing card when Arena offers it.
- Review the displayed rarity and quantity, then accept the prompt.
This path is safer for deck building because the editor shows how many copies the list calls for and how many you already own.

When you import a deck with several cards you do not own, Arena can offer Craft All. Review the complete cost before accepting. The client’s collection-aware logic is intended to avoid creating more copies than are useful across the same-name cards and printings, but you should still inspect the list for cards you do not plan to play. Crafting all is a convenience, not a reason to spend every wildcard in your account.
Why the rarity shown on a reprint can be misleading
Arena’s reprint system treats cards with the same name as one craftable card for wildcard purposes. Wizards explains that the card uses the lowest wildcard rarity at which that name has appeared on Arena. A card that has a common Arena printing can therefore be craftable with common wildcards even if the special artwork or another printing is displayed at a higher rarity.
The same system tracks your collection across printings and helps Craft All account for copies you already own. Wizards documents the implementation in MTG Arena Reprint and Card Style Improvements and Dev Diary: Improving Reprints on MTG Arena.

No published player study establishes a universally optimal spending date, and Wizards does not prescribe a “save all rares” or “spend immediately” rule. Use this decision sequence instead. It separates a card you need now from a card you merely might want later.
1. Name the deck or play goal
Start with a concrete use: a deck you are ready to build, a sideboard plan for a format you play, or a limited set of cards needed to test a strategy. A wildcard spent because a card looks powerful is harder to justify than one that completes a deck you will queue with this week. Arena supports crafting a specific unowned card, so you do not need to spend in anticipation of an undefined future list.
2. Check the actual craft cost
Look at the client’s prompt, especially for a reprint, alternate art or special-frame version. Confirm whether the card costs common, uncommon, rare or mythic rare wildcards and note how many copies are selected. If the displayed cost differs from what you expected, use the displayed value; the same-name reprint rules can make the lowest Arena rarity decisive.
3. Count the copies you still need
Compare the deck’s requested quantity with copies already in your collection. Include copies under other Arena printings because the collection and craft logic can treat same-name cards together. Crafting four copies when the list needs two ties up wildcards without improving that deck. If you are experimenting, craft the minimum number that lets you test the deck rather than completing a theoretical playset.

4. Confirm the format and its expected life
Rotation changes the eligible card pools for rotating formats such as Standard and Alchemy. Cards that rotate out can remain legal in nonrotating Arena formats including Historic, Pioneer and Timeless, subject to each format’s rules. A 2025 rotation announcement cannot establish whether a named card is legal in October 2026, and legality can change through bans or format updates. Select the intended format in the current client and verify the card before spending; the official historical overview is Renewal for MTG Arena’s 2025 Standard Rotation.
If a rare is central to a Standard deck that you expect to play for only a short time, waiting has a higher opportunity cost than it would for a staple you also use in a nonrotating format. That is a planning consideration, not a prediction that any specific card will remain legal.
5. Compare crafting now with the pack path
Ask whether the packs or rewards you would open are likely to advance the same collection goal. A relevant set’s packs may add cards you need, progress a wildcard track or contribute to duplicate protection; an unrelated pack may do none of those things. Golden Packs and Limited packs follow different rules, so “I will just open packs” is not a single alternative.
| Choice | What you get immediately | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Craft now | The exact card and number of copies selected in the client | Wildcard rarity, copy count, format legality and whether you will actually play the deck |
| Wait for ordinary packs | A chance at cards and wildcard progress from that pack’s reward system | Current odds, set relevance and duplicate-protection rules |
| Open Golden Packs | The current Golden Pack reward structure | Live contents and replacement rules; the 20-gem rare/40-gem mythic figures belong to the September 5, 2023 update |
| Play Limited | Limited rewards and 14-card event packs under their own rules | That Limited packs do not necessarily use the same rare/mythic duplicate protection as other packs |
Choose the path that serves your stated deck goal. There is no documented guaranteed return that makes waiting automatically better.
Examples of the decision in practice
You need one rare to play tonight
You have three copies, the deck list needs four, the client shows a rare wildcard cost, and the card is legal in the format selected. Crafting one is a direct completion of a current plan. Recheck the quantity before confirming; crafting a fourth copy is different from crafting four copies.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. - Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. You are missing eight cards from an untested list
Do not press Craft All solely because the button is available. Sort the missing cards by rarity, identify the cards that define the strategy, and test whether the list works with cards already in your collection. Craft the minimum set needed for a meaningful test, then add further copies only if the deck earns a place in your regular queue.
The card has a premium reprint
Ignore the premium frame’s apparent rarity until you open the craft prompt. If Arena recognizes a lower-rarity same-name printing, the prompt can require that lower-rarity wildcard. If you own copies under another printing, the collection-aware count may also reduce the number you need.
The card is near rotation
First decide whether you will use it in a nonrotating format. If not, compare the remaining time you expect to play the rotating deck with the value of keeping the wildcard for a longer-lived card. The client’s current legality result is the authority for the card you are about to craft.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming wildcards are interchangeable: they are locked to the card’s rarity. Check the symbol before confirming.
- Reading rarity from artwork: reprint rules can make the craft cost lower than the displayed special printing suggests. Use the prompt.
- Crafting a full playset by habit: count the copies already owned and the copies the deck actually needs.
- Ignoring format legality: rotation, bans and format-specific rules change what you can play. Verify in the current format selector.
- Treating all packs as equivalent: ordinary, Golden and Limited packs have different reward and duplicate behavior.
- Expecting fifth copies to become a random wildcard immediately: fifth-or-later common and uncommon copies feed Vault points, and the Vault pays its published bundle only at 1,000 points.
- Following a universal saving rule: the official material provides system mechanics, not evidence that one timing strategy wins for every player.
A concise pre-craft checklist
- What deck or play goal does this card serve?
- Which format will you play, and is the card legal there right now?
- What rarity and quantity does the client’s craft prompt show?
- How many same-name copies do you already own across printings?
- Would opening a relevant pack or reward advance this exact collection goal?
- Will spending this wildcard leave enough flexibility for the next deck you genuinely intend to play?
If you can answer those questions, you have enough information to make a deliberate craft. The strongest use of a wildcard is not the card with the highest theoretical power; it is the card that solves a specific, legal deck need at a cost you have checked in the current client.
