How to Match OBS Frame Rate to Prerecorded Videos for YouTube Live

Match OBS’s output frame rate to the prerecorded video when practical, then test resolution, bitrate, motion, and stream health before going live.

For a YouTube Live stream built around a prerecorded video, set OBS’s output frame rate to the video’s actual frame rate when practical. In OBS, open Settings > Video > Common FPS Value. Matching is a sensible way to preserve the source’s cadence—not a special YouTube Live requirement. YouTube’s separate upload guidance recommends keeping the rate at which content was recorded, while its live guidance permits up to 60 fps.

What FPS should OBS use for a prerecorded video?

Check the file’s actual frame rate in its media information or editing/export workflow, then use that rate as your starting point. Common rates include 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps. YouTube’s advice to keep the recorded rate is specifically for uploaded content; applying it to an OBS media source during a live stream is a practical inference, not an explicit live-stream rule. YouTube’s upload encoding guidance makes that distinction important.

Do not infer frame rate from resolution, and do not raise a 24, 25, or 30 fps source to 60 simply because YouTube supports 60 fps. A higher output rate does not create motion detail that is absent from the source.

Set the frame rate in OBS

  1. Check the source. Find the prerecorded file’s frame rate using its media information or the editing/export workflow that produced it.
  2. Open OBS’s video settings. Go to Settings > Video, then choose the source rate under Common FPS Value, if that exact value is available. OBS says this setting should match the desired output FPS. See the OBS Studio overview.
  3. Choose resolution separately. Keep the output resolution appropriate for the video and broadcast. OBS distinguishes Base (Canvas) Resolution from Output (Scaled) Resolution; changing either resolution is not the same as changing FPS.
  4. Test the actual program. Run a private, unlisted, or otherwise safe test using the same clip, audio, transitions, and motion expected in the event. Check for judder, dropped frames, audio-sync problems, and YouTube stream-health warnings.
  5. Adjust only if the test calls for it. If 60 fps is unstable, try 30 fps. For a playlist with mixed frame rates, choose the rate that best serves the dominant or most important material, then test transitions between clips; official guidance does not establish one universally correct setting for mixed-rate playlists.

OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide recommends trying 30 fps when 60 fps does not work. Fewer frames can reduce rendering and encoding work, but converting a 60 fps source to 30 fps changes its cadence. Test representative motion before settling on the lower rate.

Should OBS be 30 or 60 fps for YouTube Live?

YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps. That is a ceiling, not a recommendation to use 60 fps for every stream. Make the choice based on the source’s cadence, the motion viewers should see, OBS stability on the computer, and the upload capacity available for the selected resolution and codec.

Output choice When it fits Trade-off
Match the source rate The source rate is available in OBS and the system handles it reliably. Preserves the source cadence without choosing a higher output rate without a reason.
30 fps 60 fps causes instability, or the material is primarily 30 fps or lower. Can ease rendering and encoding load, but reduces cadence from a 60 fps source.
60 fps The source’s motion benefits from it and the computer and upload connection sustain the stream. Can be more demanding; the bitrate recommendation also differs from 30 fps.

YouTube recommends testing before an event with similar movement and audio, then monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast. Its live encoder settings page lists the following ingest bitrate examples. Values are YouTube recommendations shown on the page accessed October 3, 2026—not guarantees of picture quality or a substitute for checking available upload capacity and live stream health. Resolution and rate Codec Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p30 H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p30 AV1 or H.265 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p60 AV1 or H.265 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

Keyframes, bitrate mode, and codecs

Frame rate is only one part of the live output configuration. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency, not more than 4 seconds, and CBR bitrate encoding for RTMP/RTMPS. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among supported video codecs, and says YouTube automatically detects encoder settings and transcodes the stream for viewers. Check the live encoder settings page for the current recommendations that apply to your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec.

Common problems and what to check

  • The picture judders. Confirm the OBS output rate and source rate. A mismatch may change cadence; test the intended output rate with a section containing representative motion.
  • OBS cannot keep up at 60 fps. Try 30 fps as OBS recommends, then test again. Lowering FPS may ease system work, but it changes the cadence of 60 fps material.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health. Check the selected resolution, FPS, codec, and bitrate against YouTube’s current recommendations; verify that the upload connection can sustain the bitrate and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages.
  • Audio and video do not stay in sync. Test with the same audio and media source planned for the event, and check for sync issues during the full test rather than only at the start.
  • A playlist switches between different rates. Test the actual transitions and choose an output rate based on the material viewers will see most. There is no universal official OBS setting established for mixed-rate playlists.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping on YouTube Live, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to leaving OBS and a computer running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos in the cloud; it does not go live from a camera.
