How Much Bandwidth Does a 24/7 YouTube Live Store Promo Loop Use?

A continuous YouTube Live feed uses about 10.8 decimal GB per day per Mbps. See example totals for 480p30, 1080p30 and 1080p60, plus how to measure your store’s actual upload.

Plan on about 10.8 decimal GB per day for every 1 Mbps of continuously transmitted bitrate, or about 324 GB per 30-day month per Mbps. At YouTube’s H.264 recommendation of 10 Mbps for 1080p30, a nonstop feed works out to about 108 GB per day and 3.24 TB per 30 days. These are estimates of the store’s upload to YouTube—not the data viewers use to watch.

Estimate the store’s upload from its bitrate

Use the bitrate your encoder actually sends. For a continuous feed:

  • GB per day (decimal) ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 10.8
  • GB per 30 days ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 324

The calculation is bitrate × seconds ÷ 8, converted to decimal bytes. For example, 10 Mbps × 10.8 equals 108 GB per day. Multiply by 30 for a 30-day month: 3,240 GB, or 3.24 TB in decimal units.

These are arithmetic estimates, not measured totals. They assume the stream transmits at the stated average bitrate for 24 hours every day. Audio, transport overhead, bitrate fluctuations and reconnects can add to actual use; the available guidance does not quantify those additions for a particular setup. A router or ISP meter is the better way to estimate a specific installation’s billable total. If the meter reports binary GiB or TiB rather than decimal GB or TB, its displayed number will differ slightly.

Example estimates for YouTube H.264 settings

YouTube’s H.264 live-encoder recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026, include 4 Mbps for 480p30, 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. Applying the formula gives these planning values:

Encoder setting Recommended video bitrate Approx. per day, 24 hours Approx. per 30 days
480p30 4 Mbps 43.2 GB 1.296 TB
1080p30 10 Mbps 108 GB 3.24 TB
1080p60 12 Mbps 129.6 GB 3.888 TB

These are calculations from YouTube’s recommended video bitrates, not totals published by YouTube or measurements of a store’s traffic. The cited guidance gives separate recommendations by codec and includes minimum as well as recommended values; use the current row for the codec and output settings configured in your encoder. The recommendations can change.

What changes the monthly total

Bitrate and stream settings

Bitrate is the main driver of source-upload volume, and the estimate scales linearly: doubling the bitrate doubles the calculated data use. Choose the row that matches the encoder’s actual resolution, frame rate and codec rather than estimating from the video file’s size.

Codec

YouTube’s HLS guidance says HEVC generally provides 25% to 50% more compression than H.264 at the same video quality. That is general guidance, not a guaranteed reduction for a particular promo loop. Use the bitrate actually configured for your codec when calculating data.

Hours streaming and backup feeds

The figures assume 24 hours of active ingest every day. Downtime reduces usage. Sending a redundant second feed to a backup ingest address can increase outbound traffic because it is an additional feed; YouTube’s API documentation describes a primary and optional backup ingestion address.

Broadcaster upload versus viewer playback

The estimate covers the store sending its feed into YouTube. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into different output formats for viewers, so audience downloads are a separate traffic measure that depends on viewing. Do not multiply the store’s upload estimate by the number of viewers.

Plan and verify a store installation

  1. Choose the output settings. Select the resolution and frame rate that look appropriate on the store display, then note the encoder’s configured bitrate and codec.
  2. Calculate a first estimate. Multiply Mbps by 10.8 for approximate decimal GB per full day, or by 324 for approximate decimal GB per 30 days. Adjust for the hours you expect to be live.
  3. Test the actual setup. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and monitoring stream health while live. For a fixed promo loop, use the planned encoder settings and compare the estimate with the router or ISP data meter over a representative period.
  4. Account for shared internet use. Other devices on the store connection also use data and upload capacity. A bitrate calculation alone cannot establish whether a particular connection will remain stable unattended; test it under the store’s real conditions.
  5. Include any redundant feed. If the setup sends a backup feed, account for its additional outbound traffic rather than treating the primary estimate as the whole total.

YouTube’s live-stream guidance also notes that the quality selected should suit a reliable internet connection and recommends monitoring stream health. It does not establish a universal upload-speed headroom multiplier for every store connection.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a prerecorded promo loop, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live by looping videos uploaded to its cloud service. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. Your computer and home or store connection do not have to stay on to keep the loop running.
